Wax Diana in ‘r - 6FA - evenge dress’ is unveiled in Paris decades after her death in the city

Princess Diana returned to Paris in wax Thursday as one of Europe’s oldest wax museums unveiled a new figure of the British royal in the so-called “revenge dress,” decades after her tragic death in the city. The statue was ordered in Paris after the director of the Grevin Museum visited London and came away underwhelmed by the Diana likeness at Madame Tussauds, prompting him to commission his own version, museum officials said. Grevin’s life-size — and very convincing — figure of the late Princess of Wales is dressed in a replica of the black, off-the-shoulder, figure-hugging cocktail dress Diana wore to a Serpentine Gallery event in London in 1994. It was the same night that King Charles III — at the time Prince Charles — acknowledged on television that he had been unfaithful with Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla. For Paris, the tribute carried extra weight: Diana — “Lady Di” to the French, who still use the nickname affectionately even though she spent most of her public life as a princess — died after a car crash in a tunnel by the Seine in 1997, a death that helped immortalize her in the Parisian imagination, where she still remains present in the flowers and handwritten notes left at informal memorials. Museum officials noted that the unveiling came on the 30th anniversary of an ex plosive interview that Diana gave to BBC “Panorama,” which observers say dented the standing of the monarchy and the Queen. Some observers noted wryly how the museum’s newest royal guest was positioned far from wax likenesses of her famous ex-husband and mother-in-law. High heels, a pearl choker at her neck and a small handbag clasped in both hands completed the sculpture. Tabloids later dubbed the outfit the “revenge dress,” and the museum leaned into that symbolism. French novelist Christine Orban, who wrote “Mademoiselle Spencer,” a novel imagined from Diana’s point of view, said the figure was overdue. She called the black dress a turning point in Diana’s story. “The dress is very significant of her liberation because in the royal family, black is only worn for funerals, and then such a sexy dress for a Princess of Wales, well, that’s not common either,” she said. “So she decides to wear her high heels and Louboutins. And to go to the Serpentine Gallery to make an impression, to get photographed.” Grevin, founded in the 19th century, has long packed its ornate halls with political leaders, artists, pop-culture figures — and, yes, British royals. Diana is the latest in a steady stream of star wattage additions the museum uses to refresh the collection and boost visitors at the site that has attracted some 700,000 annual visitors in recent years. News of the unveiling filtered through Paris, even before most people had a chance to visit. “It brought back that night in the tunnel, even though I was a kid then,” said Julien Martin, 38. “Paris never completely let go of Diana, so it made sense that a big wax museum finally did this.” “I wasn’t even alive but for my generation, she seems like the first modern princess — glamorous, but also vulnerable,” said 24-year-old student Lina Ben Amar. “If tourists come to see celebrities in wax, she is one of the first they will look for.” Diana will be in good company. Curators set her beside another prominent royal who died in Paris — albeit centuries earlier. Source: AP

‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’ murder: Alleged shooter & other suspects further remanded

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the further remand of a group of suspects, including the alleged shooter, arrested in connection with the murder of underworld figure Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, alias ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’, until December 05. The case was taken up today (21) before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, Ada Derana reporter said. The suspects, who are currently held at the Boossa Prison, were produced before the court via Zoom technology. During the proceedings, an officer of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) submitted a progress report on the investigations conducted thus far. The officer also requested court permission to name a suspect identified as Supun Pradeep Kumara—who is presently in remand custody in connection with another incident—as the 35th suspect in the case. The Magistrate granted the request and ordered prison authorities to produce the suspect before the court at the next hearing. The CCD officer further informed the court that investigations will continue based on statements obtained from two suspects already in remand over the incident. He also sought permission to record statements from another suspect currently in remand, which was approved by the Magistrate. Additionally, the officer reported that copies of detention orders issued against three suspects, including the notorious underworld figure “Kehelbaddara Padme”—who are being interrogated at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)—have been submitted to the court. Accordingly, the CCD requested a date to report on the progress of the investigations and to extend the remand orders for the suspects. After considering the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered that all suspects be further remanded until December 05 and directed the CCD to present an updated progress report on that date.

