Are LSU Fans "Toxic" For Wanting Brian Kelly Fired?

When LSU hired Brian Kelly in December 2021, it sent shockwaves through the college football world. Sure, a lot of people deemed it a disaster from a culture-fit perspective, but they'd be lying if they said they didn't think he would be massively successful there at the time. Kelly was fresh off a five-year stretch where his Notre Dame Fighting Irish won ten or more games every year and never finished outside the top 12. If he could do it in a place like South Bend, where tough academic standards and distance from recruiting hot beds make talent acquisition harder than it needs to be, then surely he could win at LSU. The recruiting practically takes care of itself in Baton Rouge, so much so that even the notoriously prickly Kelly was able to reel in multiple top-10 classes. However, after Saturday's blowout loss to Texas A&M at home — a place where the Tigers are nigh unbeatable after sunset — it looks like the Brian Kelly experiment is going down the drain. Don't believe me? Just ask the fans. This begs the question: are these LSU fans "toxic" for wanting their head coach fired? After all, Kelly is 34-14 in three and a half years on the bayou, and has an SEC West Division banner and a Heisman winner to his name. Shouldn't these fans show some patience? Absolutely not! But why isn't anyone else asking these questions when Florida Gators fans were just put through the ringer all this past week for the same thing? Kelly and former Florida coach Billy Napier were hired during the same cycle, and Napier has a far worse record (22-23) than his contemporary to the west. Kelly even owns a 3-1 head-to-head record against Napier. Yet the media calls Florida fans "spoiled" and "toxic" for wanting to get rid of their impotent head coach while they remain silent as the LSU fans call for the head of a far more successful man. And here's the kicker: both fan bases are correct. The standard at schools like Florida and LSU is to compete for and win championships. Billy Napier showed he wasn't the guy to be able to do that at Florida, and now Kelly is showing much of the same at LSU. This season was supposed to be the year everything aligned perfectly for Kelly to make a deep run with the Tigers, and it's looking like that won't be happening. Programs like LSU and Florida shouldn't need "windows." Every year should be a "championship year" with the right coach. So, no. Neither the Gators nor the Tigers are a toxic fanbase for demanding excellence from their football coaches and programs. To suggest anything less displays a gross misunderstanding of both fanbases and their expectations. SEC football isn't for everyone, and it's starting to become abundantly clear who's who in that regard.

For that to happen, it’s really cool.” Per ESPN, Ole Miss flipped the script this time, outscoring Oklahoma 9-0 in the fourth quarter, holding the Sooners to 84 yards over the final 15 minutes, and forcing quarterback John Mateer into 10 incompletions on his last 15 throws, including a last-gasp heave that fell short of the end zone. The win delivered a milestone for Kiffin’s tenure: Ole Miss’s first road victory over a ranked SEC opponent under his watch. According to ESPN Research, the Rebels are also 6-0 following a loss since the start of the 2023 season, exactly the kind of resilience Kiffin referenced. A week after being blanked late in Athens, Ole Miss answered with complementary football, leaning on a defense that closed the door and an offense that managed the game in winning time. Kiffin also acknowledged the emotional carryover from Georgia. He said the sideline felt that “here we go” moment as the crowd surged and the opponent punched back, but this time the Rebels didn’t “freak out.” They steadied themselves, communicated, and finished. The off-field noise isn’t going away, either. Per ESPN’s Molly McGrath, Kiffin told her he planned to address ongoing Florida coaching rumors directly with his team, framing the speculation as a compliment to the program and a necessary conversation for a roster with many newcomers. He emphasized that decisions are about everyday happiness, not money. Jaguars rumors: Brian Thomas Jr. trade calls aren’t resulting in an immediate hang-up

