About the CompanyAs a System Engineer (Senior Army Engineer) within the Maintenance and Engineering Support Command (MES), you will lead teams of Army Engineers and soldiers to ensure that the Army’s platforms — from tracked systems such as the Leopard 2SG and Hunter AFV, to combat wheeled platforms like TERREX and BELREX, and sophisticated systems such as Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) and HIMARS — remain operationally ready, reliable, and sustainable throughout their life cycles.About the RoleYou will integrate leadership, systems engineering, and innovation to maintain the Army’s technological edge. This role uniquely combines technical mastery with command leadership — offering mid-career professionals the opportunity to shape both technology and people development in national defence.ResponsibilitiesSystems Integration & Life-Cycle Engineering Oversee the engineering stewardship and maintenance governance of all Army platforms — ensuring technical assurance, safety certification, and reliability throughout the system’s life cycle.Manage the integration of subsystems (propulsion, communications, sensors, weapon systems, and control software) across tracked and wheeled platforms.Lead mid-life upgrades, obsolescence management, and platform modernisation projects to extend operational lifespan and enhance system reliability.Apply systems-engineering principles to ensure interoperability, performance optimisation, and maintainability across the fleet.Engineering Leadership & Technical Authority Serve as the technical authority and trusted advisor for assigned fleets, responsible for diagnosing system failures, analysing data, and driving defect resolution strategies.Lead technical investigations, risk assessments, and engineering assurance processes to sustain readiness and reliability.Partner with the Defence Technology Community (DTC), DSTA, DSO, and industry partners to develop and implement engineering solutions and technology insertion plans.Champion reliability modelling, predictive analytics, and condition-based maintenance to enhance sustainment effectiveness.Innovation, Technology & Capability Development Drive innovation in maintenance and sustainment, integrating technologies such as Advanced Manufacturing, AI-driven diagnostics, Unmanned Systems, and Power & Energy solutions to enhance readiness.Develop digital engineering solutions for fleet monitoring, predictive failure analysis, and life-cycle management.Identify opportunities to leverage new technologies for reducing maintenance downtime and enhancing platform performance.Collaborate with research and industry partners to trial and adopt cutting-edge technologies aligned to the Army’s long-term sustainment roadmap.Command, Leadership & People Development As a commissioned officer, lead, command, and mentor teams of engineers and soldiers in both peacetime and operational environments.Command maintenance or support detachments during exercises, operations, or overseas deployments to deliver real-time engineering solutions.Develop and train junior officers and engineers through the Army Engineer Professional Pathway (AEPP), fostering professional growth and technical accreditation (e.g., Chartered Engineer, Technologist, or Technician).Instil values-based leadership, teamwork, and professionalism in engineering operations and sustainment culture.Operational Readiness & Sustainment Management Plan, coordinate, and oversee maintenance and recovery operations to ensure platforms are mission-ready at all times.Develop sustainment strategies that integrate supply chain planning, spares forecasting (MTBF), and obsolescence management.Oversee engineering support during exercises and deployments, ensuring operational reliability and responsiveness under all conditions.Lead forward maintenance teams, employing field-deployable solutions such as mobile workshops, recovery vehicles, and additive manufacturing capabilities. QualificationsRecognised degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Systems, or related Engineering disciplines.Proven experience (5–10+ years) in systems engineering, lifecycle management, reliability analysis, or maintenance engineering.Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset with the ability to integrate technology, people, and processes.Leadership capability with experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and projects.Strong communication and stakeholder management skills across operational and technical domains. Required SkillsExperience in defence, aerospace, or automotive engineering industries.Familiarity with predictive maintenance systems, advanced diagnostics, and system reliability analytics.Professional accreditation (e.g., Chartered Engineer) or postgraduate qualifications in Systems or Engineering Management.