Appeals Court upholds death sentence on five over 2019 drug charges

The Court of Appeal today (21) upheld the death sentence imposed on five defendants convicted of transporting over 152 kilograms of heroin along the southern coast in 2019, by the Colombo High Court. The order was issued by a Court of Appeal bench comprising Justices P. Kumaran Ratnam and Pradeep Hettiarachchi, dismissing the appeals filed by the defendants against the sentence, Ada Derana reporter said. The appeals sought orders to acquit the defendants and release them from the charges, claiming that the High Court’s decision to impose the death sentence was unlawful. Additional Solicitor General Shanil Kularatne, appearing for the Attorney General during the appeal hearing, informed the court that the defendants had been arrested with heroin during a raid conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy in international waters off the Galle area in 2019, following intelligence received by the security forces. He informed the court that the defendants transported the seized narcotics haul on the multi-day fishing vessel “Buddhima” and that investigations had revealed that the vessel had been used for drug transportation over a period of time. He further stated that information had emerged indicating the seized narcotics stock was intended to be handed over to a group in the Negombo area. Additional Solicitor General Shani Kularatne had requested the court to dismiss the appeals of the defendants, stating that the judgment given by the High Court against the defendants was lawful. Accordingly, the bench of the Court of Appeal, which considered the arguments presented by all factions, upheld the sentence imposed on the defendants by the High Court and dismissed their appeals.

16 passengers killed after night bus plunges off bridge in Cambodia

A passenger bus in Cambodia crashed off a bridge into a river, killing at least 16 passengers and injuring two dozen others, police said. The bus was traveling from Siem Reap, home to the fabled Angkor Wat temple complex, to the capital Phnom Penh, when it crashed early Thursday morning in the central province of Kampong Thom, the deputy police chief for the area, Siv Sovanna, told The Associated Press by phone. He said Friday the death toll rose from 13 to 16 after rescuers completed the search Thursday night. A preliminary investigation suggested the driver had been drowsy after his nighttime departure from Siem Reap, for what is normally about a 5½ hour trip, Siv Sovanna said. He didn’t say if the driver was among the dead. There were believed to have been about 40 passengers who boarded the bus. All those on the bus were Cambodians, police said. Traffic crashes in Cambodia killed 1,509 people in 2024, while 1,062 people were killed in the first nine months of 2025 in the country, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

World Insights: Johannesburg G20 summit to build Global South consensus on global governance