We’re seven games into the 2025 NFL season, and no one knows anything about the Jacksonville Jaguars so far. They’ve had some impressive performances, yes, but they’ve also played head-scratching football in that stretch. One of the biggest reasons for the confusion around the Jaguars is their shaky offensive production. One of the biggest reasons behind the Jaguars’ inconsistency on offense is Brian Thomas Jr’s regression. After an excellent final stretch of games in 2024, many expected the second-year wideout to take a big leap this season. However, Thomas has struggled in spurts this season and has dealt with injuries as well. He’s had problems catching the ball, sporting one of the worst drop rates in the league. Thomas Jr is still in his second year, so there’s room to believe that the Jaguars wide receiver will still improve over the course of his career. Still, that has apparently not stopped Jacksonville from exploring its options at the upcoming trade deadline. Dianna Russini said in her report for The Athletic that “The Jaguars are listening on calls for WR Brian Thomas Jr., even if a move feels highly unlikely.” Drafted in the first round by the Jaguars in 2024, Brian Thomas Jr was one of the biggest standouts last season for the team. He had 1,282 receiving yards last season and ten touchdowns, planting himself firmly in Offensive Rookie of the Year talks last season. Thomas Jr was hyped up to be one of the best young wide receivers in the league. A breakout 2025 campaign seemed all but guaranteed. However, Thomas Jr has not played up to his potential this season. He currently has the most drops in the NFL (nine drops according to Pro Football Reference) and has the second-highest drop rate in the league at 16.4%. His struggles catching the ball in the middle of the field has hindered the Jaguars’ offense greatly this season. The Jaguars’ offensive struggles aren’t solely on Thomas Jr: Trevor Lawrence’s accuracy has not been good as well. Still, when your supposed number one receiver is struggling this badly, it puts significant strain on the offense. The Jaguars are on a bye week this week.

The child abuse inquiry was meant to move the dial. Three years on, nothing has changed

