Bangladesh tightens security amid shutdown ahead of verdict in case against Sheikh Hasina

Dhaka [Bangladesh], November 16 (ANI): Bangladesh has tightened security ahead of a shutdown as the Bangladesh International Crime Tribunal (ICT) prepares to deliver a verdict in a case filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The case relates to alleged crimes against humanity during the student-led protests in July-August 2024. Sheikh Hasina has denied all allegations against her.The situation in Bangladesh has become tense ahead of the verdict. Sheikh Hasina's Bangladesh Awami League has announced a two-day shutdown across the country, starting Sunday morning, disrupting normal life. Traffic in the capital, Dhaka, has been relatively light, while firecracker explosions have been reported in some areas.Business leaders have expressed concern over the political situation, hoping that the upcoming general elections will help restore stability in the country.Quazi Moniruzzaman, former President of the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said, "I think it is not a very comfortable situation. We are very scared about the situation. We hope there will be free and fair elections, people will cast their votes peacefully, and an elected government can resolve all problems--business, social issues, law and order--which are currently in very bad shape.""As a freedom fighter who fought for the country in 1971, I feel very sorry for all the inconvenience caused to the people of Bangladesh. Last year was very difficult. We hope the 2026 elections will give new hope to the people of Bangladesh. We also aim to maintain good relations with all neighbouring countries while protecting our sovereignty. Above all, we must come together for a peaceful situation in the region," he added.Moniruzzaman also stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with neighbouring India, saying, "India helped us in 1971, and as a freedom fighter, I received training there. We need to maintain strong ties with India while respecting our sovereignty. As a big neighbour, India will respect our sentiments, and we hope to have good relations in the future."Commenting on the garment industry, Moniruzzaman said, "We are proud of the garment industry. It has been running for a long time, but the current situation is unstable. Any unrest will hurt the industry, and overseas buyers may lose confidence. This sector earns most of Bangladesh's foreign currency and employs many, especially women. If the industry is not protected, it could lead to social unrest and economic problems."Regarding minorities, he said, "As human beings, I do not believe in minority or majority distinctions. We are all Bangladeshi people, and there should be no discrimination based on religion."Since the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has banned the activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, party leaders have been announcing programmes through social media from undisclosed locations while actively campaigning online. In July 2024, a student-led uprising toppled Sheikh Hasina's government. On August 5, 2024, she fled to India, and an interim government was formed under Muhammad Yunus. According to a United Nations report, around 1,400 people may have died during the July protests.Sheikh Hasina's administration had initially established the International Crimes Tribunal to prosecute crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan. The tribunal previously tried several Jamaat-e-Islami leaders accused of war crimes during Hasina's tenure. (ANI)