Lemmy Nyongesa Mulaku, a lecturer of international studies at the University of Nairobi, said, "The G20 summit provides an opportunity for a stronger partnership between China and Africa to not only push climate adaptation solutions ahead, but to entrench them into global governance institutions and structures." JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Group of 20 (G20) Leaders' Summit will convene over the weekend in Johannesburg, South Africa, the first ever to be held on African soil. Under the theme "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability," the summit highlights the moment for Africa as it seeks to amplify its voice in global governance and advance development priorities shared by the Global South. Observers say the event reflects Africa's rising influence and the international community's expectation that China and other Global South members will help build consensus on multilateralism and inclusive development. THIS TIME FOR AFRICA The African Union's entry into the G20 in 2023 was celebrated across the continent as an "African moment." Now, with the G20 Summit coming to Africa for the first time, analysts say it signals a historic shift: African countries are moving from passive participants to active contributors in shaping global agendas. Alvin Botes, deputy minister of international relations and cooperation of South Africa, said, "We are now working hand-in-hand with the African Union to amplify Africa's voice in global economic governance, whilst ensuring that the development priorities of the African Continent and the Global South find expression firmly onto the agenda of the G20." Since assuming the G20 presidency last year, South Africa has sought to orient the summit toward advancing the development agenda of the Global South, especially African countries and identified four priorities, namely strengthening disaster resilience and response, taking action to ensure debt sustainability for low-income countries, mobilizing finance for a just energy transition, and harnessing critical minerals for inclusive growth and sustainable development. Momar Diongue, director general of Senegalese News Agency, said, "The fact that the G20 is being held for the first time on the African continent is highly symbolic but also strategic: it places our economic priorities at the heart of global discussions." He added that thanks to regional integration, "Africa is becoming a driving force in making proposals." Peter Kagwanja, chief executive officer of Africa Policy Institute, a think tank in Kenya, said, "the growing participation by Africa in global decision-making processes marks a significant transformation in the international system, where countries in the Global South who were once marginalized and excluded from key discussions such as those focusing on financial reforms, debt sustainability and climate change, are now asserting their voice and influence boldly, and fully participate in solving those challenges." SOUTH-SOUTH MOMENTUM Amid rapid changes unseen in a century, sluggish global economic growth and a widening development deficit, African countries are grappling with climate shocks, mounting debt and other pressures. African experts said the Johannesburg summit will help promote cooperation, support Africa's development and offer an "African perspective" on tackling global challenges. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa viewed this year's summit as an opportunity to place the needs of Africa and the rest of the Global South more firmly on the international development agenda. "We expect the summit to make a political commitment to address debt vulnerabilities in low and middle-income countries," he said, adding that he expected the consensus reached at the event to include "a commitment to further strengthen the implementation of the G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatment in a predictable, timely and coordinated manner." Lemmy Nyongesa Mulaku, a lecturer of international studies at the University of Nairobi, said, "The G20 summit on the continent provides an opportunity to start genuine reforms aimed at re-balancing these relations through reform of global governance institutions such as the World Bank, IMF and WTO." "The G20 summit provides an opportunity for a stronger partnership between China and Africa to not only push climate adaptation solutions ahead, but to entrench them into global governance institutions and structures," he said. Observers note that Africa has made significant progress in green transition and the digital economy. As David Mugisha Begumya, a professor with International University of East Africa in Uganda, has put it, Africa holds enormous potential in addressing global climate challenges, making it a growing provider of green solutions. GLOBAL GOVERNANCE REFORM At a time when global governance reform stands at a crossroads, making sure that developing countries equally take part in major global governance decision-making is key to just and effective governance. China has been "the greatest and fundamental supporter" of promoting a more just and equitable international order, said Yarbane Kharrachi, adviser to the minister of higher education and scientific research in Mauritania, pointing to Beijing's early backing of the African Union's accession to the G20. Ahead of the summit, the United States announced its decision not to participate in the event and warned South Africa against pushing for a joint statement. "Boycott politics never work," Ramaphosa said in response. "If you boycott an event or a process, you lose because the show will go on." African analysts observe that this once again underscores the urgency of global governance reform. South Africa's firm stance, they say, reflects the determination of Global South countries to push for a fairer global governance system and replace unilateral dominance with multilateral cooperation. China brings its distinct cultural and intellectual capital to the table, offering alternative perspectives on global governance and development, said David Monyae, director of the Center for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg. "This approach embodies the principle that all civilizations are equal, a principle that should guide Africa and other Global South countries in collaboratively shaping development and governance agendas," he said.

Financial regulation more complex than other sectors as it safeguards systemic stability: RBI Governor

