Chelsea considers sensational return of former star

Could the German warrior make a stunning Stamford Bridge comeback? As Chelsea continues its rebuilding project under Enzo Maresca, reports from Spain suggest the club could turn to a familiar face to reinforce its backline: Antonio Rüdiger, the German defender who left Stamford Bridge for Real Madrid in 2022. According to MARCA, the 32-year-old centre-back is approaching the final six months of his contract with Los Blancos, and Chelsea is exploring the possibility of re-signing him. A complicated departure and unfinished business Rüdiger’s exit from Chelsea in 2022 was one of the most emotional farewells in recent club history. He had become a pillar of Thomas Tuchel’s defence, anchoring the backline that delivered Chelsea’s historic 2021 UEFA Champions League triumph. But as contract talks stalled due to sanctions placed on former owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea were unable to extend Rüdiger’s deal. Real Madrid swooped in, securing the German on a free transfer. At the time, Rüdiger admitted that negotiations had been “difficult long before the sanctions,” hinting at differences in valuation and long-term vision. Yet, his affection for Chelsea never faded. “Chelsea will always have a special place in my heart,” he wrote in his farewell message. “It’s not a goodbye, it’s see you later.” Rüdiger’s time at Real Madrid has been successful overall, winning La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, but the 2025 season has been a difficult one. A hamstring injury suffered in September has ruled him out for much of the campaign, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as new manager Xabi Alonso reshapes the team. Spanish outlet MARCA reports that contract extension talks were paused when Rüdiger went down injured, a decision said to be mutual but one that created uncertainty about his long-term future. Madrid, meanwhile, is believed to be planning a gradual defensive overhaul, with both Rüdiger and David Alaba nearing the end of their contracts. Though the club hasn’t ruled out extending the German’s deal, the signals suggest they may look for younger replacements in the summer.

Drama in Turkey — Super Eagles striker Onuachu scores again, but heartbreak strikes Trabzonspor in dying seconds

Paul Onuachu scored again to extend his lead over Victor Osimhen in the Golden Boot race, but a late Alanyaspor goal denied Trabzonspor all three points. Brimming with confidence, Paul Onuachu continued to shine for Trabzonspor as he extended his lead over compatriot Victor Osimhen in the Turkish Süper Lig’s Golden Boot race. However, his side was denied a crucial victory by a late equaliser from Alanyaspor in a dramatic 1-1 draw at Papara Park on Saturday. The 31-year-old striker, who remains on the periphery of the Super Eagles national team setup despite his club form, once again showed his goal-scoring form by finding the net in the 15th minute. Onuachu’s opener was a demonstration of his aerial ability and clinical finishing, a key asset for Trabzonspor as they push for the league title. This latest strike was his eighth league goal of the season, giving him a five-goal cushion over Galatasaray's Victor Osimhen in the top-scorer standings. Osimhen, who was carefully marked throughout the encounter in the prior week's Galatasaray-Trabzonspor draw, will be keen to respond in his next fixture. Despite taking the lead, Trabzonspor struggled to capitalise on their advantage. Alanyaspor, determined not to lose against the title contenders, ramped up the pressure as the match wore on. The visitors’ resilience paid off 17 minutes from time when Ianis Hagi produced a stunning long-range strike that left Trabzonspor’s goalkeeper with no chance. The equaliser, scored deep in the second half, was a heartbreaking blow for Onuachu and his teammates, as it denied them all three points that could have significantly boosted their championship hopes. The match ended 1-1, with both teams sharing the spoils. The draw ensures Onuachu’s lead in the Golden Boot race remains intact, while Victor Osimhen and his team will be eager to respond in their upcoming matches to close the gap. The result has immediate implications for the title race. Trabzonspor, who were second prior to the match, have dropped to third place in the Süper Lig table with 25 points from 12 games. They now trail Fenerbahce SK, who sit second with 25 points from 11 games, and league leaders Galatasaray S.K., who top the table with 29 points from 11 games. The draw gives Galatasaray the chance to extend their lead on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles' head coach, Eric Chelle, recently announced his 24-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Playoffs against Gabon, which will be played on Thursday, in Rabat, Morocco. Despite his brilliant goal-scoring form, Paul Onuachu was notably not included in the squad, with Chelle opting for other forwards like Osimhen, Tolu Arokodare, Akor Adams, and Olakunle Olusegun. But the Nigerian giant remains a central figure in his club's ambitions as the race intensifies toward the final stretch of the first half of the season.

