Judge Brian Cregan ordered Burke’s re-committal to prison for contempt of court on Tuesday, following the former teacher’s repeated trespassing at Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath. Burke has been jailed for contempt of court multiple times for breaching an injunction that requires him to stay away from Wilson’s, following his dismissal for gross misconduct after he interrupted a religious service and confronted the school’s principal. The former teacher maintains he is being persecuted for his religious opposition to a requirement to address a transgender pupil by their preferred pronouns, a claim that was strongly rejected by judge Cregan in his judgment on Tuesday. Burke had been released after refusing to purge his contempt but was directed to pay fines every time he breached the order instead; he now owes the State more than €225,000 after continuing to trespass at the school. Advertisement However, judge Cregan said on Tuesday that the of fines had not stopped Burke from turning up at the school and ordered his imprisonment again for “repeated and flagrant breaches of the court order”. Footage posted on social media yesterday by accounts associated with Burke shows how gardaí twice called to his family home in Castlebar to carry out the court order. In the first video – filmed by one of Burke’s sisters during the daytime and posted at around 6pm yesterday evening – a garda is seen asking whether Burke is present at the house; when no answer is given, gardaí are shown leaving the property. A second video – filmed when it is dark outside and posted shortly before midnight – again shows gardaí asking whether Burke is present, and telling the teacher’s father Sean about the order from the High Court ordering Enoch’s committal to prison. After a garda asks where Enoch is and receives no response, the video shows gardaí leaving the property. It has also been reported that Burke has stopped showing up to Wilson’s since the High Court order was made on Tuesday. A Garda spokesperson confirmed that the force has an order relating to contempt of court by “a named individual” but that it does not comment on the details of ongoing operations.

Trump signs bill mandating release of Epstein files

Trump signs bill mandating release of Epstein files US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed legislation directing the Department of Justice (DOJ) to publicly release all files related to the case of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. The move formally concludes a push by Congress for transparency that had put political pressure on the White House. “I HAVE JUST SIGNED THE BILL TO RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES,” Trump announced on Truth Social, following the bill's overwhelming approval by Congress, where it passed the House 427-1 and was unanimously approved by the Senate on Tuesday. The measure, known as the “Epstein Files Transparency Act,” was formally sent to the President's desk on Wednesday morning. In announcing the signing, President Trump intensified his focus on the Democratic Party, claiming the case “affects” members of the Democratic Party “much more than the Republican Party.” He also linked the declassification push to what he called other “witch hunts and scams” against him, suggesting they were strategies aimed at distracting from his administration's work. Trump also accused the [former President Joseph] Biden administration of not turning over “a SINGLE file or page related to Democrat Epstein.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) called the bill’s passage a “good victory for victims, for the American people, for transparency,” stating that “Democrats fought and fought and fought to have this happen.” The President's signature comes days after his sudden shift in position; he had previously opposed the proposal until the prior week. That reversal occurred shortly after a House committee released a batch of emails in which Epstein allegedly claimed Trump had “spent hours” with one of the victims and “knew about the girls.” The passage of the bill brought expressions of relief and vindication from survivors of Epstein's abuse.

IDB grants Uruguay US$25 million loan for security improvements

IDB grants Uruguay US$25 million loan for security improvements Uruguay's Interior Ministry has secured the first disbursement of a US$200 million credit line from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with an initial US$25 million tranche set for execution in 2026 to modernize the country's public security apparatus. The financing supports the government's ambitious 2025–2035 National Public Security Plan, aiming to address longstanding concerns about rising crime and prison conditions. “This loan is a further demonstration that public safety is a priority for the government,” said Undersecretary of the Interior, Gabriela Valverde, confirming the initial funds will focus on three key areas: strengthening police training, intelligence and criminal analysis, and the prison system. The US$25 million disbursement is to be split, with US$12 million to improve the heavily scrutinized prison system, which has faced issues with overcrowding and conditions, including the construction of a new admission, diagnosis, and referral center for inmates in the interior of the country (specifically Durazno), to simplify processes north of the Negro River. Resources will also be used to reinforce electronic security in several prison units nationwide and to strengthen programs for the care and treatment of inmates. Then some US$7 million will be to Police training and equipment through the professionalization of the police force, including a new curriculum framework. Funds will also be used to equip and modernize the building infrastructure of the Montevideo Police Academy. The financing of a program to consolidate police leadership with a gender perspective is also included. The remainder of the funds will be used to purchase scientific and technological equipment to enhance criminal investigations, particularly in areas like cybercrime and organized crime. “In future operations, we will complete the US$200 million,” Valverde stated, emphasizing that the IDB commitment allows the ministry to initiate its 10-year security plan beyond the government's own resources.