MAGA Rift Widens as Trump, Greene Clash

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida: When President Donald Trump addressed Congress earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was there holding an American flag and wearing a red baseball cap that said “Trump was right about everything.” After the speech, he gave her a kiss and she beamed. Trump was back in power and Greene was positioned to be one of his most ardent political foot soldiers with Republicans controlling all levers of power in Washington. Their alliance didn't last the year. Now it has fractured in an explosive feud that could foreshadow more rifts within Trump's “Make America Great Again” movement before next year's midterm elections. In recent weeks, Greene has escalated her criticism of Trump's focus on foreign policy over what she has said should be an agenda that concentrates on Americans, as well as his reluctance to release more documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case. On Friday, the Republican president said he would support a primary challenge against the Georgia congresswoman. “All I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!” Trump wrote on his social media platform as his motorcade whisked him from Air Force One to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. On Saturday, Trump tested out a new nickname for her, calling her “Marjorie Taylor Brown” because “Green grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!” Trump has successfully stamped out other challenges to his power over the years, but Greene is not backing down. She even suggested that she, not Trump, may be the true champion of the “America First” agenda. “I believe in the American people more than I believe in any leader or political party and the American people deserve so much better than how they have been treated by both sides of the aisle,” she wrote in her own post Saturday. She also said she is worried about her safety because “threats against me are being fueled and egged on by the most powerful man in the world.” Trump backed Greene from the start Greene is not the first lawmaker to earn Trump's anger. Their split, however, is the most notable of his second term. She has been closely tied to him since 2020, when she began her political career in Georgia's rural northwest. Backing the QAnon conspiracy theory, appearing with white supremacists and brandishing assault rifles, Greene was opposed by party leaders but supported by Trump. He called her a “future Republican Star” and “a real WINNER!” Jason Shepherd, a former Republican official in Georgia who left the party over disagreements with Trump supporters, said 2020 was “a perfect storm of political bizarreness” during upheaval caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Georgia was one of the closely contested states where Trump disputed his loss to Democrat Joe Biden, even pressuring Georgia's secretary of state to “find” enough votes to overturn the results. Shepherd, a lawyer and political science professor who lives in Greene's district, said “we never know what position Marjorie Taylor Greene is going to pop up with next." “I don’t know if she has any core convictions, except for what will help her the most,” he said. Greene started her congressional tenure as Trump was leaving the White House, and she supported the election lies that fueled the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. She became a media fixture as a target of liberal scorn and a promoter of Trump-style conservatism, and was a loyal lieutenant in his comeback campaign in 2024. But tension seemed to begin earlier this year when Greene was exploring a potential 2026 campaign against Jon Ossoff, one of Georgia's two Democratic senators. Trump said he sent Greene a poll showing that she “didn't have a chance." She ultimately passed on the race and later declined to run for Georgia governor while attacking a political “good ole boy” system that she accused of endangering Republican control of the state. A new Greene? Greene has recently set a different, more conciliatory tone. She went on ABC's “The View,” a daytime talk show considered a safe space for Democrats, to say “that people with powerful voices,” especially women, “need to pave a new path.” The rhetoric sparked speculation that Greene might be considering a run for president herself, which was later denied by her boyfriend, Brian Glenn, a conservative reporter known for his friendly questioning of Trump. Greene also has been criticizing Trump, particularly his work with other countries. She told Tucker Carlson last month that the administration's support for Argentina was “a punch in the gut" at a time when Americans are angry about prices for everyday...

Rohini Acharya Says She was Thrown out by Yadav Family

New Delhi: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter Rohini Acharya on Sunday alleged that she was humiliated, abused and threatened by her own family members. She sparked a political storm with explosive posts on social media, describing the pain of being ostracised, made to feel worthless, and burdened by emotional trauma. In an emotional post on X, Rohini claimed she was “humiliated,” “abused,” and even faced a threat of being hit with a slipper. She described herself as a devoted daughter, sister, wife and mother who refused to compromise on her dignity. But her stand, she said, led to brutal backlash — verbal abuse, physical threats and eventually being forced out of her parental home. “Yesterday, a daughter, a sister, a married woman, a mother was humiliated, abuses were hurled, shoes were raised to kill her… I didn’t compromise on my self-respect, didn’t give up on truth… just because of this, I had to face insults,” she wrote. She added that she left her parents’ home in tears, calling herself “orphaned”. There has been no immediate response from the RJD or members of the Yadav family regarding the allegations. The accusations come at a time when political developments in Bihar are under intense public scrutiny after the ruling NDA secured 202 seats — a three-fourths majority in the 243-member assembly. Hours after announcing she would “quit politics” and “disown” her family, Rohini claimed on Saturday that Tejashwi Yadav and his close aide, RJD MP Sanjay Yadav, had “thrown” her out of the family. Rohini alleged she was “disgraced, abused and even hit” when she questioned Sanjay Yadav about the party’s poor performance in the Bihar elections. “I have no family… They are the ones who threw me out of the family,” she told reporters, naming Tejashwi Yadav, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez. She accused the party leadership of refusing to take responsibility for the electoral defeat, saying that speaking against close aides resulted in her being targeted. The RJD performed poorly in the Bihar polls, winning only 25 seats despite contesting more than 140. Earlier on Saturday, Rohini announced she would quit politics and cut ties with her family, taking the blame for the party’s performance. Her announcement has widened existing cracks within the Lalu Yadav family. Her brother Tej Pratap Yadav had earlier been expelled from both the party and the family after a controversy involving his personal life. The developments have raised serious questions about the future of the Lalu family’s political dynasty and the internal dynamics within the RJD.