New Delhi [India], November 21 (ANI): Financial regulation carries far greater complexity and consequence than regulatory frameworks in most other sectors, as it not only protects individual customers but also safeguards systemic stability, stated Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra. Delivering the Second V.K.R.V. Rao Memorial Lecture at the Delhi School of Economics in New Delhi on Thursday, the Governor highlighted that financial regulation plays a critical role in maintaining the health of the overall economy. He stated, 'Financial regulation is more complex and more consequential than regulation in other sectors. It is not merely about protecting individual consumers and promoting efficiency - though these are of paramount importance - but also about safeguarding systemic stability.' Malhotra said financial institutions are interconnected in ways non-financial entities rarely are, making the financial system highly sensitive to shocks. 'If a bank fails, it has a cascading effect - depositors lose savings, inter-bank markets freeze, credit supply contracts and payment systems falter,' he said. Such disruptions, he added, flow into the broader economy and may eventually trigger a systemic crisis. He pointed out that the 2008 global financial crisis in the Advanced Economies (AEs) demonstrated this with devastating clarity. The RBI Governor further explained that the inherent fragility of financial institutions adds to the regulatory challenges. Banks operate on maturity and liquidity transformation, accepting short-term deposits and extending long-term loans. While this function is economically valuable, it creates vulnerabilities that can rapidly escalate during periods of uncertainty. 'A loss of confidence can trigger bank runs, converting liquidity problems into solvency crises within days,' he said. Unlike a manufacturing unit that can be shut down temporarily, a bank facing a run must be resolved immediately to prevent contagion. Malhotra also highlighted the procyclical and herd-driven nature of financial markets. During boom periods, risks are under-priced, lending standards weaken and asset bubbles emerge. Conversely, during downturns, credit recedes precisely when it is most required. This amplification of business cycles, he said, makes financial markets distinctly more volatile compared to most other sectors. He emphasised that for the Reserve Bank, financial stability remains the 'north star'. Short-term growth achieved at the cost of stability, he cautioned, can lead to deeper long-term damage. He said financial instability can not only offset gains from high short-term growth but also make economic recovery slower and more distressing. Defining financial stability, the Governor said it is a condition in which the financial system, comprising financial intermediaries, markets and market infrastructure, is capable of withstanding shocks and the unravelling of financial imbalances, thereby reducing the probability of disruptions that significantly impair the allocation of savings to profitable investment opportunities. Avi Loeb 'Visibly Frustrated' As NASA Ignores 3I/ATLAS Anomalies At Live Event

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has publicly expressed frustration after NASA officials brushed off his concerns about unexplained features in 3I/ATLAS, the third confirmed interstellar object to visit our Solar System. The tense exchange unfolded during a live Newsmax appearance, where both sides offered starkly different interpretations of the object's behaviour. NASA's acting Administrator, Sean Duffy, doubled down on the agency's line: 'It walks like a comet, talks like a comet, struts like a comet. It's a comet.' Loeb, however, insisted the evidence remains incomplete — and far stranger than NASA is willing to admit. Loeb Says Science Requires Humility, Not Slogans The clash centred on what Loeb calls 'significant anomalies'. Speaking on-air, he emphasised that scientific conclusions must rest on data rather than authority: 'The foundation of science is the humility to learn, not the arrogance of expertise.' Loeb argued that merely invoking 'experts' is not an explanation. Instead, he wants quantitative evidence for NASA's position — and says the current data set shows unresolved contradictions. One of the biggest questions, in his view, is the report of seven jets emanating from 3I/ATLAS: They could be normal cometary vents.Or, Loeb argues, they could be thrust-like features. He claims his calculations show the object lacks enough surface area to sustain the mass flow expected from so many jets if it were a standard comet. Loeb Presses NASA on Missing Images and Delayed Releases Loeb also criticised NASA for the slow release of high-resolution data from the HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The images were captured when 3I/ATLAS passed roughly 19 million miles from Mars, a rare vantage point. Duffy blamed staffing shortages linked to the US government shutdown. Loeb dismissed that outright: 'We've had 45 days since the images were taken ... They definitely had plenty of time.' He argued the issue is larger than one administrator: 'It just shows you how sluggish bureaucracy is. Bureaucracy is taking over science.' The Anomalies Loeb Says NASA Is Downplaying Multiple features of 3I/ATLAS continue to raise eyebrows — not only for Loeb, but among a subset of astronomers following the object. 1. Lack of a Tail Despite signs of strong non-gravitational acceleration, 3I/ATLAS showed no obvious dust tail in early observations — an unusual trait for a comet nearing the Sun. 2. CO₂-Dominated Coma Infrared data from the James Webb Space Telescope found the object's coma heavily dominated by carbon dioxide, an uncommon profile among typical comets. 3. The 'Anti-Tail' Loeb and collaborator Eric Keto modelled a structure resembling an anti-tail — a bright extension pointing toward the Sun rather than away from it, contradicting expected behaviour. These features do not prove the object is artificial, but they also do not fully align with standard comet dynamics. Critics Push Back Not all astronomers are persuaded. On Reddit, some cited commentary from Penn State's Jason Wright, who argued Loeb's calculations are 'demonstrably wrong' and that the broader scientific community has already examined the anomalies and found them unremarkable. NASA has maintained its position that 3I/ATLAS is simply a highly unusual but natural comet. A Debate Far From Over In a separate interview with Cambridge Day, Loeb said scientists have a responsibility to consider low-probability possibilities: 'We have the duty to consider a low-probability event ... because the implications are huge.' As NASA continues to release data — and Loeb continues to challenge its interpretations — 3I/ATLAS remains one of the most debated interstellar visitors in years. Originally published on IBTimes UK