Spurs' Frank takes the positives despite worries over poor home form

LONDON :Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank is an optimist so it was no surprise that he sought to accentuate the positives despite his side conceding a 96th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United on Saturday. Matthijs de Ligt's header at the death denied Spurs a chance to move into second place in the Premier League, at least until Sunderland host leaders Arsenal, but Frank said a significantly improved performance after halftime had pleased him. Spurs' home form in the league remains a concern though, with five points from six matches and only a single win which came against newly promoted Burnley on the season's opening day. Some fans made their displeasure known at halftime with boos, which also greeted Frank's decision to replace the lively Xavi Simons with Mathys Tel, though the change proved to be inspired. Tel levelled the game at 1-1 and sparked the turnaround, finishing after a move down the left involving two other substitutes, Wilson Odobert and Destiny Udogie. SPURS STILL SEEKING 'RIGHT BALANCE' Frank's efforts to add defensive solidity to Spurs have left them looking short of ideas up front, though they were better in the second half. "We're playing at home. Of course, we all want to win and, you know, don't talk too much about home form and all that – and I know we need to win before we don't talk about it," he said. "But the way we turned around to stay in the game, kept doing the right thing throughout the second half, very, very happy with that – and also so close to win it. And, on any other day, we win it." Frank conceded that Spurs were "searching to find the right balance up front", after PSG loanee Randal Kolo Muani was substituted at halftime following an anonymous display. But he also pointed to a good chance missed by Richarlison when the game was at 0-0. "One of the biggest chances was Richarlison from a cross from Brennan (Johnson)... (if) he scores on that instead of Bryan (Mbuemo), it changes a little bit and open up the game a tiny bit more," Frank said. "But we constantly work on the relationship and try to improve with the players and try to find what is exactly the right plan, but I think there were small steps in the right direction."

He should finish the season with - Rohr sets ambitious new goals for Osimhen

Gernot Rohr backs Osimhen to hit 30-goal mark for Galatasaray. Former Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has challenged Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to score 30 goals for Galatasaray this season, following his explosive start to the campaign. Osimhen, who made his senior international debut under Rohr, has been in remarkable form since his move to the Turkish giants. After an initial season-long loan, the deal was made permanent during the recent summer transfer window. While he has netted three times in eight Super Lig appearances, the 26-year-old has truly excelled on the European stage. Osimhen has scored an impressive six goals in just three Champions League matches for "Cimbom." His performance against Ajax in Amsterdam, where he scored a stunning hat-trick to secure a 3-0 victory, broke several club and competition records. The feat drew widespread acclaim from figures like Ilkay Gundogan and John Ogu, with Rohr now adding his voice to the chorus of praise. What Rohr said Rohr, who now manages the Benin national team, lauded the striker's development into one of the world's elite forwards. "He is undoubtedly one of the best centre-forwards in the world," Rohr told Africa Foot. He added, "He's a true goalscorer who thrives in high-stakes matches. The Champions League, World Cup qualifiers, the Africa Cup of Nations, the Istanbul derbies… He loves a big atmosphere." With nine goals already to his name across all competitions this season, Rohr believes Osimhen is on track for a prolific year. "It's early November and he already has nine goals. At this rate, he should finish the season with around thirty goals to his name," the Franco-German coach added. As Nigeria prepares for the World Cup playoffs, Super Eagles supporters will be counting on their star striker to carry his exceptional club form onto the international stage and lead the team to success.

I'm an adult — Alvarez reveals why he refused to copy Messi and other Argentina players

Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez explained why he remains different from other Argentina players. Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez recently explained why he has no tattoos on his body, explaining that eschewing tattooing has been ingrained in him since childhood. The 25-year-old Argentine striker was a member of the triumphant Albiceleste squad from the 2022 World Cup. While most players on the team, including captain Lionel Messi, have tattoos of the World Cup trophy, among other markings on their bodies, Alvarez's skin remains unblemished. What he said In a recent interview with L’Equipe, Alvarez said that he was told he was the only player in the Argentina squad without a tattoo. He acknowledged the fact and explained why he has not gone down that route. "The other day, with the national team, someone pointed out to me that I was the only player without tattoos,” he said. "I don’t do it to be different. When I was young, my dad used to tell us, ‘No tattoos, no cigarettes, no alcohol. As an adult, everyone makes their own choices, but I just don’t feel the need to do it.” Meanwhile, Alvarez has carried his form from last season into this campaign for Atletico Madrid, scoring nine goals in 14 matches across LALIGA and the Champions League. Hence, he is on the radar of Barcelona, who are keen on making him the permanent replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

