India News | IIT Guwahati Researchers Develop Novel Material to Detect Fuel Adulteration and Clean Oil Spills

Guwahati (Assam) [India], November 10 (ANI): Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati researchers have developed novel material that can detect adulteration or contamination of kerosene in petrol. The same material also holds the potential to selectively absorb oil from water and solidify it. Also Read | Delhi Blast: 8 Dead, 7 Injured After Car Explodes Near Gate 1 of Red Fort Metro Station; Investigation Underway (Watch Videos). According to a press statement, the IIT Guwahati authority said that the findings of the research have been published in the prestigious journal, Chemical Engineering, in a paper co-authored by Prof. Gopal Das, Professor, Department of Chemistry, along with his research scholars, Rubi Moral, and Oiyao Appun Pegu, at IIT Guwahati. Oil spills in oceans are among the most damaging environmental disasters in the world and lead to the loss of marine life, coastlines, and livelihoods that depend on them. According to the Oil Tanker Spill Statistics 2024, in the year 2024, 10,000 tons oil spilt into the oceans and seas globally. Also Read | School Assembly News Headlines Today, 11 November 2025: Check and Read Important National, International, Sports, Entertainment and Business Stories During Daily Assembly. "Oil spreads quickly and widely on water, making cleaning a challenging task. To address this, chemical absorbents, or other steps, which includes burning the oil, often lead to secondary pollution. To address this challenge, the IIT Guwahati research team has developed a Phase-Selective Organogelator (PSOG) molecule, a special class of safe materials. The PSOG was rationally designed to undergo a hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly process, which ultimately leads to oil gelation. It can trap oils such as kerosene and diesel through a self-assembly process, similar to how soap molecules organise themselves in water. Once they trap the oil, they form semi-solid gels that can be easily removed without disturbing the water below," said in the press statement. Speaking about the developed materials, Prof. Gopal Das, Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT Guwahati, said, "Our developed PSOG possesses a unique ability to selectively form gel only in presence of some specific oil samples, namely kerosene, and diesel among vast range of studied organic solvents as well as oil samples. Moreover, such highly selective PSOG might also be useful in targeting some specific oil samples from a complex mixture of different oil samples, and recovery of the same from different water bodies. So, this work might give a new direction in the future developments of PSOGs for water remediation as well as detection of different fuel adulteration." Another potential use of the developed organogel is to detect the adulteration of Kerosene. In India, especially among low-income groups, Kerosene is sometimes adulterated with petrol to reduce the running cost of automobiles or household cooking. This is a dangerous combination as the adulterated fuel is highly flammable and has caused multiple Kerosene stove explosion accidents in the country. "As the next step, the research team aims to advance the research towards detecting various types of fuel adulteration. Additionally, the team is also working on enhancing the efficiency of the detection process by refining the design and functionality of the gelator molecule," said in the press release. Sourav Ganguly Bats for Mohammed Shami After Pacer’s Non-Selection for IND vs SA 2025 Tests: ‘Don’t See Any Reason Why Shami Can’t Keep Playing for India’ (Watch Video)

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], November 10: Former captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly doesn't see any reason why veteran speedster Mohammed Shami should not represent India across all formats in the international circuit. Shami, 35, was left out of India's 15-member squad for the two home Tests against South Africa, scheduled to commence on Friday at the famed Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Before his most recent snub, Shami had openly expressed his disappointment about being sidelined from India's recent Test fixtures. Mohammed Shami’s Five-For Powers Bengal to Second Straight Win Against Gujarat in Ranji Trophy 2025–26. The reason behind Shami's absence was pinned to his lack of fitness. The seasoned quick made a case for his return with a sizzling performance for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy against Gujarat. Shami returned with figures of 5/38 in the second innings at Eden Gardens, his 13th five-wicket haul for Bengal and inspired his side to a commanding 144-run victory. With 15 wickets at 10.46 after four innings, Shami knocked on the selectors' door. However, Shami was left out once again, which indicated management's intention to move on from him. Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Ganguly advocated for Shami's return to international cricket for the first time since India's victorious title-winning run in the Champions Trophy in March. According to Ganguly, Shami is completely fit and remains an asset with his "enormous skill". We saw in the three Ranji Trophy matches where he's won Bengal on his own. I'm sure the selectors are watching. I'm sure there is communication between Shami and the selectors. If you ask me in terms of fitness and skill, it's Mohammed Shami we know of. I really don't see any reason why he can't keep playing Test matches, One-Day cricket, and T20 cricket for India because that skill is enormous," Ganguly said while speaking during an event on Monday. During India's squad announcement for the home Test against the West Indies last month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar spoke about Shami's availability and stated that he had not played enough cricket. In response, Shami hit back at the selection committee, declaring that informing the selectors about his business wasn't his job. Later, Agarkar stood firm and stated that Shami wasn't selected for the recently concluded ODI series in Australia due to fitness concerns. Supreme Court Takes Up Trump-Backed Question On Late-Arriving Mail Ballots

