In Larnaca, Cyprus, a multi-storey building housing the Tax Department was evacuated after gas emissions were detected in the basement. The incident occurred on November 27; emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

According to Fire Service spokesperson Mr. Kettis, a chemical incident response team carried out the evacuation as a precaution and inspected all premises using breathing apparatus. Preliminary information indicates that the emissions originated from the building’s toilets and sewage system.

As a result of the incident, one employee felt unwell; an ambulance arrived on site and provided the necessary assistance. The Fire Service noted that the smell is no longer present, but employees have not yet returned to the building due to the ongoing investigation into the causes.

The departmental statement said that the actions are being carried out in cooperation with all competent services, and the exact causes of the emissions are being investigated. Officials urged people to remain calm and stated that there is no cause for concern.