India need record chase to beat South Africa in Kolkata Test

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], November 16 (ANI): Team India have a massive task at hand in the ongoing India vs South Africa Test at the Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata. Shubman Gill & co. have been set a target of 124 runs by the Proteas on a pitch that is offering variable bounce to the bowlers and is tough for batting. Notably, the highest successful run chase in Tests in Kolkata is 117 runs, which India pulled off against the same opposition back in 2004.After 117, the next-highest successful chase at the venue is 79, achieved by India against England in 1993, underscoring how difficult batting becomes in the fourth innings at Eden Gardens. If India manages to chase South Africa's target of 124, it will set a new record for the highest successful run-chase at the venue. Coming to the Kolkata Test, the match saw 30 wickets fall across the two and a half days. India bowled out South Africa for 159 after being asked to field first. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler for the hosts, recording his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests. Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj supported him well, picking up two wickets each as the Proteas folded shortly after Tea on Day 1.India, however, found batting just as hard and were dismissed for 189. KL Rahul top-scored with a gritty 39 on a difficult surface while Rishabh Pant helped with a quick 27 off just 24 balls. Ravindra Jadeja's 27-run innings also helped India as they gained a 30-run lead. For South Africa, spinner Simon Harmer shone with a four-wicket haul, while Marco Jansen claimed three wickets.Trailing by 30 runs, South Africa managed 153 in their second innings, setting India a target of 124. While most of the visiting batters struggled against Jadeja's spin, captain Temba Bavuma batted with resistance with a determined 55, the only fifty of the match up to Lunch on Day 3. Corbin Bosch also contributed with an important 25 to keep South Africa's scoreboard moving. Jadeja claimed figures of 4-50 in 20 overs while Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj bagged two wickets each, with Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah claiming one apiece.Chasing 124, India were jolted early as Jansen removed both openers--Rahul and Jaiswal--reducing the hosts to 10 for 2 by Lunch on Day 3. "This is a family matter...": Mrityunjay Tiwari on Rohini Acharya's decision to quit politics and disown her family

Patna (Bihar) [India], November 16 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari on Sunday said that RJD leader Rohini Acharya's decision to quit politics and disown her family is a family matter.Tiwari added that the party's top leadership will review the situation and respond later.Speaking to ANI in Patna, Mrityunjay Tiwari said, "This is a family matter. Members of the family will speak on this. The party's top leadership will see this matter. The election results have come out just now. But why did such results come, and what were the reasons, is something that will be reviewed. Only after that can we give a response. Everyone knows that Rohini ji set an example; everyone would want a daughter and sister like her..."His remarks came after Tejashwi's sister alleged that she was "disgraced, abused, and even hit" when she raised questions regarding the party's defeat in the recent Bihar Assembly elections. She sparked a firestorm with her explosive social media posts explaining the pain of being ostracised, of being made to feel worthless, the burden she carries. In an emotional post on X, Rohini claimed that she was "humiliated," "abused," and even faced the threat of being hit with a slipper. Rohini, a devoted daughter, sister, wife, and mother, stood up for her rights and dignity. Her family and community expected her to compromise, but she refused to betray her values. The backlash was brutal - verbal abuse, physical threats, and ultimately, expulsion from her parental home."Yesterday, a daughter, a sister, a married woman, a mother was humiliated, abuses were hurled, shoes were raised to kill her... I didn't compromise on my self-respect, didn't give up on truth... just because of this, I had to face insults. Yesterday, a daughter left her crying parents and siblings due to helplessness... she was forced to leave her parental home... she was made an orphan... I pray that none of you ever have to walk my path, and no house should have a daughter-sister like Rohini," she wrote. However, there has been no immediate response from the RJD or members of the Yadav family regarding Rohini's allegations. The comments come at a time when political developments in Bihar are drawing heightened public attention, as the ruling NDA got 202 seats, a three-fourths majority in the 243-member House. ‘Apologise or face legal action’: Governor's ultimatum after Kalyan Banerjee's 'weapons in Raj Bhavan' charge

Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee's allegation that the Raj Bhavan was distributing weapons to the 'BJP criminals' in the state has drawn a sharp reaction from Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, who said the MP should either apologise or face legal action. Emphasising the serious implications of such allegations, Bose stated that Banerjee's remarks undermine the credibility of the Kolkata Police, which is responsible for guarding the premises. 'There are serious implications of these allegations. When a ruling party MP says that arms and ammunition are available inside the Raj Bhavan, is he expressing his lack of confidence in the police force of the state? Does it show any kind of inner party politics?,' he asked while talking to ANI news agency. Bose cautioned that any claim of arms smuggling in Raj Bhavan would mean that the Kolkata Police had connived with the act. 'He (Banerjee) has to make amends; he has the option to apologise to the people of Bengal, or there are legal options that can be taken against him,' Bose said. The governor said he would open the Raj Bhavan to the public for scrutiny and transparency. 'From 5 am onwards today, people, civil society members, and media are coming in to see whether there are any arms and ammunition in the Raj Bhavan,' he said. Earlier, talking to the media in the morning, Bose said he would meet the reporters again in the evening to explain how he is going to handle the issue. 'I will make up my mind on the matter and will come back to you this evening,' the Governor said. Meanwhile, a Raj Bhavan insider told IANS that the office of the Governor was mulling all possible legal actions, including approaching the Lok Sabha Secretariat for action against Banerjee. The TMC MP had launched a scathing attack on Bose on Saturday after the latter's remarks on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision, saying the Raj Bhavan was being used to shelter 'BJP criminals'. 'He (Bose) is keeping criminals there, giving them guns and bombs, and telling them to attack Trinamool workers. Let him stop this first,' Banerjee had alleged. The MP further called Bose an 'incompetent governor', saying nothing good will happen in West Bengal as long as he remains in the post.

Chirag Paswan's LJP-RV would have went solo in Bihar if not for THIS BJP's leader: Report

Chirag Paswan's negotiation skills were hailed by most after his Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) was allotted 29 seats by the NDA during the seat-sharing talks for the Bihar Assembly Polls 2025. BIHAR RESULTS DATA | Bihar assembly election results 2025: Winners and losers from all LJP (Ram Vilas) seats as Chirag Paswan improves NDA foothold LJP (RV) getting close to thirty seats while other smaller NDA allies including Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha and Jitan Ram Manjhi's Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) being limited to single-digit seats was analysed from multiple angles by Bihar's political experts. While some claimed it showed how much the BJP leadership respects and trusts the 43-year-old leader and his growing influence in the state, some others pointed out that the NDA was not willing to take any chance of him walking out of the alliance again. Yet some others said that the Union Minister of Food Processing Industries is being groomed by the BJP as their next key ally in the state for the post-Nitish Kumar era. LJP did not disappoint its alliance partners at all and won 19 seats — only six less than the state's main opposition party RJD. The strong performance had placed his party in a position to seek a Deputy Chief Minister's post, some political analysts say. Whether Nitish Kumar agrees to such an arrangement remains uncertain, though LJP (RV) MLAs are likely to secure ministerial berths. ALSO READ | Bihar assembly election results: The rise and rise of Chirag Paswan, and LJP (Ram Vilas) Amidst all the theories, Chirag Paswan has finally spoken about the seat-sharing talks and what went behind the curtains. He hailed Union Minister Nityanand Rai for the seat distribution talks progressing smoothly without hitting any major roadblocks. Paswan went to the extent of crediting the Minister of State for Home Affairs for the successful distribution of seats. 'As soon as he arrived, he got the entire negotiation finalised,' Jansatta quoted him as saying. Chirag further said that all Rai needed to ensure the campaign was moving forward smoothly was one or two meetings. Who is really behind the ‘Gen Z protests’ in Mexico City? Demonstrations leave 120 injured, 40 arrested

