John Swinney 'happy to meet' family of Sheku Bayoh who died in police custody

First Minister John Swinney "is happy to meet" the family of Sheku Bayoh who died in police custody. The Sheku Bayoh inquiry launched in November 2020 to examine the father-of-two's death in police custody in May 2015. He passed away after being restrained by officers in Kirkcaldy following calls stating he had been behaving erratically and was carrying a knife. Mr Bayoh was restrained on the ground by six officers following a violent confrontation after it was found he was not carrying a knife. He lost consciousness and later died in hospital. The family has asked for a meeting with the John Swinney and spoke of withdrawing from the public inquiry due to feeling "totally betrayed" by the criminal justice system. The first minister told BBC Scotland News : “I would be perfectly happy to meet with the Sheku Bayoh family. We’ve met before. “I’d be happy to meet again to consider these issues and to assure them of the importance that we attach to making sure that this inquiry is completed and that any of the lessons that need to be learned are learned.” This comes after Lord Bracadale stood down as chairman of the inquiry on Tuesday. The Scottish Police Federation (SPF) repeatedly questioned his impartiality over meetings with Mr Bayoh's family. In his resignation letter, Lord Bracadale wrote: "As the judicial review process developed it became clear that the concerns about my conduct had not been allayed by my decision and that the criticisms have persisted. "As a result, it is now clear to me that many of the core participants have lost confidence in my conduct of the Inquiry to such an extent that it cannot be retrieved." Senior counsel to the Inquiry Angela Graham KC, Laura Thomson KC and Jason Beer KC resigned two days later, as did junior counsel Rachel Barrett and Sarah Loosemore. The first minister thanked Lord Bracadale today for his service and said he understood why he resigned . He said: "Lord Bracadale has given the most extraordinary commitment to the inquiry and in my view has given outstanding service to the people of Scotland in taking forward this very difficult inquiry." Lord Bracadale's replacement will be decided by Scottish government ministers, with the new chairperson then appointing counsel.

AGNES NAMAGANDA: Possible reason behind the increase in monetized prayer by men of God