Chinese and French carmakers join forces in Brazil to develop electric vehicles

Chinese and French carmakers join forces in Brazil to develop electric vehicles Chinese automaker Geely has officially re-entered the Brazilian market by merging with the local subsidiary of France's Renault. The new entity, named 'Renault Geely do Brasil,' will jointly manufacture four new electrified vehicle models at the Ayrton Senna Complex factory in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná state, by 2027. The partnership involves a significant investment plan of R$3.8 billion (US$672 million) to develop electrified platforms and new hybrid and electric models. The merger was solidified by Geely's acquisition of a 26.4% stake in Renault's local capital, marking the start of a far-reaching industrial and technological alliance in Brazil. The investment will modernize the industrial complex to adapt it for the manufacturing of low and zero-emission vehicles, aiming to “accelerate the brands' development in the national market” and boost the transition to sustainable mobility. The implementation of Geely's GEA mechanical platform for hybrid and electric vehicles will serve as the base for two new Geely models. Renault will also launch a renewed version of an existing model (possibly Duster or Kwid). By 2027, local production of a new, dedicated Renault electrified platform for hybrid and electric models is set to begin. The announcement was attended by high-ranking officials, including Brazil's Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, who praised the initiative, noting it aligns with the government's Mover program, which promotes sustainable industrial investment and has already mobilized R$190 billion in private investments planned until 2033. The partnership in Brazil builds upon existing global collaborations between the two companies, which are already partners in the Republic of Korea and share ownership of Horse Powertrain, a company developing hybrid and internal combustion engines. The alliance is viewed as a commitment to the long-term future of Brazil's auto sector, strengthening industrial competitiveness and supporting the country's move toward electric mobility. Chinese electric vehicles are driving a historic boom in electric mobility in Colombia, contributing to a massive 93.7% growth in sales recorded in October, marking the largest sales increase ever seen in the Colombian market. According to the National Federation of Merchants (Fenalco) and the National Association of Businessmen (Andi), Chinese brands are the primary force behind this sharp rise, with six Chinese automakers ranking among the top 10 best-selling brands in the local market. From January to October of this year, electric vehicle sales in Colombia surpassed 14,000 units, representing a 150% growth compared to the same period in 2024. The trend became visible at the 2025 Bogotá International Auto Show, where brands such as BYD, JAC Motors, FAW, DEEPAL, and DFAC-DONGFENG are showcasing renewed portfolios focused on electric vehicles. BYD commands a dominant 50% to 55% share of the electric car market. Of the 14,000 EVs sold in the last year, approximately 7,500 were BYD models. The brand's 2025 launches of cars and SUV models have resulted in a 250% sales increase compared to 2024, the company's Product Manager in Colombia, Leidy Sylva, explained. “We have managed to remove the taboo that having an electric car is unattainable and have brought them closer to a technology that they felt was very distant,” said Sylva. The market is also seeing interest in high-end electric vehicles. Zeekr, a premium electric brand that arrived a year ago, is already among the top 20 best-selling EV brands. Zeekr's Brand Manager José Luis Porras noted that growing charging infrastructure and a consumer desire to contribute to environmental care are motivating factors. Consumers are opting for EVs because they are quiet, easy to drive, can be charged at home, and offer significant economic benefits. The 2025 Auto Show will run through Nov. 23 and features over 60 brands operating in the Colombian market.

Chile: LATAM Airlines pilots' union ends 8-day strike

Chile: LATAM Airlines pilots' union ends 8-day strike LATAM Airlines Group and the SPL pilots' union (Sindicato de Pilotos de Latam) reached an agreement late Wednesday, concluding the airline’s first pilot strike since 1997. The work stoppage, which involved 464 unionized pilots, had led to widespread flight cancellations over the past eight days. The new collective agreement, which establishes competitive working conditions and guarantees the company’s sustainability, will be in force from 2025 through 2028. The strike, which began on November 12, followed the failure of mandatory mediation after 97% of the union members rejected the company’s final offer on November 3. Negotiations, which began on September 1, reportedly stalled over the level of salary adjustments for 2026 and 2027. The pilots had sought a 1.5% adjustment for those years, which the company deemed “unaffordable.” SPL leader Mario Troncoso acknowledged the effort, stating, ”We want to thank our members for their unity, trust, and courage, as well as the Chilean and foreign unions that expressed their support and solidarity, and the Labor Directorate (DT) for its responsible and professional mediation in this process.“ The company expressed its gratitude in a statement to the DT for its ”professionalism“ and regretted the complications faced by passengers. While the strike is over, the airline confirmed operations would not normalize immediately. Flight cancellations communicated to passengers through November 24 will remain in effect. LATAM expects operations to return to normal on November 25. LATAM Vice President of Customer Service Paulo Miranda thanked the teams that worked during the strike ”to protect passengers,” while advising travelers to continue checking the status of their flights through the airline's official channels.

