Sundimi i ligjit/ Si rënditen vendet e Ballkanit

/Alsat.mk

Mikel Arteta admits he didn’t expect Martin Zubimendi to adapt this quickly at Arsenal

“I’ve seen many midfielders reach the Premier League, coming from top positions in other leagues, and they’ve struggled; it’s taken them a year or two to become who they are. The speed and naturalness with which he’s adapting is surprising.” Zubimendi might not have great height, but he doesn’t struggle in the air. In fact, his aerial duel numbers are up there with some of the best defenders in the league, including Virgil van Dijk. This view is shared by more than just his current teammates. Even before joining Arsenal, Zubimendi had a reputation for being an excellent player. Kieran Tierney and Xavi praise Martin Zubimendi Ex-Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney, who had a short stint alongside Zubimendi at Sociedad, ranked him and Mikel Merino as ‘world class’. He said: “You have world-class players like Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, Brais Mendez. It’s not that people don’t think they’re good, it’s just that if you’re only watching the Premier League every week, it’s hard to know. They’re world-class.” Xavi also spoke highly of the midfielder during his time in Spain, pointing to how well he fit into Barcelona’s system even before making the move to England. He said: “I like all of Real Sociedad. They mirror a bit our style of play. Zubimendi is an extraordinary defensive midfielder, he understands the model we like at Barca, he dominates with and without the ball.”

2025 MLB Season Recap: Boston Red Sox

The 26-year-old was a standout on what was a very good overall pitching staff. The Red Sox’s rotation was short-handed at times this season, thanks to injuries. However, Boston’s rotation had a “big three” of formidable starters: Crochet, Brayan Bello, and Lucas Giolito. The 26-year-old Bello had arguably the best season of his career. Bello set a career-best mark for opposing wOBA (.297), significantly limiting well-hit contact and working hitters inside with a sinker. But on top of that. Bello continued to mix up and down, either with the changeup and the four-seamer, to keep hitters off balance. Bello weaned himself off the four-seamer early on in 2024 to focus on three pitches, which didn’t work. This year, Bello was more of a complete pitcher, working with that four-seamer again. He also used a new cutter for the first time in his MLB career. Giolito, meanwhile, returned to an MLB mound for the first time since 2023. The right-hander signed a two-year deal in the winter of 2023, important since Giolito was going to miss all of 2024 due to injury. The 31-year-old Giolito had trouble with walks in 2025. However, his numbers weren’t too bad overall. After a couple of bad starts early on in the year, Giolito took off in June; from June 10 onward, the 31-year-old posted a 2.51 ERA (3.97 FIP) with 94 strikeouts over 111 frames. Boston’s bullpen, meanwhile, was one of the best in the game this past season. The Red Sox seamlessly replaced Kenley Jansen with Aroldis Chapman, who will return to Boston in 2026 after he signed an in-season extension. Chapman struck out 85 over 61 frames, notched 32 saves, and earned an All-Star nod. The veteran lefty also came up large in the playoffs, as he put out a big fire in Game 1 of the Wild Card round to secure Boston’s lone postseason victory. That bullpen was formidable, not just because of Chapman, but also because of how many different looks Alex Cora could give teams. Greg Weissert and Garrett Whitlock, both effective relievers, got things done in different ways. The same can be said for lefties Justin Wilson and Brennan Bernardino. Moving on to the offense, it ranked in the top half of the Majors in several categories. It helped that Boston received a resurgent season from Trevor Story, who had easily his best season as a Sox in 2025. Story hit 25 home runs, stole 31 bases, and looked exactly like the right-handed power hitter the organization wanted to see when he left Colorado. Speaking of right-handed hitters, Alex Bregman (.356 wOBA) excelled in Boston. Bregman hit 18 home runs and 46 extra-base hits across 114 games, an injury-shortened campaign. The 31-year-old, on paper, looked to be a good fit in New England thanks to his pull-heavy tendencies and good range at third. However, his 2025 season also brings questions about Bregman’s future. More specifically, where he will play in 2026. Sticking with the offense, the Sox had seven players in double-digits in terms of home runs. However, not everything was rosy for Boston’s lineup. There was significant national attention on the Sox this season. It wasn’t just because Boston had a loud offseason. It also had to do with the “big three” prospects in the system: Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer. All three made their Major League debuts in 2025, and each had varying results. Anthony, arguably the best of the three, had the best rookie season. The 21-year-old Anthony slashed .292/.396/.463 with eight home runs across 303 plate appearances. However, most of his damage came within a six-week period in the summer. From July 15 through September 1, Anthony was top ten in the Majors (.415 OBP) and hit six home runs, along with 16 extra-base hits. The young outfielder was one of three Sox (Jarren Duran, Trevor Story) to have five or more home runs and 16+ extra-base hits in that span. An oblique strain that ended his regular season in September was a rare blimp on the radar for Anthony. Campbell and Mayer had more complicated seasons. The former hit very well in March and April. However, Campbell had trouble from May 1 onward; he had trouble with Major League breaking balls and changeups/splitters, expanded the zone more, and struck out a lot (28.6% K%). Despite the fact that he inked a multi-year extension in the spring, Campbell was sent down in June and didn’t return. Mayer, meanwhile, also had trouble with MLB pitching. The former first-rounder came up in late May to replace an injured Alex Bregman and hit just .228/.272/.402 (.674 OPS) across 44 games. A wrist injury ended his season in July. The rookie struggles from Campbell and Mayer came at an inopportune time for the Sox. For those who remember, Rafael Devers was traded in June to the Giants. While Boston had more regular-season success without Devers, it was hard to replace his offensive impact. It didn’t help that Triston Casas‘ season-ending injury opened up a void at first base and further created a rift between Boston and Devers. Boston was able to get midseason help via Nathaniel Lowe, cut by the Nationals. However, the losses were noticeable, especially when Anthony went down. As for the pitching, it couldn’t have been more of a stark campaign for Tanner Houck. Houck broke through as a starter in 2024, as he earned an All-Star nod. However, he was statistically one of the worst starters in baseball over the first third of the season. He ended May with the second-worst wOBA (min. 40 IP) among starters.