Thousands of people marched through Mexico City to protest against Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on Saturday. The protests left at least 120 people, mostly police officers, injured. The demonstrations were reportedly organised by members of Generation Z, but were later supported by older members who support the opposition in the country, the Guardian reported. About 17,000 people were reported to have attended the protests. Many of the protesters held banners and shouted chants saluting Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodriguez, the mayor of Uruapan in Michoacan state, who was assassinated on November 1, at a Day of the Dead event, after leading a movement against drug trafficking. Protesters tore down fences around the National Palace, prompting a clash with the police who deployed tear gas, media reports said. Mexico City's public safety secretary, Pablo Vazquez, said that at least 100 police officers were injured and 40 of them required hospital treatment. 20 civilians were also injured. Media reports also say that protesters were met with stones and beatings from the police. Elderly people were reportedly gassed with irritants. Who organised the protests? The protest was organised by a group called 'Generation Z Mexico'. In a manifesto that spread online, the group claimed to be non-partisan and said that they represent Mexican youth who are fed up with violence, corruption, and abuse of power. The protesters started at the Angel of Independence and marched towards Zocalo and ended their route at the National Palace. They were later joined by farmers and producers who demanded fair prices. The situation turned violent in Zocalo when hooded figures tore down metal barriers at the national palace, triggering a clash with the police. About 800 police officers were deployed. Why did they protest? One of the key demands of the group was justice for the murder of Carlos Manzo. Many protesters wore white clothing and carried hats that were attributed to the mayor. Many targeted the ruling party, chanting 'Out Morena,' and others blamed the government's inaction for Manzo's death, chanting 'Carlos did not die, the government killed him.' Protesters were also seen carrying One Piece flags, a symbol that has become synonymous with Gen Z demonstrations and movements. Others protested against the injustice in the system and called for justice in an arson case at the ABC Daycare centre. Shortage of medicines, growing insecurity, and a lack of responses to disappearances were other demands. Is the protest really a 'Gen Z protest'? Many media reports say that the demonstrators belonged to all age groups and did not just consist of Gen Z members. The protesters primarily expressed their discontent with the current government. Some Gen Z influencers even said on social media that they no longer supported the protests. However, mainstream figures like the former president Vicente Fox and Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego, published messages in support of the demonstrations. Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has accused right-wing parties of trying to infiltrate the Gen Z movement and using bots on social media to try to increase engagement. Days before the protest took place, she said, 'It is a movement promoted from abroad against the government.' An Al Jazeera reporter in Mexico City said that they had a 'hard time believing that this is an organic protest.' 'There are not a lot of young people out there on the streets, and we are thinking that may be a reflection or a sign that this is not really coming from the young people. Because we've seen protests here in Mexico City against the genocide in Palestine, for example, and we've seen young people by the thousands marching in the streets.' The Mexican president, Claudia Shienbaum, assumed office in October 2024, and she has maintained her approval rating at about 70 per cent for her first year in office. However, she has recently been faced with criticism due to several high-profile murders like Manzo's. Responding to the protests, Shienbaum said at an event, 'There was a demonstration in Mexico City, where they say young people marched, but in reality, there were very few young people, and they violently removed some barriers and broke windows. We say no to violence.' She then added, 'If one does not agree, one must demonstrate peacefully. We should never use violence to bring about change.' The 'Gen Z protests', driven by the demographic born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, are one of several around the world this year. Similar protests against the government took place in Nepal, which eventually led to the resignation of the country's prime minister.

