Dawgs, Longhorns peak prior to clash

ATHENS, Ga. -- A rematch of last season's SEC Championship Game finds No. 5 Georgia and No. 11 Texas peaking for a game that could impact this season's conference race and will be crucial to each team's College Football Playoff hopes. Texas (7-2, 4-1) will take a four-game winning streak into Saturday night's game at Sanford Stadium. Georgia (8-1, 6-1) extended its winning streak to five games with last week's 41-21 win at Mississippi State. Coach Kirby Smart called the win a "total team effort." Gunner Stockton came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime win over Texas in last year's SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Despite both teams carrying top-10 rankings in the AP top 25 -- Georgia was No. 5 and Texas No. 10 in Sunday's poll -- they do not control their hopes of returning to the SEC title game. No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 4 Alabama have no SEC losses and are on course to play in Atlanta. Even so, much is on the line this week. The Bulldogs and Longhorns are playing to remain in position to enter a possible tiebreaker scenario if either Alabama or Texas A&M lose. They also will be playing to protect their playoff hopes. From the outside, it looks like the SEC's game of the week. From the view of Georgia players, who already have played top 25 conference games against Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, plus a close win over Florida, the visit from Texas feels like just another week in the SEC. "I mean, you've got to approach every single game the same in this league," tight end Oscar Delp said Monday. "I mean, playing at Georgia, you know, you're going to get every team's best shot. I mean, no matter who we're playing we're the game of the year." Even so, Delp hinted the visit from quarterback Arch Manning and Texas might bring more than just the "another game" vibe to the prime-time SEC showdown. "I think everyone understands what the magnitude is of every game we play, especially this one," Delp said. "So we're super excited to get out there and play." Sophomore safety KJ Bolden said Georgia's grind of top 25 tests will pay off in the postseason. "I feel that this is great for our team that it gets us ready for, you know, later down the season, getting ready for those big type of games," Bolden said. "So I feel like that will definitely help us down the road." Stockton, who threw three touchdown passes in last week's win over Mississippi State, has gained momentum as a passer in his first season as Georgia's starter after playing behind Carson Beck in 2024. Stockton has thrown for nine touchdowns the last three weeks, forcing defenses to respect the pass and opening running room for Nate Frazier, who ran for 181 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown run, last week. When asked Monday what Stockton has added to Georgia's offense, Smart said, "Toughness. He's brought wisdom. He's brought consistency. ... He's made good decisions with the ball in terms of keeping us out of bad situations. He's avoided a lot of sacks. He's avoided catastrophic situations in terms of turnovers." Smart said Stockton has "improved throughout the season." Manning also has enjoyed a surge following a slow start. Manning has passed for 674 yards and 6 touchdowns with just 1 interception the last two games. Smart, who recruited Manning, said he sees the Texas quarterback "playing with more confidence." Smart added Manning has "made some 'wow' throws" this season.

Taiwan evacuates 3000 as Typhoon Fung-wong approaches

Taiwan has evacuated more than 3000 people, issuing a land warning for the arrival of Typhoon Fung-wong, which is expected to dump large volumes of rain on its mountainous east coast, recently lashed by another typhoon. The weakening Fung-wong is forecast to hit land on Wednesday on the island's southwestern coast around the major port of Kaohsiung, after it killed 18 people while powering through the Philippines as a much stronger system. "Fung-wong may have been downgraded to a weak typhoon, but we still cannot lower our guard," Chen Chi-mai, the city's mayor, told reporters on Tuesday. On his Facebook page, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te urged people to keep clear of the mountains, the coast and other potentially dangerous areas. The transport ministry said 66, mostly domestic, flights were cancelled on Tuesday. Fung-wong is expected to cross the bottom part of Taiwan and enter the Pacific Ocean along the coast of the sparsely populated eastern counties of Taitung and Hualien. A typhoon in September unleashed flooding that killed 18 people in Hualien. The government, which has ordered evacuations in the town of Guangfu, the scene of those deadly floods, said 3337 people in four counties and cities had been moved to safer areas. Hualien closed schools and offices on Tuesday, as did the neighbouring county of Yilan. The typhoon will not directly affect the northern city of Hsinchu, home to TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker. Most deaths in the Philippines were caused by landslides in its mountainous northern Cordilleras, senior civil defence official Raffy Alejandro told a briefing, with two people reported missing and 28 injured. Nithari serial killings case: SC acquits Surendra Koli, orders immediate release - The Tribune