Democracy in peril and MP’s ‘ugly’ comments: readers discuss

Readers discuss a lack of democracy in the UK, the right for the public to use cash and racist comments by Reform MPs (Picture: Thomas Krych/Anadolu via Getty Images) Do you agree with our readers? Have your say on these MetroTalk topics and more in the comments Is the government 'getting rid of democracy altogether' Labour and the Tories have been passing laws that essentially ban protest without government permission, meaning that any future government could ban protest entirely. Sir Keir Starmer is trying to enforce digital ID, which would abolish personal privacy in matters of communication, finance, travel and employment. Various councils across the country have delayed their elections. Our politicians have convenient excuses for all of these actions. If I didn’t know any better, I would say they’re moving towards getting rid of democracy and the rule of law altogether. Caitlyn, Beeston Is Starmer’s ‘one in one out’ policy working? A migrant’s return to Britain by dinghy after being removed under Sir Keir Starmer’s ‘one in, one out’ deal proves the scheme is working, claims minister Josh MacAlister (Metro, Fri). That did make me chuckle. Spin so expertly created, it could have been taken from an episode of Yes, Prime Minister – a series written nearly 40 years ago but which seems just as relevant today. Dazla, Sunderlad This reader says ‘Yes, Prime Minister’ is a series just as relevant 10 years later (Picture: Nils Jorgensen/Shutterstock) Reader calls out Sarah Pochin’s comments on how seeing adverts with Black and Asian people ‘drives her mad’ Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin has been branded a ‘disgrace’ for saying it ‘drives her mad’ to see adverts featuring black and Asian people (Metro, Mon). Reform UK are really showing who Here you have one of their MPs voicing a thoroughly offensive view about seeing people of colour advertising goods. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage says her comments were ‘ugly’ but the ‘intention’ was not racist. What a joke. Proud Black Woman, Joyce Wokoh, Tottenham ‘So much for the promises of the Tories and Reform UK to stop the boats’, says reader Chris Shepherd (MetroTalk, Tue) believes that David Cameron and George Osborne initiated the so-called golden period of relations with China, which has damaged our national security. It was also Cameron who caved in to the Brexiteers’ demand for a referendum on our EU membership – thereby paving the way for Brexit which has also damaged our economic stability and national security. As EU members, we were part of the Dublin agreement which enabled us to send asylum seekers back to the EU member state where they originally claimed asylum. However, now we have lost that ability. So much for the promises of the Tories and Reform UK to stop the boats. Alan Yearsley, Sheffield Reader says the public ‘deserve a choice’ whether they pay with cash or card This reader says cash should remain a payment option (Picture: Getty Images) Kate in Shoreditch (MetroTalk, Tue) tells Paul to ‘wake up’ regarding bank charges for traders. If you are a small trader – and before you tot out the usual claim of tax dodging, I assure you we probably pay more tax relative to earnings than our big corporate compatriots – the charges for paying in cash amount to half that of card transactions. You can argue all you like for either side but the point is we deserve a choice. From your cry of ‘wake up’, I suspect you agree. Cath, London Reader says ‘There is no positive spin on Vladimir Putin testing new weapons’ Russia tested a nuclear-powered missile days after Washington imposed sanctions on the country (Metro, Mon). The Burevestnik missile went 8,700 miles in 15 hours, Russia claims. President Putin says the weapon, which can carry a nuclear warhead, is ‘invincible’ to missile defences. This is something we should all fear. When I take a car out for a test run, it’s because I might buy it to use. When I try on a new shirt, I might buy it to use. When citizens test a new rifle, it’s not going to be put away never to be used. There is no positive spin on Vladimir Putin testing new weapons. It is reasonable to panic. Dennis Fitzgerald, by email This reader says Russia is certainly a threat (Picture: Contributor/Getty Images) Reader’s travel gripe is ‘constant vaping by young travellers’ I would like to add to Dan’s comments (MetroTalk, Thu) about inconsiderate passengers on buses, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I travel on buses every day and I’m coming to dread it. My gripe is the constant vaping by young travellers, which is not only happening upstairs. The drivers seem to be unaware of this even though the horrible smell is clearly everywhere. Linda, by email Do you agree with our readers? How Catherine Connolly ‘caught the wind’