Argentine province back to pandemic-era measures as Covid-19 resurges

Argentine province back to pandemic-era measures as Covid-19 resurges The Argentine province of Formosa has confirmed a significant resurgence of Covid-19, prompting health officials to re-establish preventative measures associated with the pandemic and leading to an urgent plea to the National Government over delayed vaccine deliveries. Formosa, which maintains systematic Covid-19 testing, reported a 24% positivity rate in the last epidemiological week, confirming 341 positive cases out of 1,422 tests conducted. The majority of new infections (250) were recorded in the provincial capital. This positivity rate aligns with national surveillance trends. Formosa's high testing volume provides a clearer picture compared to the overall national data, which suffers from a high degree of underreporting due to a drastic decline in testing. The province currently has 408 active cases, but has reported no new deaths or hospitalizations last week. In response to the sharp increase in infections, the provincial Ministry of Human Development has advised the community to revert to the preventive measures used during the height of the pandemic, including the use of facemasks in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces, continuous cross-ventilation of closed environments, frequent hand washing, sneezing or coughing into the elbow, strictly avoiding sharing personal utensils such as mate, tereré straws, bottles, or glasses. Formosa's Epidemiology Director Claudia Rodríguez noted that the lack of severe outcomes, such as deaths or hospitalizations, causes the public to “lose the perception of risk.” She stressed that vaccination remains a crucial tool to “reduce the transmissibility of the virus.” A core concern compounding the outbreak is the province's inability to continue its immunization campaign due to a lack of available vaccines. Rodríguez confirmed that Formosa “does not have the necessary doses,” alleging that the vaccines are currently being held at Argentine Customs. “The Covid-19 vaccines are at the Argentine Customs Office. It is the responsibility of the national government, through the Ministry of Public Health, to take the necessary steps to retrieve them and distribute them to the provinces,” Rodríguez stated. “Although we have been requesting supplies from the national government, there has been no response. The vaccines ran out several weeks ago.” While infectious disease specialists have called the data “a wake-up call” rather than a cause for alarm, they emphasized that the virus is still a danger, particularly to the elderly and immunocompromised, and urged citizens to keep vaccination schedules up to date.

Patna, November 20: Ahead of Janata Dal United chief Nitish Kumar taking oath as Bihar Chief Minister for a record 10th time on Thursday, posters of all of them along with other NDA leaders as well as that of LJP(RV) chief Chirag Paswan were put up outside Gandhi Maidan venue in Patna. The historic Gandhi Maidan has hosted his inaugurations in 2005, 2010, and 2015. It is at this venue that Jayaprakash Narayan called for "total revolution" during a speech in 1974. The stage is set at Gandhi Maidan in Patna for the swearing-in ceremony of the NDA government in Bihar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other prominent leaders of the NDA are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. The PM had skipped the swearing-in ceremony in the year 2020. Nitish Kumar was first elected as leader of the JD (U) Legislature Party during the meeting with the new MLAs held at his official residence in Patna yesterday. He was also unanimously elected as leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Legislature Party ahead of the formation of a new government under his leadership in the State today. Nitish Kumar to Take Oath As Bihar CM for 10th Time at Gandhi Maidan; PM Narendra Modi to Attend Swearing-In Ceremony. Along with Kumar's deputies, Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) or [LJP (RV)] chief Chirag Paswan, and Bihar Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal were present on the occasion. The 2025 Bihar Assembly polls were considered as the litmus test for Nitish Kumar, who has managed to steer the politics of Bihar around him in every election over the past 20 years. He has been Chief Minister since November 2005, with a brief nine-month gap in 2014-15. Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Patna last evening and was accorded a welcome by BJP National President JP Nadda, Bihar BJP President Dilip Jaiswal and other leaders at the airport. Janata Dal (United) supremo Nitish Kumar has staked a claim to form the government in Bihar after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept 202 assembly constituencies. He met Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday and tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister. Various Chief Ministers of NDA-rule states are also expected to attend the ceremony. Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda have already reached Patna ahead of the oath ceremony. The NDA registered a historic landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar assembly polls, winning 202 of the 243 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan managed to secure only 35 seats. The ruling alliance secured a three-fourths majority in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, marking the second time the NDA crossed the 200-seat mark in state polls. In 2010, it had won 206 seats.