The Supreme Court on Tuesday acquitted Surendra Koli in one of the Nithari murder cases by allowing his curative petition challenging conviction, paving the way for his release.Koli was earlier acquitted in other Nithari killing cases. The Nithari killings came to light with the discovery of skeletal remains of eight children from a drain behind businessman Moninder Singh’s Pandher’s house at Nithari in Noida on December 29, 2006. Koli was the domestic help at Pandher’s house at that time. The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justices Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, which had heard Koli’s petition in the open court.“For the reasons recorded above, the curative petition is allowed,” Justice Nath said while pronouncing the order. The top court acquitted Koli in the case and quashed the sentence and fine imposed upon him earlier.“The petitioner shall be released forthwith, if not required in any other case or proceeding,” the bench said.Koli was convicted for the rape and murder of a 15-year-old girl in Noida’s Nithari village, and his conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court in February 2011.His review plea was dismissed in 2014.However, in January 2015, the Allahabad High Court commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment due to an inordinate delay in the decision on his mercy petition. In October 2023, the Allahabad High Court acquitted Koli and co-accused Pandher in several other Nithari cases, overturning the death sentences awarded by the trial court in 2017.The court acquitted Koli in 12 cases and Pandher in two.The CBI and the victims’ families later challenged these acquittals before the Supreme Court, but the top court dismissed all 14 appeals on July 30 this year.On October 7, the top court reserved its verdict on Koli’s curative petition, observing that his plea “deserves to be allowed”.Observing that an “anomalous situation” had arisen following Koli’s acquittal in all other related cases, the apex court had remarked that the petition “deserves to be allowed”.The bench had noted that the conviction in the case was largely based on a statement and the recovery of a kitchen knife, raising questions about the sufficiency of evidence. The CBI had taken over the case and its search resulted in the recovery of more human remains.

19th annual Stand Up for Heroes event held as part of New York Comedy Festival

NEW YOR CITY -- Monday night was filled with laughs and heart to raise money for veterans and their families. The 19th annual Stand Up for Heroes event was held at New York City's Lincoln Center as part of the New York Comedy Festival. It featured performances by comedians and musicians, including Jim Gaffigan, Idina Menzel, Lea Michele, Leslie Odom, Jon Stewart and more. "Anything where we can kind of contribute in some small way to acknowledge and maybe assist helping veterans and their families is a no brainer," Gaffigan said. The event spotlights inspiring stories of resilience and service, and raises awareness and money for the foundation started by our colleague at ABC, Bob Woodruff. The foundation's mission is to help veterans, service members and their families. "For these guys to come in and do some comedy on the topic that we deal with all the time, it's like a form of therapy," Woodruff said. Stand Up for Heroes has raised more than $100 million to date for veterans and military families.

Jannik Sinner Opens ATP Finals Title Defense by Beating Auger-Aliassime

Turin: Jannik Sinner got his title defense at the ATP Finals off to a solid start before his home fans with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Monday. To also claim the year-end No. 1 ranking. Sinner needs to win the season-ending event for the top eight players and hope Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t reach the final. No. 8-ranked Auger-Aliassime appeared slowed by a left calf issue and was twice treated by a trainer during the second set. Sinner won the title in Turin last year without dropping a set and hasn’t lost at the event since the 2023 final to Novak Djokovic. Sinner has also won all four of his meetings with Auger-Aliassime this year, including a U.S. Open semifinal and the recent Paris Masters final. Sinner and Alexander Zverev lead the Bjorn Borg group with one win each after Zverev beat Ben Shelton on Sunday. The top two finishers in each group advance to the semifinals. Fritz beats weary Musetti Earlier, Taylor Fritz beat late entry Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4. Unlike Musetti, who was making his debut, Fritz has pedigree in the tournament after reaching the final last year and the semifinals on debut in 2022. He'd also spent the past week preparing on the indoor court. “A very important one to win I would say if I want to make it out of the group,” Fritz said. “He plays quite different with the slices and everything. So it took me some time to get used to it. “I was able to avoid getting broken early in the match when he had some chances. Then I feel like I kind of got into the match more. … I thought I played really well." Musetti was a late replacement for Djokovic, who withdrew with an injured shoulder after beating the Italian in the Athens final on Saturday. Musetti arrived in Turin only on Sunday but couldn't ride his hometown crowd's support. “I couldn’t be at 100% in shape, especially physically,” Musetti said. “Mentally, I’m really glad that I’m here. I’m super proud of myself, of my team, of what we achieved. Today, I tried to fight with what I had." Fritz and Alcaraz lead the Jimmy Connors group with one win each, while De Minaur and Musetti trail with one loss each. On Tuesday, Fritz plays Alcaraz and Musetti plays Alex de Minaur.

Cruz Hewitt celebrates ATP Challenger main-draw debut with victory over world No.192 James McCabe

Cruz Hewitt has marked his main-draw debut on the second-tier ATP Challenger circuit with a dominant first win over a top-200 opponent. Received a wildcard into the Brisbane event, the 16-year-old son of tennis great Lleyton wasted no time justifying the faith inside Pat Rafter Arena on Tuesday. Hewitt made light work of fellow Aussie — and world No.192 — James McCabe for a 6-2 6-1 victory in just 80 minutes. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Hewitt faced just one break point in a strong performance on both ends of the court, making McCabe pay for his wayward service. The son of a gun has had mixed results in recent months but reached a semi-final in a third-tier ITF event in Brisbane late last month. McCabe, the fifth seed, arrived in Queensland on the back of reaching an ATP Challenger semi-final in Taipei last week. Hewitt’s win will lift him to a new career-high ranking from 818th to near 750th in the world. But more pressingly it sends him into a winnable second-round clash with world No.518 Wu Tung-Lin or world No.320 Christian Langmo. The Brisbane Challenger features a host of familiar faces. Bernard Tomic has already dispatched Li Tu in a 6-4 7-5 win for a spot in the second round. He could meet Dane Sweeny in the third round. James Duckworth and Rinky Hijikata are the top seeds, with Jason Kubler, Alex Bolt, Marc Polmans also in the draw.