Netanyahu on the attack against Shas MK: 'A wild handful of protesters'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the attack on MK Yoav Ben Tzur from Shas on Saturday night by ultra-Orthodox draft protesters in Jerusalem. He claimed it was a "violent assault by a small, unruly group of protesters." This after Ben-Tzur was assaulted by Haredi protesters for his part in advancing a bill to regulate the conscription for yeshiva students. According to Netanyahu, "Even when there are disagreements, there is absolutely no place for violence. Law enforcement authorities must act with a firm hand against any attempt to intimidate or harm public officials." Opposition leader Yair Lapid also issued a statement condemning the attack on MK Yoav Ben Tzur, saying, "This is not the way of the Torah, this is not the way of the State of Israel. These violent offenders must be dealt with severely." Yisrael Party Chairman, former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, said, "The attack on MK Ben Tzur is a grave manifestation of the loss of governance and the loss of shame among lawbreakers who are encouraged by leaders. This is an incident that requires immediate action and the arrest of all draft-dodging thugs. The phenomenon of separatism from the State of Israel demands deep and systemic treatment — first and foremost in education, conscription, and citizens' obligations. It must not continue." Yisrael Beiteinu chairman, MK Avigdor Lieberman, said, "The attack by dozens of Haredim on MK Ben Tzur from Shas is another example of why we must immediately level the playing field. All citizens of the state are subject to one, uniform, and singular legal system. Zero tolerance for lawbreakers — from draft dodgers and refusers to crime and protection rackets. Very soon — we will bring order here!" Dozens of ultra-Orthodox anti-draft activists blocked the car of Knesset member Yoav Ben-Tzur (Shas) in Jerusalem last night, after he visited a synagogue in the Bucharim neighborhood. Some of them jumped on the car and caused damage; cardboard boxes and garbage bags were thrown at the vehicle in protest against the draft law. A Border Police force was dispatched to rescue him. The Shas movement responded by stating that it "strongly condemns the serious attack on the vehicle of MK Yoav Ben Tzur, which was carried out this evening in Jerusalem by a handful of rioters. Acts of violence of this kind, which cause a desecration of God's name, are not the way of the Torah and do not represent any God-fearing community."

Afghanistan expands trade through Iran, Central Asia amid Pakistan tensions

ANIAfghanistan expands trade through Iran, Central Asia amid Pakistan tensions Afghanistan has increased its trade volume via Iran and Central Asian countries as part of efforts to reduce reliance on Pakistan after the diplomatic ties between the two nations deteriorated following the intense border clashes last month, Tolo News reported.According to Tolo News, citing Afghanistan's Ministry of Industry and Commerce, it stated that the country is using the Chabahar Port in Iran to bypass frequent disruptions at Pakistan's borders and ease political pressures from Islamabad, shifting transit agreements to alternative routes. An official spokesperson from the Afghan trade ministry also stated that Afghanistan's trade with Iran reached USD 1.626 billion over the past six months, compared to USD 1.108 billion in trade with Pakistan during the same period.Akhundzada Abdul Salam Jawad, ministry spokesperson, emphasised that diversifying trade corridors is key to maintaining stable import and export flows, as reported by Tolo News. The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) highlighted that reducing transportation costs from Iran and Central Asian countries could significantly boost Afghanistan's regional and global trade.Live EventsJan Agha Nawid, ACCI spokesperson, urged the government to sign long-term agreements with neighbouring countries, adopt preferential tariffs, and lower transit costs to expand trade opportunities."We urge the government to sign long-term agreements with neighbouring countries to create more trade opportunities for Afghans. Preferential tariffs and reduced transportation and transit costs can help pave the way for broader trade relations," the ACCI spokesperson said, as quoted by Tolo News.Following over a month of commercial crossing closures with Pakistan, Afghanistan's Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul GhBaradar, recently stressed the urgency of implementing alternative trade routes to ensure the uninterrupted movement of goods, as reported by Tolo News. The ties between the two Islamic nations have seen a decline in recent times due to the border issue, particularly on the matter of the Durand Line, the border drawn by the British in the 19th century, which still remains a topic of dispute.Earlier in October, the two sides were also in the middle of an intense clash along the border region, with Pakistan conducting airstrikes in the Afghan territory, with the Afghan government retaliating by targeting Pakistani checkposts along the border.A ceasefire was later agreed between the two sides following a round of talks between the two nations, with Qatar and Turkiye as the mediators. However, the last round of talks held earlier this month in Istanbul had seen a deadlock as both sides accused one another of putting forward "illogical" demands. Yashasvi Jaiswal's woes vs South Africa continue, falls for duck in second innings at Eden Gardens

