The proof is undeniable: People will still pay for great shooters

The biggest multiplayer shooters of the moment cost money. Arc Raiders is $40, has no free trial, and it's a top seller. Battlefield 6 launched for $70 and instantly became the most successful game in the series (later adding a free-to-play battle royale mode). Both are raking it in, both are reviewing well, and both are being played more than several of the sturdiest free-to-play shooters on Steam. The numbers won't always look like that, but the wild successes of Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders prove an important point: people want to pay for great multiplayer shooters again. That's music to my ears, because it didn't always look like we'd get back to this point. Not long ago, it wasn't unreasonable to believe the future of all multiplayer gaming was free-to-play. Under the umbrella of Fortnite's ascension in 2018, new battle royales started cropping up for free, and they were instantly popular. Meanwhile, traditional shooters that dared hang a price tag were suddenly viewed as old-fashioned. DICE was on the wrong side of the trend when it put out Battlefield 5, an eventually beloved game that was ignored at the time. When did the shift happen? I reckon it's less about how paid games have changed and more up to how the modern free-to-play experience has become a nightmare. Storefront first, videogame second. Everywhere you look are games tangled up in so many layers of microtransactions, limited-time events, and premium tracks that we've been collectively wrung-out by the upsell. Paying the price of that exhaustion are a graveyard of good games that deserved to exist, but were shut down because they weren't immediate hits as free-to-play products. You can't argue that the biggest free games aren't technically a good value, but they come with crap that you're just supposed to put up with because there's no cover charge. Marvel Rivals is a decent example: Heroes and maps are free, but the experience of playing it as a free user is like walking a used car lot with an increasingly impatient salesperson. Paid games, in the best cases, offer a more favorable contract. Battlefield 6's best quality is that it's plucked out of 2011—a good package of modes, maps, and guns that feels complete from the jump (even if it could really use bigger maps). Arc Raiders is similarly fleshed out: its "extraction RPG" loop is surprisingly rich and with four huge maps at launch, it's also fairly complete. Free games tend to launch at the starting point, not the finish line. When Overwatch first came around in 2016, it had over a dozen heroes, lots of maps, and three distinct modes. When Overwatch 2 relaunched as a free-to-play joint in 2022, it had a couple new maps, three new heroes, and a mode. Not exactly earth-shattering stuff, but at least you could immediately spend hundreds of dollars on legendary skins. This is, and has always been, the advantage of buying games. You buy it, you have it, and there's ideally enough in there to get all the fun you'll need from it (see also, Helldivers 2 and BattleBit Remastered). But expectations are different now. Battlefield 6 and Arc Raiders could be anti-service games. They could cease all updates tomorrow, having sold a complete product, and move onto something else. I could live with that, but even though buying multiplayer games is coming back into fashion, we also still want them to become more over time—more maps, modes, guns, stories, outfits—and will tolerate an amount of free-to-play crap to accommodate that. It's a sticky relationship: how much and how quickly can devs push players to reinvest in the game they've already paid for? Hunt: Showdown and Rainbow Six Siege waited years before adding traditional battle pass strings to a paid game, and it went over fine. Judging by the Battlefield 6 community, which is currently in a minor uproar over getting pop-up ads for a $25 battle pass, three weeks is probably too soon. Arc Raiders is going easy on the upsell for now: there's a store tab with premium skins, but there's also a free battle pass with outfits and gameplay-relevant items. Indeed, being a shooter fan is a more complicated prospect that it was a decade ago, but at least in the short term, the return of paid multiplayer is giving us better things to play.

Rams get thrilling Puka Nacua injury update Matthew Stafford will love

The Los Angeles Rams aim to advance to a 6-2 record in Week 9 when they take on the New Orleans Saints. With the team coming off a bye, it sounds like the offense is going to have Puka Nacua back in the lineup, which is something quarterback Matthew Stafford might be jumping with joy about. Reports indicate that Nacua, who is 24 years old, is not on the Rams’ injury report and is considered available to play against the Saints, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. That means the Rams’ offense should be in full swing in Week 9. “Rams WR Puka Nacua is officially off the injury report and good to go Sunday vs. New Orleans.” The record holder for most receptions and receiving yards in a single season by a rookie initially suffered an ankle injury in Week 6 when the Rams beat the Baltimore Ravens 17-3. He was forced to miss the 35-7 Week 7 stomping of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The bye being in Week 8 certainly gave Puka Nacua the time he needed to recover from the ankle injury. When healthy, Nacua is easily one of the most consistent wide receivers in the league. Although he has missed one game, the star wideout still leads the league in targets with 65. So far this season, Puka Nacua has recorded 54 receptions for 616 yards and three total touchdowns (two receiving. Despite Nacua’s absence, Stafford has still been playing at a high level this season. He’s been feeding the ball to teammate Davante Adams and has played a key role in leading Los Angeles to a 5-2 record. Through seven games played, Stafford has accumulated 1,866 passing yards and 17 touchdowns (league-high) while completing 66.1% of his pass attempts. Look for Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua to connect often against the Saints on Sunday. However, it could be a bit of a tough battle, as New Orleans does have the ninth-ranked pass defense in the league, despite being 1-7 on the season entering Week 9.