How Catherine Connolly ‘caught the wind’

Some sections of the Irish political establishment tried to derail Catherine Connolly’s presidential election campaign by resorting to the ‘project fear’ playbook. They failed. Instead she rose above the attempts to smear her with dignity personified. Her personal qualities shone through. In the end she won by a decisive landslide. Hope and optimism prevailed over despair. Polling in the last two weeks of the campaign indicated that her candidacy had real momentum. But in reality, the size of her mandate to be elected Uachtarán na hÉireann tapped into something deeper. Catherine Connolly ‘caught the wind’. She struck a chord deep within Irish society. She became a mirror which reflected back to Irish people our innate values of compassion, concern and solidarity. She spoke in terms which people understood and about the issues which matter to them. Her campaign was authentic and human. It projected a vision of a caring, inclusive society; of a new, united republic. One which goes beyond the inequalities, divisions, and partition of present day Ireland. The soon to be inaugurated President Connolly showed that she truly understands the cost of living crisis, the pressures and hardship for workers and families, and the inequalities and exclusion endured by the homeless and disabled citizens. She highlighted the need to create a future of new horizons and opportunities for our young people at home in Ireland. By standing to become the next President of Ireland, she gave the electorate a choice; an alternative to the systemic failures of the current conservative coalition. Ireland’s history of colonisation and our deep solidarity with the Palestinian people played directly into this campaign. So too did the importance of Ireland’s neutrality and our proud tradition of defending international peace. Huge sections of Irish society have been politicised and mobilised by the genocide and occupation in Palestine, and by the suffering of the people in Gaza. Catherine Connolly instinctively connected with that popular mood. Her commitment to the use of Gaeilge powerfully resonated with the growing movement, especially among young people at home and abroad, to promote the Irish language in the life of the nation. Never before has a presidential campaign in the southern state focused upon the growing momentum for Irish unity. It became another key illustration of the island wide discussion about Ireland’s future. The politics of constitutional change were front and centre. The need for the Irish government to meet its constitutional and political obligation to plan and prepare for reunification became integral to this campaign. Catherine Connolly promised to become a champion for a united Ireland during her term in office. During her campaign all of these critical themes came together in a coherent narrative espousing progressive, democratic, inclusive, and people-centred transformation. This election inspired a popular alliance for change. While Catherine Connolly stood as an independent candidate, her values and ambition became a lightning rod which forged a remarkable coalition among parties of the political left, progressive independents, and important sections of civic society, including rights groups and the Irish trade union movement. Cooperation between left and progressive parties has been growing since the last Irish general election. There is an increasing realisation that there is much more upon which to unite than divide. A recognition that shared ambition can only be achieved through joint collaboration. The transformation of Irish society, an end to the failure of partition, and creation of a new, united republic which serves the many, is a collective challenge which depends upon building alliances, and cooperation among and between progressive political parties, and wider society. The huge support to elect Catherine Connolly proves that this approach can deliver landmark gains. People want an alternative that not only works but wins. Her campaign represents an historic watershed because it mobilised such an effective political coalition and resonated with so many Irish citizens who could vote, as well as those hundreds of thousands of us in the north of Ireland and in the diaspora who are still denied the right to elect our president. This must be the last time we are denied that right as Irish citizens. It is still too early to say if this presidential campaign heralds a new realignment in Irish politics. However, it does show the potential clearly exists to do so; and, for the replacement of this failed conservative coalition government at the next general election. Catherine Connolly gave expression to a narrative and values of real social, economic and national change which connected with 63% of the electorate. That engagement has to be deepened. But outreach will also be needed with the significant numbers of voters who felt disenfranchised and did not vote. That bloc of the electorate is not monolithic. The challenge for all parties of the left and progressive civic society which are committed to political transformation is clear. We must immediately unpack the lessons from the election of President Connolly. Then we have to translate them into successful strategies which will attract the popular support to elect a left republican government committed to delivering Irish unity. The message for us all is surely, to keep ‘catching the wind’.