Alex Marquez battles past Acosta to claim sprint win at Portuguese GP

PORTIMAO, Portugal :Alex Marquez powered from fifth on the grid to win a thrilling Portuguese Grand Prix sprint on Saturday, denying KTM's Pedro Acosta his maiden victory after a wheel-to-wheel battle that lasted until the chequered flag. The Gresini Racing rider, who has already wrapped up the championship runner-up spot behind brother Marc, engaged in a captivating duel with his 21-year-old Spanish compatriot that saw the pair swap positions multiple times. For Acosta, it was a bitter pill to swallow as what appeared to be his best opportunity yet to reach the top step of the podium slipped through his fingers, leaving him to settle for second place. Pole sitter Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia salvaged third to improve his chances of finishing third overall in the championship and the Italian now sits 10 points clear of Ducati's Francesco Bagnaia, who finished eighth. 'A REALLY GOOD START' "We needed to (take a) risk, starting from P5 was a little bit difficult but I did a really good start," Marquez said. "I was feeling really, really good, the last corner acceleration was really good. So I was able to attack in that point. "It's true that I used too much tyre in that point to overtake but it was my plan. So the plan was perfect." When the lights went out, Bezzecchi shot off the line to take the lead ahead of Acosta while Marquez gained two places to slot into third in a blistering start from fifth on the grid. But Acosta was aggressive from the outset and used the Aprilia's slipstream on lap two to overtake Bezzecchi and take the lead. Before the Italian could respond, Marquez also made his move to push him down to third. BATTLE FOR THE LEAD What followed was a masterclass in wheel-to-wheel racing as Marquez and Acosta battled for the lead, with the two Spaniards constantly swapping positions while third-placed Bezzecchi was a mere spectator with the best seat in the house. The tactical battle reached its climax when Marquez finally broke the youngster's resilience to surge into the lead with four laps left and slowly widened the gap, denying Acosta the chance to attack. Acosta desperately hung on to Marquez's rear tyre and attempted a late gamble on the final lap but the Gresini Racing rider defended well and finished just 0.12 seconds ahead of his compatriot. "Tough! We know that our bike is suffering a lot with the tyre consumption and we know we manage the best that we can," Acosta said. "We were super close, even more than in Malaysia. Let's try again tomorrow." Nicolo Bulega, the World Superbike rider called up by Ducati to replace the injured Marc Marquez, crashed out on lap four.

'We lacked quality in the simple things' — Amorim reacts to Tottenham draw

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has criticised his team's performance in his side's 2-2 draw against Tottenham. Manchester United boss Rúben Amorim acknowledged the difficulty of his side's 2-2 draw with Tottenham but expressed disappointment that three points were within reach for the Red Devils. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the tense affair, Amorim suggested his team needs to improve its game intelligence. "It was a complicated match, especially in the end. If you look at the game the three points were there to take. I think we can be so much better to understand more what's happening in the game." The coach pointed to issues in the final third and praised his squad's fighting spirit amid injuries and setbacks. "We lacked a little bit in the final third, the quality was not perfect. We fight in every adversity. We lost Harry Maguire, Casemiro, Benjamin Sesko and we lose two goals, but we still managed to score. "That lack of quality in the simple things of the games, it wasn't there. We move on." Looking ahead to the upcoming break, Amorim stated the time will be used for vital improvement and assessment: "All the players are internationals. We are going to use that space of time to improve not just the team, but the club. We have to check [our injured players]."

Saim Ayub steers Pakistan to ODI series win over South Africa

Saim Ayub scored 77 from 70 balls as Pakistan eased to a seven-wicket victory over South Africa in the third and final One-Day International in Faisalabad on Saturday to clinch the series 2-1. South Africa won the toss and elected to bat but a collapse from a commanding position saw them post a below-par 143 all out in 37.5 overs. That was never likely to challenge the home side and they reached their target with three wickets down and a huge 149 deliveries remaining. South Africa made a good start to their innings with a 72-run opening stand between left-handers Quinton de Kock (53) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (39), but lost their next nine wickets for the addition of only 71 runs. Pakistan’s spinners squeezed the scoring rate and got the ball to grip off the surface, with Abrar Ahmed picking up career-best figures of 4-27. Salman Agha (2-18) and Mohammad Nawaz (2-31) were also excellent as they ripped through the middle order. Abrar’s first three wickets were all bowled as he bamboozled the South African batters with his variations. "It has been teamwork and we have worked very hard across the formats so credit goes to the players," Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi said. "We didn't get so much help in the first five-six overs but when the spinners came on, they made it tough." Pakistan lost opener Fakhar Zaman for a second successive duck in the opening over but Saim anchored their innings to go with contributions from Babar Azam (27) and Mohammad Rizwan (32 not out). "We did not score enough runs," South Africa stand-in captain Matthew Breetzke said. "We were probably looking at 250. It was tough conditions and unfortunately we lost too many wickets there. Abrar bowled really nicely." Pakistan begin a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, while South Africa stay on the sub-continent with the start of their two-match test series against India on Friday.