Blue Jays’ Bo Bichette makes attention-grabbing admission before World Series Game 6

The Toronto Blue Jay have returned home to the Rogers Centre, and a victory Friday or Saturday night will give them a World Series victory over the defending champions and heavily favored Los Angeles Dodgers. Bo Bichette has been in the lineup during the Fall Classic even though he is less than 100 percent healthy. He suffered a knee sprain in September and missed the Blue Jays’ postseason victories over the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners. Bichette has split his time between second base and designated hitter during the World Series. He has been able to contribute 5 hits in 18 at bats and 3 runs batted in even though his running ability has been curtailed. Bichette is scheduled to become a free agent after the World Series, and he was asked if he thought about the potential end of his association with the Blue Jays. The hard-hitting infielder said that moving on from the team is not what he is thinking about with the championship on the line. “I’d be lying if I hadn’t thought about that at some point in the season, but I’ve got a World Series to win,” Bichette said, per Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. Blue Jays hoping Kevin Gausman can wrap up the title After beating the Dodgers in Games 4 and 5 in Los Angeles, the Blue Jays are hoping that Kevin Gausman can continue to keep the opposition in a batting slump. Gausman will face Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the Dodgers pitcher was dominant when he shut down the Blue Jays in Game 2. The sixth game figures to be a pitcher’s duel and it will likely come down to which hurler makes a key mistake or two at the wrong time. The Blue Jays are hoping Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandero Kirk can find a way to solve Yamamoto, while the Dodgers need Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman to attack and succeed against Gausman

Hibs ace Chaiwa talks family pride, a mother's love - and his ex-footballer dad's DIY 'fix' for a broken leg

At the age of just 21, Miguel Chaiwa displays an emotional maturity beyond his years. An understanding of football, and of life, touched by recent sadness. But also enhanced by the sort of family support strong enough to be felt across continents. Whether he’s paying tribute to late mum Florence Mulenga, who passed away in June, or telling truly uproarious stories about dad Changa Chaiwa, a former player who once made a genuinely hilarious/horrifying DIY attempt to mend a broken leg, the Hibs and Zambia midfielder can’t help but beam with pride. Despite leaving his homeland to sign for Swiss side Young Boys as an 18-year-old, he still feels obvious ties to his homeland. That goes especially for his dad, the first person on the phone after every game. For good or bad … “My dad is also a former football player,” revealed Chaiwa. “So he's a man who's always on me each and every time when he watches the game. “The first thing when I reach home, he's always on the call with me, telling me the mistakes or you need to do this or you need to do that. So I might say he's more like a leader, my mentor. “Yes, he played in Zambia as well. He played for Power Dynamos. He was a winger. “I never got to see him play, no, but his former teammates used to tell me stories about him. So for me, I would just joke around with him. “I tell him that a long time ago, football is more like you're just playing for fun. He would say: ‘No, you need to be serious. You have to do it with passion, with commitment. Everything, the little details matter.’” Pressed on what sort of tales his father’s old team-mates shared, Chaiwa said: “Really funny stories. Because there was one time they were telling me he got injured. He had a broken bone in his leg. “So apparently they had to travel away. So now what he did, two days later on, he went to the physio. He told him, no, you need to have an operation. “So what he decided to do, he took like two planks and tied them to his leg and started running. “Then when the plane took off, he shouted: ‘Doc! Doc!’ When the doctor asked him what was wrong, he just pointed to his leg like, I can't play, I can't play. Because the leg was so sore and so big. Yeah, so he was a very serious man!” Changa has only been to Europe to see his boy play once, with work commitments keeping him away. With a sister in her final year of medical school, the midfielder is having to get by without a steady stream of house guests in Edinburgh. Still, he’s found a new sort of family at Hibs. Players from all parts of the world and all walks of life, bound together by the odd sort of camaraderie that professional sport produces. Chaiwa, who signed for Hibs in August, revealed: “Yeah, it's been a pretty emotional journey for me. A lot has happened these past few months with my family. “I also lost my mum in June. I might say my mum was a strong woman compared to my dad. My mum, she was really, really tough. She was the boss of the house. “I remember, for her, me playing in Europe was more like a big opportunity. And she was really, really happy. Everybody was really, really happy for me and excited when I moved. “The club here have really, really supported me. And I really, really appreciate what they did for me. “Because they know losing a mum is hard for anyone. So I might say I'm not alone. They are always there to support me, to guide me. “Sometimes I go see my family. They help me so much. The people at the club would ask: ‘Do you want to see your family or not?’ “I'm always honest to say, OK, this time around, I may just concentrate on football. Or I can go, if I have a chance to go see my family, I can go and see them. “When I first came to Europe, I was 18 years old. It was a really, really different environment for me. “Going as a young player, going to Europe, different language, different culture, different food. So compared now, looking at the first few months, it was a little bit tricky for me.” Chaiwa’s decision to join Hibs in the summer was partly influenced, he admits, by playing at Celtic Park in the Champions League last season. He got a feel for the frenetic nature of Scottish football. And fancied his chances of thriving in such a fast and furious environment. GET THE LATEST HIBS NEWS DIRECTLY TO YOUR EMAIL INBOX WITH OUR FREE NEWSLETTER SERVICE He has found, in David Gray, a manager dedicated to improving players. And that means individual work with a signing who has the touch, talent and physical profile to play at a higher level. “For me, first and foremost, he's really supportive,” said Chaiwa, when askeda bout the manager. “And he always encourages me. “”hat I can say is that he's somebody who really appreciates when the player is doing well. And what he's expecting from me, it's not a lot. “But looking at how we play games, we carry out them each and every game I play. We pick some mistakes where I can do good, how you need to do this, how you need to do that. “So for me, it's not a big deal. We can talk about it after the game, especially. “When I joined the club, he specifically told me: ‘We're looking for a player who is like you, dynamic, who is able to go box to box. So this is the kind of style that we want.’ So it's up to me whether I can do it or not.” Your next Hibs read: Predicted XI as David Gray has “decision to make” over defender