'He didn’t do enough'- ‘Struggling’ Tottenham star called out amidst difficult start to life under Thomas Frank

The 20-year-old’s hard work in training has left Thomas Frank impressed, with the Danish tactician opting to give him a chance to lead the line for Spurs in recent weeks. His first Premier League start came against Leeds United this season, and it is fair to say he grabbed that opportunity with both hands. He was one of the standout performers at Elland Road, capping off his impressive display with a goal to help the Lilywhites secure all three points. Thomas Frank needs to reconsider Mathys Tel’s position at Tottenham One of the major issues for Mathys Tel at Tottenham has been his inability to build on positive performances. This was evident when he failed to replicate his display against Leeds in the following week’s fixture against Aston Villa. This inconsistency might be addressed if Tel is allowed to play in his natural position on the left-flank instead of deployed up front in consecutive matches. Echoing these thoughts, John Wenham has also urged Frank to reconsider shifting the Frenchman to the left-flank. Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham said, “I certainly don’t see him as an out-and-out striker. So, I think off the left will become his best position. But at the minute, he’s seemingly battling for the opportunity to impress with Odobert for those minutes in the team. But unfortunately, for me, against Aston Villa, he didn’t do enough to say that he should be the one starting.”

'He should’ve stayed' – Rio Ferdinand slams Manchester United transfer blunder

Rio Ferdinand slams Manchester United for letting Danny Welbeck leave Old Trafford Manchester United have often looked back at some of their past decisions in their illustrious history, but there have been very few that have drawn more conversation than the one where they let Danny Welbeck leave Old Trafford. The 34-year-old striker had a connection to cherish with the fans. The Englishman grew up in Manchester, evolved through the academy and donned the United shirt with utmost pride. However, with changes in personnel and shifting tactical ideas, the Red Devils sold him to Premier League club Arsenal for £16 million back in 2014. It was purely a business deal, but the decision is still attracting conversation even today. In this regard, former United defender Rio Ferdinand, who shared the dressing room with the now 34-year-old centre-forward, has reignited the old debate. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, he criticised United’s hierarchy for not stepping in when Louis van Gaal decided to let the forward leave. Ferdinand called it a “balls-up” and argued that United should have protected a player who embodied their culture. Van Gaal justified the move by comparing Welbeck to Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, and Radamel Falcao, saying those players set the standard. Welbeck’s loyalty and discipline, however, made the sale sting for those who valued homegrown commitment over numbers. Eleven years later, the Brighton forward still proves his worth. He scored again against his former club at Old Trafford, even though United won 4-2. Quote via Metro A missed lesson and a modern reflection

Theo Walcott claims £75m Liverpool star looks ‘an absolute shadow of a player’