China says it's hoping for action from Netherlands to resolve Nexperia crisis

SHANGHAI: The Chinese government said on Saturday (Nov 8) it is waiting for concrete actions by the Netherlands to resolve a dispute over chipmaker Nexperia that has led to shortages of the company's chips and threatened car production. The Chinese Commerce Ministry said it had agreed to a Dutch request to send representatives to Beijing for talks on Nexperia, which is based in the Netherlands but owned by Chinese firm Wingtech. "We are conducting constructive talks (with China) and will take the appropriate constructive steps ourselves when that's needed," a spokesperson for the Netherlands' Economic Affairs Ministry said in response on Saturday. "At this time we cannot discuss the content of the ongoing talks." The Netherlands intervened at Nexperia, a major maker of basic chips used in the electrical systems of cars, on Sep 30, saying it had to do so to prevent the company from moving production from Europe to China. China responded by blocking exports of the company's finished products on Oct 4, leading to shortages. China has begun offering carmakers exemptions to export restrictions on a case-by-case basis, following a deal with the US.

Slow-starting Ireland pull away to crush Japan 41-10

DUBLIN :Ireland started slowly before pulling away to beat Japan 41-10 at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday with a strong second half easing concerns about their recent form ahead of tougher challenges to come against Australia and South Africa. Andy Farrell's men were extremely sloppy in the first half and lucky to be 17-10 up at the interval after a yellow card for Japan let them wrestle control through tries from Jack Crowley and Nick Timoney, before Kenta Kobayashi deservedly responded. Even though the Irish also lost a man to the sin bin for the start of the second half, they were far better with tries from Andrew Porter, replacements Gus McCarthy and Paddy McCarthy and winger Tommy O'Brien overwhelming the tiring Japanese. "We got a reaction at halftime so that was a bit better," Farrell, whose side fell away badly in the final 20 minutes in last weekend's 26-13 defeat by New Zealand. "You can be short of confidence when things aren't flowing your way and I thought we regathered ourselves pretty well in the second half, even though there were still a few errors. To get to 41-10 from where we were at halftime was the pleasing part." Ireland's first 10 points all came from flyhalf Crowley, a penalty, fine team try and conversion - the latter pair shortly after the yellow card for Japan centre Charlie Lawrence blunted the visitors' encouraging start. CAPTAIN DORIS RETURNS While Ireland welcomed back captain Caelan Doris, it was one of the handful of fringe players given a chance - flanker Timoney - who sped home impressively for his fifth try in as many caps since making his debut in 2021. But familiar errors returned. Ireland's lineout, which has now struggled on a consistent basis, was even more of a shambles early on. Doris blamed the initial struggles on players being unable to hear the calls in the stadium. The returning captain, who played all 80 minutes, described his side's performance as mixed and was critical of how much ball they gave away. That looseness helped Japan back in the game before the break but the Brave Blossoms were also impressive in attack in the first half. Kobayashi's try resulted from Eddie Jones' side showing their opponents how to organise a lineout platform. It looked like they had a real opportunity to push on after a yellow card for Jacob Stockdale just before the break but a different Ireland emerged after halftime, with Porter's try putting the hosts' firmly back in control. A strong Irish pack mixed with youth and experience made a big impact. Gus McCarthy, whose lineout throwing was perfect, struck from one of his set-pieces before his namesake, Paddy, marked his second cap with a first international try. Player of the match O'Brien showed off the pace that could make him a real weapon for a side that has long lacked speed, when he added try number six five minutes from time.