Russell Specterman broke down in tears and hung up the phone when his sister called to tell him that there was going to be an independent inquiry into child sex abuse. “I just broke down,” he tells The Independent. “I knew the pain and trauma that it would bring up in me.” Mr Specterman, 59, had grown up in the care of Lambeth, the council which became a core case study in the Independent Inquiry (IICSA). Findings would later detail the council’s institutional failings as it “retained in its employment adults who posed a risk to children” and “failed to investigate its employees when they were suspected of child sexual abuse”. It’s been more than a decade since IICSA was first announced after posthumous investigations into the Jimmy Savile scandal revealed widespread child abuse. It cost a staggering £186.6 million and more than 7,000 survivors were involved in the inquiry over the course of the seven years it ran. Three different panel chairs were forced to resign before Professor Alexis Jay, already a panel member, took up the mantle in August 2016. Panel members were paid a day rate of £565 for their participation in the inquiry, according to financial reports. Dame Lowell Goddard, chair panel before Professor Jay, was paid an annual salary of £355,000 for the financial year 2015-2016. Monday was the third anniversary of when IICSA’s findings were published in a damning final report, shedding light on the institutional nature of child sex abuse in the country. The report was unhelpfully overshadowed at the time by the resignation of Liz Truss, 44 days after her premiership began, but 20 key recommendations were made in order to protect children. Three years on, none of the recommendations have been fully implemented and campaigners and survivors remain dissatisfied with the inertia. A further review by Baroness Louise Casey this year urged the government to act on the recommendations. ‘No justice’ Mr Specterman didn’t give live evidence, but he was a core participant and submitted a statement, something he found hard to do. “I struggled to put pen to paper at the best of times, but it was something that needed to be done,” he says. “I wanted to help the kids.” Years later, Mr Specterman has grown frustrated as nothing has been done. He feels there has been “no justice” and expressed concern that a lot of people involved got “fortunes out of it”. Looking back on the inquiry, Professor Jay tells The Independent that she recognised the limitations of the sort of justice it might bring. “A lot of people tend to think that they will gain justice from it, but if you take justice to mean criminal investigation and prosecution, a public inquiry can’t do that,” she says. “It can accurately describe what happened, and it can make recommendations for improvement in the future.” “I was never in any doubts about the limitations of a public inquiry, but people so desperately wanted to have a public inquiry,” she adds. “I was always clear about it, but you tend to think this is not a court of law, it’s a quasi-judicial process.” For Professor Julie MacFarlane, the fact that the recommendations have not been implemented is just further proof that there’s no political will for change. By the time the inquiry was in action, Prof MacFarlane, now 67, had moved to Canada and already come forward as a survivor of child sex abuse from the Anglican Church in Chichester. As a prestigious legal academic, she had sued the Church in 2015, the same year that the inquiry began, and the police went on to successfully prosecute the church minister who sexually assaulted her over the period of 15 months when she was a teenager. Already accustomed to speaking about her experience, she travelled from Canada to the United Kingdom in 2018, especially to give her testimony for the inquiry. “By then I’d had a certain amount of practice,” she says. “I wasn’t particularly afraid of telling that story; I was ready to tell it. It seemed important to tell it, especially when I realised that there was going to be a focus on Chichester and I was going to find out all of this stuff that I had no idea... It made sense that he [the minister] was doing this in a community where there was an incredible amount of tolerance for this behaviour.” The inquiry found that over 50 years, 20 individuals connected to Chichester Diocese were convicted or pleaded guilty to sexual offending against children. The diocese’s “neglect of the physical and spiritual well‐being of children and young people was in conflict with the Church’s mission of love and care”, according to the report. “I felt like it was my responsibility. It would be more straightforward for me to do the actual testifying than it might be for somebody doing it for the first time or someone who was unfamiliar with doing that kind of presentation,” she adds. “This could be helpful for other people to do this.” Prof Macfarlane remembers sitting in front of the panel and feeling “less than hopeful for what would come out of it” when she was questioned. “I wanted them to ask me more questions, and sometimes what I tried to do in my answers was go further than they necessarily asked in their question,” she recalls. “What I felt that they didn’t necessarily quite get is... the vulnerability of people, especially younger people... to the fact that the power of the church is a very hierarchical institution and if you’re a believer, then you believe this person is next to god in your life. “This was an accident waiting to happen when you put somebody who has God given authority in a situation in which there are younger people.” ‘A blueprint for change’ Prof Macfarlane doesn’t think the key recommendations go far enough. One core change that could help victims is taking the ability to investigate allegations of abuse out of the church’s brief. “What the recommendations do is they describe better processes, more training etc,” she explains, adding that one change, to broaden the category of person of trust to include clergy in the Sexual Offences Act would take 15 minutes. “Given how simple that is, and sometimes legislation is more complicated than that, [it’s clear] that there’s not a lot of real political will to do anything about this.” With an estimated 500,000 children sexually abused every year, with fewer than one in five ever disclosing their abuse, campaign group ACT on IICSA has continued to highlight how the government hasn’t acted on what it calls a “clear blueprint for change”. Professor Jay has warned that if the final 20 recommendations are not committed to and fully implemented within a timescale, the future for children is incredibly bleak. “In 10 years' time, people will be there saying the same things, and children will still be being sexually abused in the most appalling ways,” she says: “I am concerned about the growth internationally, and locally, of the use of the internet and where that takes online abuse. And it is serious, the speed with which that is changing and getting worse.” Lucy Duckworth, policy lead for the Survivor’s Trust, said: “The importance of Baroness Louise Casey’s report was that IICSA would be done and it’s really clear all the way throughout. “We absolutely need to be looking at the individual cases of child sexual abuse like grooming gangs, like abuse in boarding schools, like in cover-up of social workers' institutions. “There’s so many different places that it happens and each one comes with its own complexities and nuances and certainly cover-ups. “But for the moment, our main point is that all child sexual abuse needs to stop and we’re not at a place really where we’re even understanding how widespread this is. And that’s what IICSA was for.” Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips said: “Baroness Casey’s report revealed the unimaginable horrors that some of the most vulnerable people in this country went through, and how victims and survivors were failed. This will remain one of the darkest moments in our country’s history. “Earlier this year, I set out how we are taking action on the recommendations Alexis Jay made in her inquiry to root out failure wherever it occurs. This includes creating a mandatory duty to report child sexual abuse, establishing a new Child Protection Authority for England that will make our children’s safety a priority, and making it easier for victims and survivors to pursue claims in the civil courts. “But there is more to be done, which is why we are launching a new statutory inquiry into grooming gangs to direct and oversee local investigations. In parallel, policing has set up a new national operation, overseen by the National Crime Agency, which has already flagged more than 1,200 closed cases for review. Delhi Horror: 'Stalker' Throws Acid On 20-year-old DU Student In Ashok Vihar