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], November 16 (ANI): India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal's batting struggles against South Africa continued in Tests as he fell for a duck in the second innings of the ongoing India vs South Africa Test at the Eden Gardens. The left-handed batter lasted only four deliveries before falling to Proteas pacer Marco Jansen in the opening over of the innings. Earlier in the Test, during India's first batting innings, Jaiswal's wicket was scalped by Jansen. The Indian opener had faced 27 deliveries and scored only 12 runs before becoming the first wicket to fall on the day. With India coming in to bat to chase the target of 124 in the fourth innings on Day 3, Jaiswal came to the crease with KL Rahul on the other end. The Proteas captain, Temba Bavum, handed the ball to Jansen for the opening over. While the first three balls posed little threat, Jaiswal was beaten on all of them, trying to play a shot. However, Jansen pitched the fourth ball of the over on a good length in the corridor, got it to nip back slightly and Jaiswal, stuck on the crease, could only feather an outside edge through to the keeper, giving South Africa an early wicket.During India's first inning, Jaiswal chopped a shorter delivery from Jansen onto his leg stump, trying to play a cut shot. He entered the match with four previous innings against the Rainbow Nation, having been dismissed cheaply on every occasion. Before the ongoing Test, Jaiswal's previous outings against South Africa read 17, 5, 0 and 28 -- with the first two scores coming in Centurion in 2023 and the next two in Cape Town. Overall, the left-hander has scored only 62 runs in six Test innings against South Africa, with an average of just 10.33. Notably, five of his six dismissals against South Africa have come against left-arm pacers -- three to Nandre Burger and two to Marco Jansen.Coming to the Kolkata Test, India bowled out South Africa for 159 after being asked to field first. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer, registering his 16th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj supported him well, picking up two wickets each as the Proteas folded shortly after Tea on Day 1.India, however, found batting equally challenging and were dismissed for 189. KL Rahul top-scored with a gritty 39 on a difficult surface. For South Africa, spinner Simon Harmer shone with a four-wicket haul, while Marco Jansen claimed three.Trailing by 30 runs, South Africa managed 153 in their second innings, setting India a target of 124. While most of the visiting batters struggled against Ravindra Jadeja, captain Temba Bavuma batted with resistance with a determined 55, the only fifty of the match up to Lunch on Day 3. Corbin Bosch also contributed with an important 25 to keep South Africa's scoreboard moving.Chasing 124, India suffered early setbacks as Jansen dismissed both openers--Rahul and Jaiswal--leaving the hosts at 10 for 2 at Lunch on Day 3. Heavy rainfall alert for Tamil Nadu; next 24 hours crucial, IMD says

Heavy showers have been forecast on Sunday for Tamil Nadu this week as a new low-pressure area develops in the southern part of the Bay of Bengal, off the western coast of Sri Lanka. As a result, the next 24 hours are expected to be extremely crucial for the state, as the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for moderate to heavy rainfall in areas like Villupuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal. The rains will offer relief from the heat spell in the state over the past few days. Kanyakumari's Thirparappu area received the highest rainfall of 61.2mm over the past 24 hours, as of Sunday morning, the RMC said. Local forecasters echoed the same, reposting videos of heavy rain in delta areas of the state, such as Srivanchiyam. Heavy rain has also been forecast in isolated spots over the Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Villuppuram districts, as well as Puducherry. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast cloudy skies today, with thunderstorms likely to occur in one or two places. The IMD added that though the new low-pressure area was nearly stationary in the early hours of Sunday, cyclonic upper-air circulation in the area is expected to move the low-pressure area in a west-northwestard (WNW) direction over the next 24 hours. This leads to rain intensifying in the state. In that regard, as much as 200 cubic feet per second of excess water is being released from the Cholavaram Lake into the Kosasthalaiyar river, as a precautionary measure, an Indian Express Tamil report said. Disaster relief teams have been rushed to a number of districts in anticipation of possible waterlogging—Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Karaikal, which face the possibility of moderate to heavy rain today. They have also been dispatched to ten districts in Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Thoothukudi, where a warning of heavy to very heavy rain has been issued for Monday.