AI agents open door to new hacking threats

Cybersecurity experts are warning that artificial intelligence agents, widely considered the next frontier in the generative AI revolution, could wind up getting hijacked and doing the dirty work for hackers. AI agents are programs that use artificial intelligence chatbots to do the work humans do online, like buy a plane ticket or add events to a calendar. But the ability to order around AI agents with plain language makes it possible for even the technically non-proficient to do mischief. "We're entering an era where cybersecurity is no longer about protecting users from bad actors with a highly technical skillset," AI startup Perplexity said in a blog post. "For the first time in decades, we're seeing new and novel attack vectors that can come from anywhere." These so-called injection attacks are not new in the hacker world, but previously required cleverly written and concealed computer code to cause damage. But as AI tools evolved from just generating text, images or video to being "agents" that can independently scour the internet, the potential for them to be commandeered by prompts slipped in by hackers has grown. "People need to understand there are specific dangers using AI in the security sense," said software engineer Marti Jorda Roca at NeuralTrust, which specializes in large language model security. Meta calls this query injection threat a "vulnerability." OpenAI chief information security officer Dane Stuckey has referred to it as "an unresolved security issue." Both companies are pouring billions of dollars into AI, the use of which is ramping up rapidly along with its capabilities. - AI 'off track' - Query injection can in some cases take place in real time when a user prompt -- "book me a hotel reservation" -- is gerrymandered by a hostile actor into something else -- "wire $100 to this account." But these nefarious prompts can also be hiding out on the internet as AI agents built into browsers encounter online data of dubious quality or origin, and potentially booby-trapped with hidden commands from hackers. Eli Smadja of Israeli cybersecurity firm Check Point sees query injection as the "number one security problem" for large language models that power AI agents and assistants that are fast emerging from the ChatGPT revolution. Major rivals in the AI industry have installed defenses and published recommendations to thwart such cyberattacks. Microsoft has integrated a tool to detect malicious commands based on factors including where instructions for AI agents originate. OpenAI alerts users when agents doing their bidding visit sensitive websites and blocks proceeding until the software is supervised in real time by the human user. Some security professionals suggest requiring AI agents to get user approval before performing any important task - like exporting data or accessing bank accounts. "One huge mistake that I see happening a lot is to give the same AI agent all the power to do everything," Smadja told AFP. In the eyes of cybersecurity researcher Johann Rehberger, known in the industry as "wunderwuzzi," the biggest challenge is that attacks are rapidly improving. "They only get better," Rehberger said of hacker tactics. Part of the challenge, according to the researcher, is striking a balance between security and ease of use since people want the convenience of AI doing things for them without constant checks and monitoring. Rehberger argues that AI agents are not mature enough to be trusted yet with important missions or data. "I don't think we are in a position where you can have an agentic AI go off for a long time and safely do a certain task," the researcher said.

Consumer protection gets more teeth Published: 11 November 2025 The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Securities Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe (SecZim), in a move expected to enhance consumer protection within the financial services sector. The agreement, signed last week, sets out a framework to safeguard consumer rights in financial markets, promote transparency, and ensure fair treatment of investors and consumers.Speaking at the signing ceremony, CPC chief executive officer Zororo Muranda said the collaboration would bolster oversight and improve consumer confidence in the financial system."As the CPC, our mandate is to protect consumers of goods and services, and financial services are one of the most important areas in any economy. This is why we paid a lot of attention to the Securities Exchange Commission," Muranda said."The Securities Exchange Commission deals with shares and securities of different forms, which move significant funds in and out of the country. It is therefore crucial that consumers are protected in this space."Muranda added that the MoU would facilitate closer cooperation between the two regulatory bodies in addressing consumer complaints, sharing information on financial products, and conducting public education campaigns to raise awareness of consumer rights. He noted that while SecZim's mandate focuses on regulating Zimbabwe's capital markets to ensure transparency, accountability, and investor protection, CPC's wider role is to ensure consumers across all sectors receive fair treatment and accurate information."Just as SecZim ensures investors are treated fairly and provided with truthful, clear and adequate information, CPC's role is to make sure consumers across all sectors are afforded the same level of protection," Muranda said.SecZim acting chief executive Grace Berejena welcomed the partnership, describing it as a proactive step towards protecting investors and preventing market abuses."This partnership is about proactively addressing potential violations of consumer rights within our capital markets. By collaborating with CPC, we aim to combat any such issues that may arise in the future," she said. The MoU underscores the growing recognition of consumer protection as a key pillar of financial stability and investor confidence in Zimbabwe's financial markets. - Newsday Tags: Consumer, You might also want to read this Zimbabwean consumer sector poised for improvement Zim consumer goods imports plunge Consumer spending continues growing Consumer credit driving consumer expenditure