Delhi: A 20-year-old woman sustained burn injuries after an alleged acid attack by her stalker and his friends near Laxmi Bai College in northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar area on Sunday, an official said. The incident occurred in the morning when the victim, a second-year student pursuing her studies at a private institution, was walking on the road for her weekend classes at Delhi University's Lakshmibai College. "She was intercepted by the accused and two of his associates on a motorcycle. The main accused has been identified as Jitender, a resident of Mukundpur, where the victim also resides. He was accompanied by Ishan and Arman," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh told PTI in a statement. According to the woman's statement, Ishan handed over a bottle to Arman, who then threw acid on her. She raised her hands to shield her face, resulting in injuries to both her hands. "The trio fled the spot immediately after the attack. The woman was rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, from where the police were informed," the statement added. Woman was being stalked for months According to officials, initial inquiries revealed that Jitender had been stalking the woman for several months. About a month ago, the two allegedly had a heated argument, after which the harassment intensified. Following the incident, a crime team and forensic experts visited the scene and collected evidence. A case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to acid attack, has been registered. "Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused. CCTV footage from the area is being examined and local intelligence is being developed," the officer said, adding that further investigation is in progress. The student is currently admitted to RML Hospital and kept under strict observation. Hospital officials said she sustained burns covering less than 5% of her body, mainly on her hands. India-China Direct Flights to Resume Tonight After 4-Year Gap - Check Schedule

Kolkata: Direct flights between India and China will finally resume today after being suspended for over four years. Resuming services, the first flight will take off from Kolkata to Guangzhou at 10 PM tonight. A direct flight between Shanghai and New Delhi will start on November 9 and operate three times a week, said Yu Jing Chen, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India. Direct flights were operational between the two countries until early 2020, before being suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The services then remained suspended due to the eastern Ladakh border row. Following recent diplomatic initiatives, private carrier IndiGo announced it will resume services to China, connecting Kolkata to Guangzhou with daily, non-stop flights starting October 26. "The first flight is scheduled to leave Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 10 PM today," the official said. IndiGo Among First Indian Carriers to Resume Direct Flights to China, Reveals Future Schedule IndiGo, earlier this month, had announced that it would be among the first airlines to restart services between the two countries following the COVID-19 suspension. In its October 2 press release, the airline said it would start daily, nonstop flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou from October 26, 2025, using Airbus A320neo aircraft. IndiGo also mentioned plans to expand the service by introducing direct flights between Delhi and Guangzhou, subject to regulatory approvals. These routes, the airline said, will help rebuild trade and tourism ties between India and China. Later, on October 11, IndiGo officially confirmed that daily direct flights between Delhi and Guangzhou would start from November 10, strengthening connectivity between the two countries. The resumption of direct flights was also confirmed earlier this month by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Flights between India and China had been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic and the Galwan Valley clash in June 2020, one of the deadliest border confrontations in decades. Since then, diplomatic and economic relations between New Delhi and Beijing have been tense. However, in October 2024, both sides reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), seen as a key step in easing tensions. Although dialogue had slowly resumed, direct commercial flights had remained grounded until now. With this development, both governments are signalling a move toward renewed engagement and cooperation, particularly in trade, business, and tourism. Earlier, a spokesperson from the Chinese Embassy also reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to development and improving ties, calling the resumption of flights an important milestone in strengthening people-to-people and economic links between India and China. China unveils ‘mini fridge’ AI server that uses 90% less power than other systems

