Job Description

Job ResponsibilitiesPerforms inspection duties in areas such as pavement markings, guardrail, cable rail, encroachment permits, and surveying. Ensures all work complies with applicable contracts, plans, standards, and specifications. Performs asphalt inspection duties and ensures all work complies with applicable contracts, plans, standards, and specifications. Performs concrete inspection duties and ensures all work complies with applicable contracts, plans, standards, and specifications. Performs erosion control and earthwork inspection duties and ensures all work complies with applicable contracts, plans, standards, and specifications. Monitors work zones on assigned projects as a certified Work Zone Inspector to ensure traffic control devices are installed and maintained in accordance with SCDOT and MUTCD standards. Notifies the contractor promptly of any traffic control deficiencies or safety issues and ensures they are corrected immediately. Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly construction and office reports, forms, and logs. Coordinates with utility companies to ensure timely relocation of utilities on assigned projects. Ensures minimum sampling and testing requirements are met and that all required documentation is submitted in accordance with Department specifications. Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum And Additional RequirementsA high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience.Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise. Normal forty (40) hour work week with intermittent overtime, night time, and weekend hours during peak construction seasons, hazardous weather or emergencies as required. Must be capable of traversing rough terrain, standing for long periods of time, lifting heavy objects, bending, stooping, and climbing. Must have the ability to work In all types of weather and to work around heavy traffic.A motor vehicle operator’s license is required.Additional CommentsApplications accepted on-line at careers.sc.gov.