Awhile back, writers, Gabriel Buule and Gloria Irankunda published an article bashing men of God who are increasingly demanding for money in exchange for prayers. The article ran under the title; “Prayers for sale: How ‘Men of God; are monetizing miracles”. Their argument was based on Mat 10:8 which encourages those who have the gift of performing miracles, to do it free of charge since the gift is freely given by God. While masking their identities, the writers went on to give the views of the men of God who require money in exchange for miracle prayers. On the contrary, the writers mentioned a Pastor Isaac Hakiza, who is presented as a genuine man of God that has been at the fore of condemning the vice. Quite literally, the article seemed like a promotional write-up for Hakiza, whose names, Church, complete with location, are mentioned, while the details of the money-minded servants of God are hidden. If one is going to do an expose’, then expose, so that the public is warned against falling prey! Why cover up their identities? Otherwise, article could be taken to imply that all men of God are money-minded except Hakiza. Secondly, the writers only made a case for people that were frustrated by this prayers-for-sale trade. There was not a single positive testimony about a person who was prayed for, and they received their miracle. This is a gross imbalance in reporting on the subject. There is no smoke without fire. If people are lining up to be prayed for by men of God, take time and inquire about their reasons. The writers however, made no effort in exploring this angle. The article was biased from the word , go. On TV a few months back, as I was scrolling through the channels in the comfort of my living room on a Sunday, I happened to come across the family of Prof. Barnnabbas Nawangwe, a whole Vice Chancellor of the current number one university in East Africa, at the pulpit of Pastor Kayanja, on his Channel 44. The family was giving thanks while holding a bulging envelope, possibly containing a sizable amount of money as an offering. Apparently, if I got it correctly, the family had a problem child, who through the prayers of Pastor Kayanja, had reformed, and was ready to get back on the right course of life. This boy was now ready to continue with his education after the intervention of Pastor Kayanja, and the family was besides itself with joy and appreciation. Any parent understands the helplessness that a child, errant in one way or another, can cause the whole family. We can argue that the child finally gained some sense and decided to step back on the apprehension he was causing his family. However, you cannot convince this family that this child was not helped by Pastor Kayanja’s prayers. With that testimony, aired on TV moreover, many other families will obviously be approaching Pastor Kayanja for similar help. There are so many families that are struggling and watching helplessly as their children get addicted to vices like drugs. Some cannot even afford expensive rehabilitation services while some that can afford, see no results. It is laughable that many people accuse men of God for amassing wealth at the expense of their poor flock. Is Prof. Nawangwe, a poor man? Imagine the kind of offering that this family gave to this Church after the recovery of their child! Do people actually start to think about the kind of spiritual and moral support that these people offer to the nation? The bible in 1 Sam 9 carries the story of Saul and his servant who made sure they had an offering as they went into meet the man of God, Prophet Samuel. These two were sick with worry over donkeys that they had lost. In verse 8, Saul’s servant is quoted as thus; “Look, I have a quarter of shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of Godnso that he will tell us what way to take.” In this day and age, Buule, Irankunda, and others, would possibly claim that Samuel was monetizing his gift of prophecy to enrich himself. Yet, presenting a gift when seeking a solution, is a key in spiritual dealings. In fact, the bible says in Deut 16:17 that, “thou, shall not come before the Lord empty-handed.” Clearly, Saul and his servant knew this. They were going to seek a solution from a man but they carried a gift because this man had a gift of seeing into the future. They knew that by going to Samuel, they were actually appearing before God. This demonstrates a key principle in seeking divine solutions from a man of God. The seeker must be fully convinced that the man of God is genuine. If you are not sure about the authenticity of a man of God, stay away. The spirit realm works on the principle of faith. Unbelief and doubt are the greatest impediment to receiving a miracle. Even Jesus, failed to perform miracles in the face of unbelief, yet He is God. He failed. The testimonies mentioned in the write-up by Buule and Irankunda were marred with unbelief, little wonder that the seekers didn’t receive their miracles. Obviously, fakes are in all fields including the prestigious men of God club. This should be no surprise. It is clearly written in scripture that these will emerge. However, to get a miracle, there has got to be some sacrifice. Imagine a person that has been asked for Shs 450 million for a medical procedure abroad, crying for giving Shs 200,000 as an offering to meet the man of God. Some of these men of God have been forced to become more forthright about demanding for an offering because the seekers are not educated in the matters of the spirit. You find that this man of God has rented premises, pays water bills, and electricity bills, with office assistants or ushers to support in receiving guests daily. Some of these chronically ill patients will head to the wash rooms, finish a whole toilet roll, and flush 20 times, yet they expect this man of God who spends the whole day attending to them, to find ways of paying these bills. This is blatant lack of empathy. The gift of performing miracles is free, but the utility costs are not. The office attendants must have lunch, and the bills at the premises where you meet these men of God, must be paid. Since, these individuals are ignorant about appearing before God with an offering, men of God are forced to include a charge for their services. It is also well-known that these men of God spend appreciable amounts of time in the presence of God so they are able to receive the grace to perform miracles. They also have to patiently sit and listen to all manner of recounts about failed marriages, barrenness, sickness, and errant children. This is the very same way, mainstream health workers spend time in school to hone their skills in medical practice, and listening to patients. Why isn’t it a problem when health workers ask for a consultation fee for their services? The man of God is also skilled in providing divine solutions. The gift demanded of the Lord, was stipulated because God foresaw insensitive individuals, seeking solutions without giving anything to the effect. As long as the office premises need to be paid for, and the man of God has a family to look after, but yet spends the entire day praying for people with challenges, it is only human that an amount is given to support their availability. Many people do not even give tithe but expect the man of God to spend three hours attending to them, only for them to confidently walk away. If healing miracles do happen, then a Church is a hospital of sorts. It is only logical that people for prayers so the man of God can meet his/her personal needs and the needs of the Church. Howe hopes late victory over Fulham can be turning point in Newcastle's season

