Argentina: Espert steps down as chairman of Lower House's Budget Committee

Argentina: Espert steps down as chairman of Lower House's Budget Committee Congressman José Luis Espert has resigned as chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee in Argentina's Lower House, just hours after withdrawing his reelection candidacy amid a scandal linking him to a drug trafficker wanted in the State of Texas. His bid had further tarnished the already dire situation that President Javier Milei's La Libertad Avanza (LLA) is going through. “I am writing to inform you of my resignation from the Budget and Finance Committee of this Honorable House. Sincerely,” Espert wrote to House Speaker Martín Menem. By stepping down from the committee's top spot, Espert preempted a certain scandal next Wednesday, as multiple opposition blocks had planned to formally demand his removal when the 2026 Budget needs to be ruled upon before Nov. 20. Milei proposed Congressman (and drummer) Bertie Benegas Lynch as a likely replacement. Until the situation is resolved, the committee will be temporarily led by Vice Chairman Carlos Heller of the opposition Unión por la Patria. Espert's move also resulted in efforts to expel him from Congress altogether losing momentum, since his term expires on Dec. 9. Although he remains a sitting lawmaker for the time being, he is expected to remain away from the spotlight ahead of the Oct. 26 midterm elections, not to further damage the ruling party's image. However, not all Deputies agree on letting Espert off the hook. Facundo Manes and Victoria Tolosa Paz -for instance- have been reported to remain interested in his dismissal. Other press reports in Buenos Aires mentioned Espert as a likely replacement for Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, who is running for the Senate and would leave her post starting Dec. 10.

Relatives of jailed ‘Bull’ Amos among Linstead massacre victims

At least two of the victims in Sunday night's mass shooting in Commodore, Linstead, St Catherine, are relatives of incarcerated Glendon 'Bull' Amos. Police describe Amos as a well known 'gang-banger' from that area. Amos, a former most wanted, was apprehended during a joint intelligence-led operation conducted by the Joint Anti-Gang Task Force (JAGTF), supported by Specialized Operations and the St Catherine North police, in Moneague, St Ann on January 29, 2025. Before his capture, Amos was listed among Jamaica's top 10 most wanted and was regularly featured on the JCF's Wanted Wednesdays for more than a year. He has since been charged with multiple counts of murder, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and using a firearm to commit a felony. Police believe that Sunday's deadly attack was gang-related and may have been a reprisal for a killing that occurred years ago. Amos is said to be related to 22-year-old security guard Famous Amos, one of the five people killed, and to a 54-year-old shopkeeper who was shot and injured during the assault. "The killers were deliberate yuh hear and were going for them and anybody else around them," a resident told The STAR. According to reports, around 9 p.m., five heavily armed men wearing police vests opened fire indiscriminately on a group of people gathered at the location. The deceased have been identified as Shannon Gordon, 4, of Orange Park, Charliemount, Linstead, Mario Sullivan, 42, Jushane Edwards, 19, Iysha Washington, 39, vendor, all of Rosemount District, Linstead and Famous Amos, 22, security guard of Commodore District. Four others, including the shopkeeper, are nursing gunshot wounds. It was confirmed that the premises where the incident took place is well known to law enforcement, as several operations have been carried out there in the past. In response, the police have imposed a 48-hour curfew in three Linstead communities. The curfew began at 6 p.m. Monday and will continue until 6 p.m. Wednesday. During a visit to the community on Monday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Police Commissioner Dr Kevin Blake met with residents and law enforcement officials. Dr Blake confirmed that the attack was gang-related, and although he did not name the suspect, he acknowledged that a key gangster from the area is currently in custody. The Government has offered a $2 million reward for information leading to the arrest and charge of the killers. - Andre Williams We want to hear from you! Fatty liver disease risk linked to both sugary and diet drinks

People could be at higher risk of fatty liver disease from both sugary sodas and diet drinks, a new study says. In fact, artificially sweetened drinks might pose a greater threat to liver health than sugary beverages, researchers reported Monday at the United European Gastroenterology's annual meeting in Berlin. The team also found that replacing these drinks with water significantly reduced people's risk of fatty liver disease. "Sugar-sweetened beverages have long been under scrutiny, while their 'diet' alternatives are often seen as the healthier choice," lead researcher Lihe Liu said in a news release. She's a graduate student in gastroenterology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University in Suzhou, China. "These findings challenge the common perception that these drinks are harmless and highlight the need to reconsider their role in diet and liver health," Liu added. Fatty liver disease occurs when fat accumulates in the liver, which over time can cause liver damage. It's the most common chronic liver disease, researchers said, affecting more than 30% of people worldwide. For the study, researchers followed nearly 124,000 people participating in the U.K. Biobank, a long-term health study in the United Kingdom. The participants reported their beverage consumption as part of a 24-hour diet questionnaire. During a median 10-year follow-up, nearly 1,200 participants developed fatty liver disease and 108 died from liver-related causes, researchers found. Results show that drinking about nine or more ounces of artificially sweetened beverages every day was associated with a 60% increased risk of fatty liver disease. Likewise, drinking sugary beverages daily was associated with a 50% increased risk, researchers said. "Our study shows that low- or non-sugar-sweetened beverages were actually linked to a higher risk of (fatty liver disease), even at modest intake levels such as a single can per day," Liu said. Drinking water instead of an artificially sweetened beverage lowered a person's fatty liver disease risk by more than 15%. Likewise, replacing sugary beverages with water reduced people's risk by nearly 13%. Liu said the high sugar content in sugary drinks can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, promote weight gain and increase levels of uric acid -- all of which have been linked to the accumulation of excess fat in the liver. On the other hand, artificially sweetened beverages might affect liver health by altering a person's gut microbiome, driving cravings for sweets and stimulating insulin secretion, Liu said. "The safest approach is to limit both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened drinks," she said. "Water remains the best choice as it removes the metabolic burden and prevents fat accumulation in the liver, whilst hydrating the body." Researchers next plan to examine exactly why these drinks increase liver fat accumulation through long-term clinical trials. Findings presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. More information Yale New Haven Health has more on fatty liver disease.