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott (Picture: Getty) Theo Walcott believes Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk looks ‘an absolute shadow of a player’ and said Arne Slot’s side need to ‘forget about their egos’ if they are to get back to their best. The defending champions won their opening five games of the new Premier League season, but a disastrous run of form now has them seventh in the table and seven points off leaders Arsenal. The Reds suffered yet another loss at the weekend, a 3-2 defeat to Brentford, meaning they have won just one of their last six games in all competitions and have lost four on the bounce in the league. Despite the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz, Liverpool went some way to strengthening their squad by spending almost £450million in the summer window. However, the high-profile signings of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are yet to pay dividends, and have left Slot constantly chopping and changing as he looks to find a set-up which gets the best out of his new-look squad. The fixtures continue to come thick and fast for the Reds, with a Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, before games against Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Manchester City before the international break. And Walcott said Slot must get his side focusing on the basics ahead of what could prove a pivotal few weeks in the Dutchman’s reign on Merseyside. Arne Slot’s side have lost four in a row in the Premier League (Picture: Getty) ‘I feel that they are overthinking quite a lot and that comes down to the manager,’ Walcott said on It’s Called Soccer. ‘When they signed loads of players we all went ‘Oh they are going to win the league, they’ve signed all these players’ and it was like a fantasy league. ‘Now when you look at the bigger picture and try to implement your style onto a team that didn’t actually have to change that much because it wasn’t broken. Virgil van Dijk has come in for scrutiny (Picture: Getty) ‘Trying to implement five, six, seven new players into a title-winning team doesn’t happen often. ‘You don’t have to tweak too much when you win the league, you really don’t, and I think there are players who aren’t themselves because they are overthinking and they are not playing as a team. ‘They are a bunch of individuals right now, too many egos, they need to separate that and try and focus on getting back to basics.’ @metrosportuk Blaming losing on spending £450m 🤔 Liverpool manager Arne Slot blames his side’s poor form on the fact that they bought so many new players in the summer transfer window, following their 3-2 defeat to Brentford. #arneslot #liverpool #brentford #pressconference #premierleague ♬ original sound – Metro Sport – Metro Sport Analysing Liverpool’s deficiencies further, Walcott pinpointed the spine of the team as a notable concern, particularly the centre-back partnership of Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate. ‘You have Virgil van Dijk who looks an absolute shadow of a player, Konate has been up and down,’ the former Arsenal forward added. ‘There is no structure to the way they play now, there’s no balance. ‘Virgil used to have a solid brick in front of him in Gravenberch but now he has no one at times and you have players who don’t want to comit to tackles. ‘The physical side of it has gone out of the window, so for me Liverpool need to go back to basics and forget about the egos because that is a big problem for me right now.’ Slot opted not to hold a press conference to preview Wednesday’s cup tie against Palace, with club’s not contractually obliged to have one before Carabao Cup matches. The Dutchman decided to do the same thing prior to last month’s third-round win against Southampton. For more stories like this, check our sport page. UNILAG bans skittmaking and content creation on campus

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has prohibited the unauthorized use of its campus, including hostels and other facilities, for video production by skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators. In a statement released on Thursday, October 28 and signed by its Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals filming skits, movies, and other contents on campus without approval. The move aims to protect the academic environment and preserve the institution’s image from misrepresentation in unregulated productions. “The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement said. The institution further stated that it has established procedures for recording or content production on campus to ensure safety, decorum, and the integrity of its academic and residential spaces. The university directed that anyone—students, staff, or external collaborators must first obtain official approval from the communications unit before filming. “Members of the University community and general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility,” the statement added.

Problematic LLG elections

The much-delayed Local Level Government elections are on. Everywhere in the country, the voters are going to the polls. Already, we are getting reports that many in Jiwaka are not happy with the newly created wards and LLG in Kambia that they have taken the law into their own hands by erecting roadblocks on the Highlands Highway to draw the attention of the Government. The Jiwakans are not alone. There are many others in the country who are not happy with this LLG elections because of several issues, one being the inflated voter registry that is being used. Others are upset that the new wards and LLGs were illegally created and the elections will definitely end up in court. And this is consistent with the advice provided by government lawyers. However, the Electoral Commissioner, Simon Sinai is adamant that he is, by law, obliged to allow the elections to proceed. Sinai is also a matter of concern by people who are watching the election over the status of his tenure in office. Sinai has registered two birth days – in one record with the pay office at the Department of Personal Management, he was born in 1962 and in the record with the National Identification Project office, he was born in 1965. This is a matter that can be contested in Court by any losing candidate. LLG elections were previously regarded as “samting blong ples” and it was run and managed easily. Today, the LLG elections have suddenly become important because of the increased funding made available to the LLGs and the wards. Furthermore, the LLGs are considered the stepping stone to the National Parliament and has attracted candidates from all walks of life like never before. Our people should be careful with how they conduct themselves in the current elections because the results could be overturned in court later. When that happens, they would be spending huge, get injured or killed for nothing.