NEWCASTLE, England :Newcastle United's dramatic late 2-1 Premier League win over Fulham on Saturday may prove more than just three points — it could be the emotional spark their season needs, said United boss Eddie Howe. Bruno Guimaraes' 90th-minute strike rescued the Magpies from what looked like a damaging draw, and Howe believes the timing of the goal could have a ripple effect. "Late goals don't just affect the game you've won, they affect mood and belief going forward," Howe said. "It can have a big knock-on effect. We've had heartbreak the other way. This felt like a massive moment for us. We found a way to win." Newcastle's win was just their third of the season and saw them climb provisionally to 10th in the table. Howe wants more though after last season's fifth-place finish and a League Cup victory. The Magpies were looking to get their league campaign back on track after last weekend's disappointing 2-1 loss at Brighton and Hove Albion, but were buoyed by their emphatic 3-0 Champions League victory over Benfica midweek. Howe had talked of reigniting Newcastle's Premier League push — and his side backed up that ambition with a purposeful start with Jacob Murphy scoring in the 18th minute. Sasa Lukic drew the visitors level in the 56th minute and the game looked to be heading towards a draw before Guimaraes' late-game heroics. Substitute William Osula drove to the edge of the box, but his shot was parried into the path of Guimaraes by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, and the Brazilian poked it in from close range. "It's one I'll remember, that's for sure," Howe said. "You always remember when you win late, and it was a priceless win for us ... a big three points." Howe had praised Guimaraes' durability in logging thousands of miles to play for club and country in his pre-game press conference on Friday, pointing out that his captain "very rarely lets you down." The midfielder proved his point at St James' Park. "I feel unbelievable. We were very tired from Wednesday's game and I think we had to learn how to finish the game," Guimaraes said. "I'm happy in the end we scored a goal. The last few games we have been punished at the end - by Arsenal, Liverpool. "Will Osula, he came, he shot and I was ready for the rebound in my 150th start for this club. Now I just want to rest for a bit because I am very tired. "We cannot play the perfect game every time but we need to find the three points and we did this today. Very pleased for everyone. This is the Newcastle I know, we fight until the end."

U nedjelju prvi ovosezonski fudbalski derbi Bara: Balkan protiv Sloge

-„Vasko veli Dinu: „Ovo igraju kaubojci i indijanci“, a Dino u sekundi odgovara … -„Bogami Vasko mi nijesmo indijanci“ … Sjutrašnju utakmicu sudiće Dalibor Milatović iz Budve, dok će mu pomagati Barani Petar Lalić i Srđan Tvrdišić. 1. England women lose to Brazil in first match since Euro triumph

MANCHESTER, England :England's women lost 2-1 to Brazil in their first match since their European Championship victory in a friendly on Saturday, with Bia Zanaratto and Dudinha scoring for the South American team who were reduced to 10 players in the first half. Brazil, who successfully defended their Women's Copa America crown in August, were impressive from the opening whistle and Zanaratto scored in the ninth minute when she flicked the ball past Jess Carter before tucking the ball into the bottom corner. Dudinha capitalised on an England defensive blunder in the 18th minute when Ella Toone's turnover allowed the visitors to attack three-on-two, and Dudinha slotted the ball in off the near post at Etihad Stadium. Brazil were down to 10 players in the 21st minute when Toone was one-on-one with Brazil's keeper and Angelina clipped her from behind. England grew into the game and Georgia Stanway pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, awarded after a tackle on Beth Mead, and slotted a firm shot into the corner. "What was missing, I think, is the final part," said England manager Sarina Wiegman. "Of course, they were tough in defending. They have some very physical players. We were sometimes a bit unlucky, but also sometimes in decision-making, we could do better. "I think the learning we take from this is get the final third, how can we create even more and get the final details right in execution and decision making." England host Australia in Derby in the second game of their "Homecoming Series" on Tuesday.

Trump slams Canadian anti-tariff ad that invoked Ronald Reagan as ‘possibly AI’

President Donald Trump criticized a controversial Canadian anti-tariff advertisement late Friday, calling it “crooked” and “dishonest” and suggesting that its excerpts from former President Ronald Reagan’s speech may have been generated using artificial intelligence. The advertisement, sponsored by Ontario’s provincial government, uses real but spliced moments from an April 1987 Reagan address about imposing tariffs on Japan to criticize U.S. tariffs. In response, Trump announced Thursday that he was ending all trade negotiations with Canada. “Canada lied,” Trump told reporters Friday as he prepared to depart for an Asia trip. “They made up a fake statement by President Reagan. Reagan was a big supporter of tariffs when needed. We need tariffs for national security, and they totally turned it around because they’re getting hurt by tariffs, and we’re gaining by tariffs.” Trump continued, “Reagan liked tariffs and when necessary, he would use tariffs, It’s made us a very rich country. It’s also made us, when it was used against us, not good for us. But we’ve used them very successfully.” The Reagan Presidential Foundation also condemned the ad, calling it unauthorized and a misrepresentation of Reagan's views. The foundation indicated it is pursuing legal options over the use of the audio. Trump echoed these concerns, accusing Canada of trying to influence an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision on his sweeping tariff agenda. Earlier this year, Trump raised the import tax on Canada to 35 percent. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Friday that he would pull the ad to allow trade talks to resume, following discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. However, Ford said the ad would continue running through the weekend, including during the first World Series games between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers, which Trump called “fraud” and “dirty playing.” “I can play dirtier than they can,” Trump told reporters Friday. Ford said the campaign’s goal was to spark dialogue about the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses. “We’ve achieved our goal, having reached U.S. audiences at the highest levels,” Ford said in a statement Friday. “Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses.”