Don't change the lineup — Ikpeba advises Eric Chelle ahead of Gabon clash

Super Eagles legend Victor Ikpeba has given Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle some crucial advice ahead of the must-win game against Gabon. Victor Ikpeba has strongly advised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to maintain faith in the team that recently secured a dominant 4-0 victory against the Cheetahs of Benin. That significant win helped the Super Eagles earn a crucial berth in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.Chelle’s side is now set to face the Panthers of Gabon in the high-stakes semi-final of the playoffs in Rabat, Morocco. Ikpeba stressed that continuity is vital for the Super Eagles boss, given the positive momentum established. “You don’t change a winning team,” Ikpeba told SuperSport. He emphasised the gravity of the upcoming fixture, highlighting the national team's need to secure qualification after recent disappointments. “It’s a second chance for us to qualify for the World Cup. We have to get it right this time, especially as we did not qualify for Qatar 2022,” Ikpeba stated. There is tremendous pressure on Chelle ahead of this game, especially with the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the last World Cup. Meanwhile, Chelle has announced his squad for the upcoming clash, with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and more expected to lead the nation's charge.

De Ligt's last-gasp equaliser snatches dramatic draw for Man United at Spurs

LONDON :Matthijs de Ligt's 96th-minute header snatched a point for Manchester United in a see-sawing 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday, after Richarlison thought he had won it for the hosts in stoppage time. United's Bryan Mbuemo scored with the first shot on target in the 32nd minute of what had been a flat contest, nodding in Amad Diallo's clipped ball to the back post for the summer signing's sixth goal of the season. Spurs had their Europa League trophy on display before kickoff, a reminder of their triumph over United in May's final which secured Champions League football and delivered a long-awaited trophy in former boss Ange Postecoglou's last hurrah. But the gesture did not have the desired effect as Richarlison squandered Spurs' best chance of the first period and the hosts looked uninspired before halftime, which was greeted with a smattering of boos. They improved slightly after the break but boss Thomas Frank's decision to replace Xavi Simons with Mathys Tel with 10 minutes to play was also booed by the home support. It was Tel, though, who equalised in the 84th minute before Richarlison gave Spurs the lead seven minutes later by getting a fortunate touch on a Wilson Odobert shot. But de Ligt levelled at the death from Bruno Fernandes's corner to extend United's unbeaten run to five games and leave Spurs with a single home league win from six games this season. Both sides are on 18 points from 11 games, with Spurs third and United seventh on goal difference. Frank emphasised the positives of his side's display after the break, telling reporters: "Second half, our response, I was extremely happy with. The way we turned around to stay in the game... very, very happy with that." Tel was less upbeat. "Second half our reaction was good, we changed the game," he told TNT Sports. "But we're also mad because we had to win today." EUROPA FINAL REMATCH PRODUCES DRAMA Spurs beat United four times in all competitions last season, culminating in the Europa League victory though it was not enough to save Postecoglou's job. His replacement Frank has sought to make Spurs more robust but they have been toothless offensively at times, as was on display in Saturday's first half. Odobert replaced the anonymous Randal Kolo Muani at the break and produced an early chance with a teasing cross that Romero hit straight at Senne Lammens, who then did well to palm away Joao Palhinha's half volley. The game seemed to be drifting away from Spurs when three substitutes combined as Odobert found Destiny Udogie, whose cross was trapped by Tel and smashed off de Ligt's shin and in. Micky van de Ven made a crucial tackle to stop Benjamin Sesko restoring United's lead, an incident that seemed to hurt the striker, before Richarlison seemingly gave Spurs an unlikely winner. De Ligt rose highest at the far post, however, in the last of six minutes of added time as both teams spurned the chance to move into provisional second place. United head coach Ruben Amorim said he was disappointed his side had let their lead slip away, despite their late equaliser. "We have a lot of problems," he told reporters. "We are just in the beginning. I know that sometimes the results show to people that we are improving... but we have a lot to do."

Tottenham vs Manchester United: Red Devils snatch draw from the jaws of victory after dramatic finish