Venezuela's Maduro Says 'Heavy Weaponry And Missiles' Have Been Deployed In Key Areas Due To Tensions With U.S.

Venezuela's authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro said his regime has deployed "heavy weaponry and missiles" in a key part of the country as tensions with the Donald Trump administration remain high. Maduro said the deployment is part of a "comprehensive defense plan" and fortifies the corridor between Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira. He showed the area in a map during a televised address, noting that the plan detailed how the regime intends to defend the population from external threats "street by street, community by community, weapon by weapon, weapons system by weapons system." In another passage of the address, Maduro added that an "arsenal of weapons for the militiamen and militiawomen is already in place." He claimed that over 8 million people enrolled in the militia during a drive in August after the U.S. began its military deployment in the area. The show of force comes as the Cartel de los Soles, which the U.S. accuses Maduro and other top officials of leading, is days away from being officially designated as a terrorist organization, which would pave the way for military action. The Department of State said in a statement that the designation will go into effect on November 24, adding that the organization is "headed by Nicolás Maduro and other high-ranking individuals of the illegitimate Maduro regime who have corrupted Venezuela's military, intelligence, legislature, and judiciary." "Neither Maduro nor his cronies represent Venezuela's legitimate government. Cartel de los Soles by and with other designated FTOs including Tren de Aragua and the Sinaloa Cartel are responsible for terrorist violence throughout our hemisphere as well as for trafficking drugs into the United States and Europe," the release adds. Trump has also approved CIA plans to conduct covert operations inside Venezuela, which could potentially pave the way for broader military action inside the country, according to another report. In this context, the White House said it is not negotiating with the regime, even though President Donald Trump said days ago that authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro wants to dialogue and that such a scenario could take place. The New York Times had reported that Trump had in fact authorized back channel negotiations with the regime. Originally published on Latin Times

John Fetterman Slams Trump For Saying Dems Who Urged The Military To Refuse Orders Engaged In 'Seditious Behavior' Punishable 'By Death'

Sen. John Fetterman slammed President Donald Trump for saying that Democratic lawmakers who urged the military to refuse obeying certain orders were engaging in "seditious behavior" that is "punishable by death." "I strongly reject this dangerous rhetoric. Do not threaten Members of Congress. Republican or Democrat. It's deeply wrong with no exceptions—ever," Fetterman said in a social media publication. Trump made the claim on Thursday after a group of Democratic lawmakers with military or intelligence service backgrounds urged the military to refuse unlawful orders. They didn't specify which orders they were referring to, but the administration has faced scrutiny over its strikes against alleged drug vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, which have so far killed more than 80 people. They accused the administration of "pitting our uniformed military and intelligence community professionals against American citizens." "Right now, the threats to our constitution aren't just coming from abroad, but from right here at home," they said. "You can refuse illegal orders." In a social media post, Trump said "this is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???" In another post he claimed they had engaged in "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" Trump also reposted a message from a user who urged him to "hang" the lawmakers, claiming George Washington would have done that. Originally published on Latin Times