Chinese scientists have unveiled what they say is the world’s first brain-like intelligent computer the size of a mini fridge, which has the capabilities of a room-sized supercomputer while using 90 per cent less power. The BI Explorer computing system, or BIE-1, was revealed by members of the Guangdong Institute of Intelligence Science and Technology (GDIIST) at a forum held in the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in southern China on Friday. The device packs the capabilities of a supercomputer – including training and inference speeds that rival traditional computing clusters – into a refrigerator-sized unit with the help of an intuitive neural network and brain-like artificial intelligence algorithm. “It can be easily deployed in homes, small offices and even mobile environments,” the institute said on its website on Friday. “It has low power consumption and low noise, and can be called a miniaturised supercomputer, making high-end intelligent computing capabilities within reach.” The device was jointly launched by Zhuhai Hengqin Neogenint Technology and Suiren (Zhuhai) Medical Technology, two companies incubated by GDIIST. Conventional supercomputers are typically large, energy-intensive systems that can take up an entire room within a data centre. These systems use a massive amount of power to not only run computing tasks but also to cool the systems. “A traditional computing centre is like a building, which requires a lot of investment in the early stages and has high energy consumption,” said Nie Lei, co-director of the joint laboratory of intelligent computing systems at GDIIST. “The [BIE-1] is only the size of a mini single-door refrigerator and can be run directly on a household socket, with power consumption of only one-tenth of traditional supercomputer equipment,” Nie told China Science Daily on Saturday. He added that the compact device would not only be suitable to be used on its own but would also provide a way to improve the energy efficiency of existing computing facilities. The BIE-1 integrates 1,152 central processing unit cores – or mini processors that execute instructions and perform calculations – with 4.8 terabytes of DDR5 memory and 204 terabytes of storage space. The device runs on an independently developed intuitive neural network, which closely mimics the brain’s computational mechanisms, allowing for efficient learning, interpretable reasoning, and the ability to learn and extract patterns from small amounts of data. The device can simultaneously process different types of information, including text, images and speech, allowing it to run model training and reasoning at high speed and efficiency, according to the institute. The training and inference speeds of the compact computer can reach 100,000 tokens per second and 500,000 tokens per second, respectively, which the institute said were comparable to traditional computing clusters that required multiple high-end graphics processing units. Even when performing the most complex inference tasks, the CPU temperature stays below 70 degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit) and operates quietly. According to the institute, the BIE-1 could be used in many different industries, such as home health monitoring, customised tutoring for children and personalised AI help in offices. The device could also offer non-professional users access to brain-inspired computing technology and allow for intelligent computing to become available in even more situations and environments.

Group 3 Saudi Derby a new gateway to Kentucky Derby

RIYADH - Runners in the Saudi Derby will now be eligible to collect points for the Kentucky Derby in an exciting new link announced by the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia (JCSA) and Churchill Downs Incorporated. The 1,600m Group 3 event on the Saudi Cup undercard has been added to a worldwide series of events known as "The Road to The Kentucky Derby". It will make it easier for Saudi Arabian owners to have runners in one of the most prestigious horse races in the world - attended annually by over 100,000 people. The US$1.5 million (S$1.95 million) Saudi Derby, which will be staged at King Abdulaziz racecourse in Riyadh on Feb 14, 2026, will have a maximum of 30 points available to the winner to try and qualify for the Group 1 Kentucky Derby (2,000m) at Churchill Downs on May 2. Two other races, the UAE 2000 Guineas and the Dubai Road to the Kentucky Derby Stakes (formerly the Al Bastakiya) at Meydan racecourse, have also been added as races with qualifying points for the European/Middle East Road to the Kentucky Derby. The series now consists of 10 races, and has up to two invitations for the Kentucky Derby, with further points issued behind the winner of each leg down to fifth place. First staged in 2020, the Saudi Derby has rapidly become a high-quality international race, with Japanese challenger Forever Young winning in 2024 before narrowly finishing third in a thrilling 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. His Royal Highness Prince Bandar bin Khalid Al Faisal, chairman of the JCSA, hailed the inclusion of the Saudi Derby as a pre-qualifier to the famous Run For The Roses as a significant milestone for Saudi racing. "The addition of the Saudi Derby on the European/Middle East Road to the Kentucky Derby is an important step forward for Saudi racing and offers local owners the chance of winning points for their horses to earn a run at Churchill Downs in May 2026," he said. "This announcement also marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership between The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and Churchill Downs Inc (CDI), which holds the promise of more collaboration in the future. "Thanks to the vision and wise leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister (may God protect them), Saudi Arabian racing has been in a position to make important advancements on the international stage since the inauguration of the Saudi Cup in 2020. Syafifie takes five for his best day

