The Taxation Division promotes voluntary compliance with all tax laws through education, assistance and customer service. A Tax Examiner reviews tax returns for accuracy and completeness, ensures the tax return can be processed as filed, resolves errors and contacts taxpayers to obtain any missing information.Furthermore, Tax Examiners can be responsible for analyzing accounting files, issuing refunds or bills, calculating penalty and interest, collecting delinquent taxes, handling taxpayer complaints, adjusting for discrepancies and working with other taxing authorities such as the Internal Revenue Service, local municipalities or agencies in another state.What We DoThe Income Tax Section is responsible for processing all income (individual, corporate, partnership, and fiduciary) and severance tax returns, PTC rebates and issuing the associated refunds and bills. The Section applies the necessary statutes pertaining to the tax programs that our group administers. The Section also resolves disputes that might result from a reduced refund, tax delinquency or non-filer assessment. This can include adjustments of tax, penalty, penalty-interest, and/or interest. The Section verifies incoming returns and applications for accuracy and completeness. Credits and subtractions are reviewed as well.Typical Day as a Tax Examiner IIIThe purpose of this position is to supervise Tax Examiner I and IIs who review returns and applications, issue assessments and approve refunds and rebates for income and severance tax returns and property tax credit applications using third party data, returns/applications, policies, procedures, rules and standards to determine compliance with filing requirements. The tax data is used by the Department of Revenue for account management, statistical analysis, fraud detection, tax audit, and compliance efforts. Set performance goals and project deadlines that align with the section's goals. Delegate work to employees, track progress and provide constructive feedback throughout projects and job duty assignments.This is a remote position that is primarily tasked with performing work duties via flex-place (aka telework, work-from-home arrangements) with infrequent on-site visits with client groups, including to the position address at 2829 W Howard Place.Residency RequirementMinimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal RightsThis posting is only open to residents of the State of Colorado at the time of submitting your application.Education/Licensure/Certification/ExperienceMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)ANDFour (4) years of experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, business economics, finance or in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.OREducation And ExperienceA combination of related education in Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Business Management, Economics, and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to four (4) yearsPreferred QualificationsThe preferred candidate will possess the following: Previous experience as a supervisor of other professionals in person and/or remotely. Demonstrated experience organizing work groups, coaching employees, monitoring and documenting the performance of employees and job assignments. Monitoring and documenting internal processes to change/establish a process and procedures. Familiarity with GenTax and/or other tax software. Proficient with Microsoft and Google Suite. Experience in a fast-paced, independent and production driven environment. Strong communication (both oral and written, and interpersonal skills).
