Our products are used across multiple sectors, including aerospace, defence, automotive, healthcare, and energy.About the RoleThis role is based within the Magnesium R&D Department at our Swinton site, where we design, develop, and support the manufacture of novel magnesium alloys, magnesium powders, and PTFE powders for a range of sectors.The primary focus of this position is to lead the technical support for powder products and manufacturing, providing customer support while managing continuous improvement and product development projects. Around 25% of your time will also be spent supporting activities in the wider magnesium alloys business.This is a varied and hands-on role that requires both technical leadership and practical problem-solving. You will work closely with other technical leads, operations, and commercial teams to ensure that R&D and production activities align with business objectives.The role involves regular travel (approximately six working weeks per year), primarily to the USA, with occasional visits to other locations.Key ResponsibilitiesLead technical development activities within the magnesium powders businessAct as a technical advisor, providing customer support and guidanceManage and contribute to product development and continuous improvement projectsParticipate in the review of internal and external specificationsSupport new supplier qualification and cost-saving initiativesCollaborate with other technical leads to ensure the effective running of the R&D departmentRepresent Luxfer in technical discussions with customers and suppliersProactively develop new ideas, product concepts, and potential improvementsQualifications & ExperienceDegree-level qualification in a physical science (Chemistry, Materials Science, or Engineering)Experience of leading and managing research and development projectsProven background in metallurgy, with knowledge of metal processing technologiesPractical experience with light alloys and understanding of metal powder manufacturingStrong grasp of scientific methodology and experimental planningSkills & KnowledgeExcellent scientific reasoning and analytical skillsAbility to design experiments and present clear, rational technical argumentsCompetence in independently carrying out research to solve problemsStrong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectivelyStrong communication skills, with confidence in presenting findings to technical and non-technical audiencesWhat We OfferCompetitive salary up to £45,000 (based on experience)Annual performance bonus opportunityCompany share scheme (after probation)25 days’ annual leave plus public holidaysEnhanced pension schemeFree on-site parkingOpportunities for professional growth and development within a global businessApply now to join a forward-thinking R&D team and help shape the future of magnesium materials at Luxfer MEL Technologies.Please note: We reserve the right to close this advert at any time once the position has been filled.