KUALA LUMPUR - Apprentice jockey Syafifie Zailuddin was on fire at Sungai Besi on Oct 25, when he booted home a career-best haul of five winners. The bonanza brings the Ipoh-based jockey's tally to 18 for the season, 11 adrift of leading apprentice Jerlyn Seow on 29 wins. "I was confident of riding two winners today but five was totally unexpected. Still I am grateful for the results," said Syafifie, who is indentured to Kevin Coetzee. "I shall strive to improve my riding and win more races." Adding even greater merit to his prolific day was the fact that the first three of them were all big-priced winners, including Hasten ($136) who inflicted the first defeat on the hitherto unbeaten Fright in the Class 3 sprint over 1,020m. Both horses were up in class, with Fright following up his double in Class 4 with a runaway win in a Max Two race earlier in October. He was backed down to odds-on favouritism to extend his run. Hasten also had an easy win in Class 4 on Oct 12 - his third win in 12 starts in Malaysia, after crossing over from Singapore (when trained by Steven Burridge) with two victories at Kranji. But, despite his decent record, the son of Hellbent was unfancied in a market dominated by Fright. The Simon Dunderdale-trained Brazen Beau four-year-old, however, gave some ominous signs his charmed run could be threatened. Normally a brilliant beginner, Fright began only moderately even if he quickly made his way to the front under his regular partner Khaw Choon Kit. Stop The Water (Shazmin Sudin) joined him at the 800m and they led from Billy Elliot (Andre da Silva), Hasten, Bintang Sixty-One (Mohd Zaki) and Dancing Light (Nuqman Rozi). Stop The Water headed Fright momentarily soon after, but Fright quickly regained control and led into the straight clear of Stop The Water. Billy Elliot was next followed by Hasten, who was nicely tucked on the rails. Fright pulled away to lead by two lengths from Billy Elliot at the 200m with Hasten looking for a run on the rails. Stop The Water came under pressure soon after entering the straight. Billy Elliot closed the gap to half-a-length from Fright at the 100m. But, on the rails, Hasten was just starting to quicken and soon it was three in a line. In the tussle to the post, Hasten finished best to win by half-a-length from Fright with a similar distance to Billy Elliot. "The boy (Zyafifie) rode a nice race," said trainer Richard Lines. "The horse is obviously in good form after his last-start win and we gave him a chance with the light weight (53kg compared with Fright's 59kg)." Asked if he thought the horse could go up to a higher class, Lines said: "Winning form is good form and we will take it one race at a time." Syafifie said he just had to keep the five-year-old together while in transit. "He (Hasten) jumped well but could not match the early pace of the other horses," said Syafifie. "So I saved him up for a challenge in the straight." The 26-year-old jockey, who has now reached a career tally of 50, first struck on Singha Bay ($123) for trainer Wayne Lim in the Class 4B sprint over 1,150m. Following his win on Hasten, he teamed up with Lines again to produce another upset win on Kim Emperor ($108).
