African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.The African Medical Centre of Excellence will be implemented in four phases over a six-year period, starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility. The centre will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighbouring West African countries within its first five years of operation.The clinical areas the centre will specialise in are Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology. A range of businesses providing relevant health support will support this facility and provide commercial services to its patients and staff, thus creating a healthcare ecosystem sustainably designed to deliver long-term value to its community and region.This is an outstanding initiative and creates a unique opportunity to be involved in the opening chapter of this exciting project that is set to make a decisive impact on non-communicable disease care across Nigeria and West Africa. What makes this facility even more special is its very close partnership with King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.Job SummaryThe Urology/Cystoscopy Consultant plays a vital role in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of urological conditions, with a specific focus on cystoscopy procedures. This specialist position ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centric care, addressing a wide range of disorders including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, bladder cancer, and prostate diseases. The role demands advanced surgical skills, a commitment to innovation, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary medical environment to enhance patient outcomes.As a core member of the surgical team, the Urology/Cystoscopy Consultant will be responsible for conducting minimally invasive procedures, endoscopic interventions, and open surgeries as required. The successful candidate will also contribute to the education of junior medical staff, promote research initiatives, and actively participate in the continuous improvement of hospital policies and clinical protocols.This position requires strong leadership capabilities, cultural competence, and a commitment to delivering care that aligns with international medical standards and the local regulatory framework in Nigeria. Key Responsibilities Clinical Practice:Perform diagnostic and therapeutic cystoscopy procedures, including tumour resections and stone removal.Conduct minimally invasive and open urological surgeries for conditions such as kidney stones, bladder dysfunction, and prostate enlargement.Develop and execute comprehensive care plans tailored to individual patient needs.Oversee pre-operative assessments and post-operative care to ensure optimal recovery and outcomes. Patient Care:Deliver compassionate and culturally sensitive care to patients and their families.Provide clear explanations of diagnoses, treatment options, and prognoses to patients.Maintain detailed and accurate medical records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.Collaboration:Actively engage in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to review complex cases and develop collaborative care strategies.Partner with nephrologists, radiologists, oncologists, and nursing teams to optimise patient outcomes.Support allied health professionals with clinical guidance and decision-making.Education and Training:Supervise and mentor junior doctors, registrars, and medical students.Conduct training sessions on advancements in urological care and endoscopic techniques.Participate in hospital-wide educational initiatives and continuous professional development (CPD).Research and Innovation:Initiate and contribute to clinical research projects, focusing on innovations in urological surgery and cystoscopy techniques.Publish findings in peer-reviewed medical journals and present at professional conferences.Stay abreast of advancements in the field and implement evidence-based practices.Compliance and Governance:Adhere to hospital protocols, national healthcare regulations, and international standards.Ensure compliance with infection control, patient safety, and risk management policies.Participate in audits, peer reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to maintain high standards of care.QualificationsMBBS or equivalent medical degreeFellowship in Urology or related surgical specialty (e.g., FRCS or equivalent)Certification in Advanced Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive SurgeryValid medical licence to practise in NigeriaAdditional training in oncology or nephrologyCertification in robotic-assisted urological surgeryExperienceMinimum 5 years of post-specialisation experience in urologyExpertise in advanced cystoscopy and minimally invasive proceduresExperience in a resource-limited healthcare settingPublished research in urological diseases or surgical techniques