Fire disrupts COP30, 13 treated for smoke inhalation

Talks at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil have been disrupted after a fire broke out in the venue, triggering an evacuation just as negotiators were hunkering down to try to land a deal to strengthen international climate efforts. Officials said the fire, which erupted at one of the country exhibition pavilions, had been brought under control with 13 people treated for smoke inhalation. "Earlier today, a fire broke out in the Blue Zone of the COP30 venue in Belém. The fire department and UN security officers responded swiftly, and the fire was controlled in approximately six minutes. People were evacuated safely," the organisers said in a statement. "Thirteen individuals were treated on site for smoke inhalation. Their condition is being monitored, and appropriate medical support has been provided." Summit organisers added that Brazilian fire officials ordered the evacuation of the summit's entire premises. The summit in the Amazon city of Belem was initially scheduled to wrap up on Friday but it missed a self-imposed Wednesday deadline to secure agreement among the nearly 200 countries present on issues including plans to phase out oil, gas and coal. Developing countries are also pushing for a substantial increase in climate adaptation finance from industrialised countries, arguing that stronger support is essential as they face worsening storms, droughts, wildfires and floods. The fire scare occurred in what is already a hive of activity during the summit's two-week run, interrupting ongoing negotiations inside the venue. A siren sent delegates, observers and journalists running for the exits with their belongings as police lined up as a barrier to prevent anyone from nearing the area where the fire was reported. TV footage showed flames and smoke inside the venue, a conference centre on the site of a former airport. Sabino told journalists that the fire started near the China Pavilion, which was among several pavilions set up for events on the sidelines of the climate talks. The fire quickly spread to neighbouring pavilions, said Samuel Rubin, one of the people in charge of an entertainment and culture pavilion. He said nearby pavilions include many of the Africa pavilions and one aimed at youth. Para state governor Helder Barbalho told local news outlet G1 that a generator failure or a short circuit in a booth may have started the fire. Organisers said the summit venue would not reopen before 9am AEDT. Brazil circulated a draft deal among governments on Thursday which did not include a roadmap on transitioning away from fossil fuels, two negotiators told Reuters, although the document is still being discussed. Emissions from burning fossil fuels trap heat in the earth's atmosphere and are by far the biggest contributor to warming. There are less than 48 hours until the scheduled end of the summit to find a consensus, which host nation Brazil has framed as a crucial step to ramping up international climate action and demonstrating that there is broad support to accelerate turning decades of promises and pledges from the COP summits into concrete action. "One thing is clear, we are down to the wire, and the world is watching Belem," United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. with AP and DPA Australian Associated Press

East Bengal beaten by defending champions Wuhan Jiangda in AFC Women's Champions League

Indian club East Bengal FC suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of defending champions Wuhan Jiangda FC of China after a first-half brace by Wang Shuang in their AFC Women's Champions League Group B match here on Thursday. East Bengal, who had defeated Iran's Bam Khatoon FC 3-1 in their first game, can still progress to the quarter-finals if they avoid defeat with a margin of more than two goals against Uzbekistan's PFC Nasaf on November 23. The top two finishers in each of the three groups and the two best third-placed sides will make it to the knock-outs. Wuhan Jiangda's early pressure nearly paid off in the seventh minute when Deng Mengye burst through off Wang Shuang's through ball but drove her shot from the right into East Bengal goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu. But the Moshal Girls conceded a minute later (8th) when Wang Shuang met Song Fei's cross from the left, tucking home the ball past a sprawling Panthoi. The pressure got to East Bengal when they conceded a penalty, following a VAR review, after Panthoi brought down Wang Shuang inside the box, with the 2018 AFC Women's Footballer of the Year making no mistake from the spot in the 17th minute. East Bengal had a chance to reduce the deficit, but Soumya Guguloth flashed her attempt over the bar in the 23rd minute, while Panthoi did enough to foil Mavis Owusu from advancing after Wang Shuang had slipped a well-timed through ball. Panthoi continued to frustrate Wuhan Jiangda in the second half with a point-blank stop in the 56th minute to deny Owusu before foiling Kim Hye-ri in the 61st minute following Deng Mengye's layoff. The East Bengal custodian continued to be a thorn for Wuhan Jiangda as she kept out Deng Mengye and later stopped Owusu in her tracks with a fine tackle in the 73rd minute. A lapse in concentration in the 77th minute by Wuhan Jiangda almost gave East Bengal a break when Soumya Guguloth sent Sushmita Lepcha through on goal, only for the midfielder to hit a wayward shot at the end to sum up their frustrating evening.

