Department: Academic Advising, Advising Center - CHSS Salary: $43,001Job SummaryThe Academic Success Coordinator I provides proactive and holistic academic and career advising to prospective, new, transfer, continuing, and re-admitted students in assigned caseload.DutiesProvides academic advising to all new and returning students and develops individualized programs of study for each studentCreates official degree plans for current students and meets with prospective students to help provide unofficial academic planningAdvises students in career exploration, networking, and job-seeking strategies and promotes career fairs for internships and job searchesProvides preliminary evaluation of transcripts and submits articulation requests for the respective collegeServes as a student advocate and assists students by making appropriate referrals to financial aid, Student Business Services, Learning Support, Counseling Services, and other campus servicesMaintains continuous communication with students via email, telephone, and in-person. Runs communication campaigns in venues, such as EAB, and supports efforts with the Early Alert, and Mid-term grades for assigned caseloadTrains students on how to use advising tools, degree audits, and course prerequisites, and serves students on academic probationSupports retention and timely graduation efforts for the college and UHD studentsAssists with First Time in College (FTIC) and transfer orientation sessionsParticipates in on-campus recruitment and registration activities with Houston area community colleges, high schools, and community eventsContributes to advising, graduation, and career workshops/events as a co-facilitatorParticipates, attends, and assists with pre-commencement and commencement ceremonies/activitiesMaintains a strong, positive, and collaborative relationship with the College leadership, Enrollment Management, and FacultyMarginal DutiesPerforms all other duties as assignedSupervisory ResponsibilitiesDirect ReportsNoneDelegation of WorkN/ASupervision GivenN/AQualificationsRequired EducationBachelor's degreeRequired ExperienceMinimum of one (1) year in academic advising or student support experience within higher educationLicense/CertificationNone requiredPreferred QualificationsNoneKnowledge, Skills And AbilitiesKnowledgeKnowledge of trends, issues, and accepted practices relevant to the positionSkillsStrong interpersonal skills, and proven experience working with students, parents, faculty, and staffExcellent computer proficiency (MS Office Word, Excel, and Outlook)AbilitiesStrong ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary student serviceProven ability to work with higher education software systems, analyze data, produce reports, and implement systems to monitor and manage staff productivityCommitment to serving a representative and diverse faculty, administrative staff, and student bodyWork Location and Physical DemandsPrimary Work LocationWorks in an office environment or at off campus locations for recruitment and advising eventsPhysical DemandsWork is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elementsPosition is physically comfortable; individual has discretion about walking, standing, etcWork environment involves minimal exposure to physical risksTypical work occurs during business hours Monday through Friday however this position may require flexible hours as needed to include evenings and weekends serving students in virtual, on-, and off-campusComplies with all UHD and UH system policies and proceduresAll positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check.The University of Houston System and its universities are Equal Opportunity Institutions.
