African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.The African Medical Centre of Excellence will be implemented in four phases over a six-year period, starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility. The centre will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighbouring West African countries within its first five years of operation.The clinical areas the centre will specialise in are Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology. A range of businesses providing relevant health support will support this facility and provide commercial services to its patients and staff, thus creating a healthcare ecosystem sustainably designed to deliver long-term value to its community and region.This is an outstanding initiative and creates a unique opportunity to be involved in the opening chapter of this exciting project that is set to make a decisive impact on non-communicable disease care across Nigeria and West Africa. What makes this facility even more special is its very close partnership with King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.Job SummaryThe Consultant Oncologist (Radiotherapy) will provide expert clinical leadership and deliver high-quality, patient-centred radiotherapy services. The role holder will be responsible for the management and treatment of cancer patients using advanced radiation therapy techniques. This includes precise treatment planning, implementation, and follow-up care, as part of a multidisciplinary team. The role holder will also contribute to clinical research, supervise junior medical staff, and ensure the highest standards of safety and efficacy in radiation oncology.Key Accountabilities/ResponsibilitiesClinical Leadership and Radiotherapy ServicesProvide expert consultation, diagnosis, and management for patients requiring radiotherapy.Develop, prescribe, and oversee complex radiotherapy treatment plans using advanced technologies (e.g., IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, SRS).Ensure accurate and timely delivery of radiation treatments, monitoring patient response and managing side effects.Lead and actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss and plan patient care.Establish and maintain best practices and clinical protocols in radiation oncology.Quality Assurance and Patient SafetyDrive the adoption of new and emerging radiotherapy technologies and techniques to improve patient outcomes.Participate in and lead clinical research trials and contribute to scholarly publications in the field of radiation oncology.Contribute to the hospital’s academic mission through teaching, training, and mentoring of residents, fellows, and staff.Innovation, Research and DevelopmentDrive the adoption of new radiotherapy techniques, technologies, and clinical protocols to enhance treatment efficacy and patient experience.Participate in and lead clinical research projects, contributing to the evidence base in radiation oncology and encouraging publications.Contribute to AMCE’s academic mission through teaching, training, and mentoring of residents, fellows, and staff.Leadership and MentorshipProvide professional supervision, mentorship, and training to junior doctors, medical officers, and registrars in the oncology department.Foster a collaborative and educational environment that encourages professional growth and excellence.Conduct regular performance reviews and support the professional development of team members.QualificationsMedical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.Fellowship or Board Certification in Radiation Oncology/Clinical Oncology and a valid medical licensePostgraduate qualification in a relevant oncology subspecialty (desirable).Possession of a valid medical license.Postgraduate qualification in a relevant oncology subspecialty (desirable)ExperienceMinimum of 5 years of experience as a Consultant Oncologist (Radiotherapy).Proven expertise in advanced radiotherapy techniques including treatment planning.Demonstrated experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary oncology team.A track record of participation in clinical research is highly desirable.Proficiency in using Oncology Information Systems (OIS) and related healthcare IT platforms.