The Red Devils went from being on the brink of a victory to being on the brink of a defeat against Tottenham Manchester United had to rely on a 96th-minute Mathijs de Ligt goal to rescue a point away to Tottenham despite leading the match for more than 50 minutes. The Red Devils took the lead just after the half-hour mark thanks to Bryan Mbeumo, but two late goals from Mathys Tel and Richarlison put them in a losing position before De Ligt's last gasp equaliser. Tottenham vs Man Utd: How it happened Tottenham fell behind after a sluggish start, as Manchester United made their first real chance count through Mbeumo’s superb header from Amad Diallo’s cross. The Cameroonian, October’s Premier League Player of the Month, continued his fine form with his fifth goal in nine games against Spurs. Despite showing more urgency after the break, Tottenham’s attempts to equalise were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who pulled off brilliant saves from Cristian Romero and João Palhinha. Brennan Johnson thought he had levelled, but his composed finish was ruled out for offside. Manchester United threatened again through Bruno Fernandes, but substitute Mathys Tel eventually drew Spurs level with a clever turn and deflected finish after coming off the bench. The hosts then looked destined for victory when Wilson Odobert’s strike was redirected into the bottom corner by Richarlison late on. However, a lapse in concentration proved costly, as United responded immediately in stoppage time. From Fernandes’ corner, de Ligt rose highest at the back post to nod home and earn the Red Devils a dramatic 2-2 draw, extending their unbeaten run to five matches while denying Spurs a much-needed win.

Norris nine points clear after Piastri crashes in Sao Paulo sprint

SAO PAULO :Lando Norris stretched his Formula One championship lead to nine points after winning Saturday's Sao Paulo sprint while McLaren teammate and title rival Oscar Piastri crashed in a big blow to the Australian's bid to get back on top. The pair had started the day, in tricky conditions and a drying track at Interlagos, separated by a single point with Norris on pole position and Piastri third on the grid. The 24-year-old Piastri's hopes disappeared on lap six of 24, another huge moment in a championship of fine margins, when he lost control on the wet kerb at turn three. The McLaren spun into the barriers, closely followed off by Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Alpine's Franco Colapinto. The race was then halted on lap eight after the safety car was deployed, resuming with a rolling start after barrier repairs and Norris leading the field to the flag with Mercedes's Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in his slipstream. BORTOLETO CRASHES ON LAST LAP Antonelli threatened to get past Norris, closing the gap to less than a second on medium tyres to the Briton's softs, but had to settle for second when Sauber's home hero Gabriel Bortoleto crashed heavily at the start of the final lap, triggering double yellow warning flags. The Brazilian, whose car went airborne and careered into the walls on both sides of the track in a scary crash, reported over the radio that he was unhurt. He was taken to the medical centre and released, then he ran down the pitlane to the Sauber garage. Antonelli took the chequered flag 0.845 behind Norris, with Russell third and Mercedes regaining second place overall from Ferrari. "It was tough. It makes the win more rewarding when you have a race like this," said Norris. "Not an easy race but it's always a difficult one in Brazil. Mercedes were quick. I expected us to be a bit better but we weren't. I don't know how much of that is down to tyres or did Mercedes do a good job?" Red Bull's reigning world champion Max Verstappen finished fourth and is now 39 points behind Norris in third place overall and with four grands prix and a sprint remaining. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fifth, after overtaking Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, with teammate Lewis Hamilton seventh and the final point going to Alpine's Pierre Gasly. Qualifying for Sunday's main grand prix was due to follow on Saturday afternoon, with Sauber in a race against time to repair Bortoleto's car. "I will try to put this behind," said Piastri, who lost the overall lead to Norris in Mexico last month. "There's a lot more points on offer tomorrow. So the better job I can do in qualifying to get a good starting point, the better it will be." Team boss Andrea Stella admitted to mixed feelings, saying: "It's just an episode. Oscar has been fast this weekend. We look forward to regrouping, repairing the car. The big points are tomorrow." (Writing by Alan Baldwin in London, editing by Clare Fallon)

‘I will win if votes count’ – Soludo declares, accuses opponents of vote-buying

Soludo voted at exactly 1:25 pm. He arrived the polling unit and was quickly accredited and he went on to cast his vote. Meanwhile, over 400 voters are still waiting to vote at the centre. The delay is as a result of the fact that only one BVAS machine was made available to the centre. Meanwhile, the governor who spoke to journalists, said he was confident of victory. He said he has heard that his opponents were buying votes, adding that he is confident of winning the election if the votes count. He said: “The election has been relatively peaceful and going on very peacefully, except for some places where we have gotten reports of difficulty. “We have witnessed glitches here and there, like some polling units in Olumbanasa where the BVAS were not working very well. We have also received reports about Nnewi South Local Government Area, where someone was sharing N15,000 for votes, maybe because he is desperate to win in that local government. “I heard it and I said, don’t mind. Even if they share N100,000, let the people just vote and let the votes count. We are fairly convinced that on the basis of one man one vote, we are going to win landslide, there is not question about that.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