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to decide whether states can continue to count late-arriving mail ballots, which have been a target of President Donald Trump. The justices took up an appeal from Mississippi after a panel of three judges nominated by the Republican president on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last year that the state law allowing ballots that arrive shortly after Election Day to be counted violated federal law. Mississippi is among 18 states and the District of Columbia that accept mailed ballots received after Election Day as long as the ballots are postmarked on or before that date, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. An additional 14 states allow the counting of late-arriving ballots from some eligible voters, including overseas U.S. service members and their families, according to a filing from Democratic-led states that urged the justices to reverse the appellate ruling. The case will be argued in the late winter or early spring. A final ruling almost certainly will come by late June, early enough to govern the counting of ballots in the 2026 midterm congressional elections. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, a Republican, told the Supreme Court that the appellate ruling “will have destabilizing nationwide ramifications” if left in place. “The stakes are high: ballots cast by — but received after — election day can swing close races and change the course of the country,” Fitch wrote. Trump has claimed that late-arriving ballots and drawn-out electoral counts undermine confidence in elections. In March, the Republican president signed an executive order on elections that aims to require votes to be “cast and received” by Election Day. The order has been challenged in court. The Republican National Committee and the Libertarian Party of Mississippi led the challenge to the Mississippi law. A federal judge dismissed a similar challenge to Nevada’s law, but the decision has been appealed. The Supreme Court is separately considering reviving a lawsuit filed by Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., and backed by the Trump administration that challenges Illinois’ ballot receipt law. The issue is whether the congressman has the legal right to sue. Some Republican-led states, including Kansas and North Dakota, have taken steps to stop counting late-arriving ballots. In Ohio, Republican lawmakers are advancing legislation that would require ballots to be received by Election Day, closing the window for mailed ballots. The measure has passed the state Senate. In the Mississippi case, Judge Andrew Oldham wrote for the appellate panel that Congress established a “singular” Election Day for members of Congress and presidential electors, “by which ballots must be both cast by voters and received by state officials.” Judges James Ho and Stuart Kyle Duncan joined Oldham’s opinion invalidating the Mississippi law. The ruling reversed a decision by U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr., who had held that there was no conflict between the state and federal laws. “All that occurs after election day is the delivery and counting of ballots cast on or before election day,” wrote Guirola, who was nominated by President George W. Bush, a Republican. An earlier version of this story incorrectly listed Colorado and Utah as among the states accepting late-arriving ballots by mail. That sentence has been deleted.

World News | Yunus, Pakistan Aim to Turn Bangladesh into ISI's Vassal State, Alleges Ex-Hasina Aide

By Vishu Adhana New Delhi [India], November 10 (ANI): Alleging that Pakistan used Bangladesh as a terror transit point against India between 2001 and 2006, former Bangladesh Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury on Monday claimed that the current objective, following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina government, is to turn Bangladesh into a "vassal state" of Pakistan's spy agency, the ISI. Also Read | Did a Muslim Migrant Urinate on Pork in a French Supermarket? Fact Check Reveals It Was a Prank Video. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Chowdhury accused the Yunus government of "cosying up" to extremist elements of Pakistan -- the ISI, the military, the Punjabi elite. Chowdhury is a former aide to Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Organising Secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League. Also Read | Indians Kidnapped in Mali: 5 Indian Nationals Abducted in Bamako As Al Qaeda-Linked Terrorist Group Close In on Capital, Embassy Working for Safe Release. He was forced to leave the country last year following the coup that ousted Sheikh Hasina's government. The takeover paved the way for Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to assume charge. When asked about Pakistan and Bangladesh's growing ties, Chowdhury lambasted the "freedom democracy-minded, human-rights-selling" Yunus for his silence on Imran Khan, the former Pakistan PM who is detained by this criminal intelligence service, and on the situation of Balochistan. "They don't want to say anything about them, because they only want to cosy up to the extremist elements of Pakistan -- the ISI, the military, the Punjabi elite of Pakistan -- who have been exploiting that country for the last seventy-five years. This is not about principles, values, or friendship. It is about turning Bangladesh into a vassal state," he said. Chowdhury recalled that when the Awami League started the process of bringing the perpetrators of genocide to accountability and justice, Pakistan vehemently protested and started their ISIS activities within the country. "When the BNP and Jamaat were ruling the country from 2001 to 2006, they used Bangladesh as a transit point to export arms, weaponry, and terrorism into India," Chowdhury said, indiciating there is a repeat of this is happening now. In recent months, Pakistan has been seen making concerted efforts to rebuild and expand its ties with Bangladesh, particularly after the change of regime in Dhaka. Islamabad has stepped up diplomatic outreach and engagement, seeking to regain its foothold in a country it once ruled before 1971. Many senior Pakistani officials have visited Bangladesh, including Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who held talks with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in August, and senior military officials such as Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf. Chowdhury also noted that Bangladesh is not a country where Pakistan is warmly received, and there is not much sympathy for Pakistan. "Yet, out of nowhere, suddenly, there is increased military cooperation. I mean, we know what the Pakistan military is all about -- it's just a front for the ISI. Most of the Pakistani military officers serve in the Inter-Services Intelligence, which is their main military intelligence service responsible for exporting terrorism abroad," he mentioned. "And such an organisation is now being allowed to open desks in Bangladesh. During our government's time, Pakistan did not send their ISI officials anymore, because their cover would be exposed. And now they are opening up their desks here -- for what reason? The sole purpose is to turn Bangladesh into a vassal state of the ISI," he added.