Judge Orders Trump Administration To End National Guard Deployment In DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Trump administration to end its monthslong deployment of National Guard troops to help police the nation’s capital. U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb concluded that President Donald Trump’s military takeover in Washington, D.C., violates the Constitution and illegally intrudes on local officials’ authority to direct law enforcement in the district. She put her order on hold for 21 days to allow for an appeal, however. District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb sued to challenge the Guard deployments. He asked the judge to bar the White House from deploying Guard troops without the mayor’s consent. Cobb found that the president only has the power to call up the Guard “through the exercise of a specific power outlined in state law,” not for “whatever reason” he sees fit. In August, President Donald Trump issued an executive order declaring a crime emergency in Washington. Within a month, more than 2,300 National Guard troops from eight states and the district were patrolling the city under the command of the Secretary of the Army. Trump also deployed hundreds of federal agents to assist in patrols. It’s unclear how long the deployments will last, but attorneys from Schwalb’s office said Guard troops are likely to remain in the city through at least next summer. “Our constitutional democracy will never be the same if these occupations are permitted to stand,” they wrote. Government lawyers said Congress empowered the president to control the D.C. National Guard’s operation. They argued that Schwalb’s lawsuit is a frivolous “political stunt” threatening to undermine a successful campaign to reduce violent crime in the district. “There is no sensible reason for an injunction unwinding this arrangement now, particularly since the District’s claims have no merit,” Justice Department attorneys wrote. Trump’s Guard deployments have led to other court challenges, including in Portland, Chicago and Los Angeles. In Washington, the Trump administration deputized Guard troops to serve as special U.S. Marshal Service deputies. Schwalb’s office said out-of-state troops are impermissibly operating as a federal military police force in D.C., inflaming tensions with residents and diverting local police resources. “Every day that this lawless incursion continues, the District suffers harm to its sovereign authority to conduct local law enforcement as it chooses,” his office’s attorneys wrote.

Ryan Willaims gets FIFA approval, officially eligible for selection to Indian team

Ryan Willaims is officially eligible for selection to the Indian team as he has got FIFA approval for the change of member association after relinquishing his Australian citizenship, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Thursday. The 32-year-old Perth-born forward, who plays for Indian Super League side Bengaluru FC, has recently given up his Australian passport to become an Indian citizen. "FIFA's Players' Status Chamber issued its final decision on November 19, 2025, approving the change of association request for Ryan Williams, thereby making him formally eligible to represent the Indian national team," the AIFF said in a statement. "With the ruling now in effect, Ryan Williams is officially eligible for selection to the Indian national team." The AIFF said it "adhered fully to FIFA's regulatory requirements throughout the process." "Following the submission, FIFA's Players’ Status Chamber reviewed the request in alignment with the standards set out in the RGAS. The Chamber delivered its decision on November 19, confirming that all eligibility criteria had been satisfied and approving the player's change of association to India.” Williams' mother was born in Mumbai while his father was born in Kent, England. He has played for Australia U-20 and U-23 teams, and also represented the senior team as a second-half substitute during a friendly in 2019 against South Korea. He has also represented English clubs Fulham and Portsmouth, before joining Bengaluru FC in 2023. Before Williams, Japan-born Izumi Arata took Indian citizenship to represent India in 2012, and featured in nine matches for the Blue Tigers in 2013 and 2014. Williams was in Dhaka with the Indian squad for the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying round match against Bangladesh, which the Khalid Jamil-coached team lost 0-1. He was not in the match day squad as he did not get clearance from the FIFA at that time, though he had received the NOC from Australia.