The world dropped the ball on critical minerals and China pounced. Is it too late for Australia and the US to close the gap?
Technology

The world dropped the ball on critical minerals and China pounced. Is it too late for Australia and the US to close the gap?

Almost eight years to the day after the last Holden rolled off an Adelaide factory assembly line, Anthony Albanese announced a $13bn deal with Donald Trump to help champion a domestic rare-earth industry. Announcing the deal this week in Washington, the prime minister called it “a really significant day” that would take the relationship between the two countries “to the next level”. “We’re just getting started,” Albanese said. The US president claimed “in about a year from now, we’ll have so much critical mineral and rare earths, that you won’t know what to do with them”. Most Australians, it’s fair to say, would already struggle to know what to do with a kilo of gallium, for example, let alone a bucket of neodymium-praseodymium oxide. But both are among a wide range of elements and related products that are essential to advanced manufacturing, consumer electronics, modern militaries and the clean energy transition. Rare earths are present in electric vehicles and modern batteries, solar panels and wind turbines, electronic devices like iPhones, and in defence hardware – from missile guidance systems to submarines. Turns out, we are all carrying around rare earths in our pockets. Industry policy is back in vogue The timing of this week’s critical minerals deal with the anniversary of the last Aussie-made Holden is particularly poignant because it shows how much the world has shifted. Where once free trade ruled and cost-competitiveness trumped all other considerations – often to the detriment of workers and the environment – we are now in a more fragmented world where countries and companies increasingly value security and reliability of supply. Australia is already an established miner of key critical minerals, including lithium, manganese, nickel-cobalt, rare earths and titanium. Analysis by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources suggests we have “considerable potential in established critical mineral markets like lithium, manganese, and heavy mineral sands, as well as emerging minerals such as rare earths and high purity silica”. Our critical minerals exports could rise to more than $19bn by the end of the decade, in today’s dollars, versus a predicted $80bn for iron ore, according to DISR’s office of the chief economist. But the department believes this potential has been stymied as producers here and overseas struggle to attract investment and maintain profits in markets dominated by a single player (that is, China) that has used its muscle to crash prices and send competitors out of business. It’s geopolitics, stupid Breaking China’s near monopoly in global critical minerals markets and becoming a more valuable partner to the US are the driving forces behind this week’s deal between Albanese and Trump. As Kevin Rudd, ambassador to the US, recently told a conference in Washington DC, Australia’s efforts in this space are about “providing long-term security of supply to the free world”. But, Rudd said, that had to be matched by buyers prepared to look past “the lowest price on available markets” in return for a secure and reliable supply of critical minerals. And it will take a lot of patience, commitment, time and money if Australia and other countries are to meaningfully close the gap with China, which now has a multidecade head start across a range of rare-earth elements and associated products. China’s chokehold on world supply is shown in the stats: the communist country accounts for roughly 70% of rare-earth mining globally, and 90% of rare-earth processing. That was an acceptable situation for western countries for a long time, as they were happy to buy cheap products they weren’t prepared to mine and make themselves. But a more assertive China more recently has shown itself willing to use this dominance as a trade weapon, alarming politicians in Washington, particularly in the wake of Trump’s sweeping “liberation day” tariffs. The suspension of Chinese rare-earth exports in June forced carmaker Ford to pause its production line in Chicago. More recently, China has restricted the export of rare-earth magnets, which are used heavily by the US defence industry. Luke Yeaman, the CBA chief economist, says the geopolitical reality now demands “very heavy-handed and large scale intervention from the US, Australia and a range of other countries to break the dominance of China” in critical minerals. In the wake of Covid, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s more assertive approach in global markets, Yeaman says “countries have realised that they can’t afford to maintain such concentrated supply chains in any country, but especially not in China”. That means there is “a strong economic imperative” to back a domestic rare-earth industry. “The market is clearly too concentrated, without sufficient competition and without sufficient diversification.” Paper profits today While Australia may have to wait a decade or more before seeing the fruits of today’s investments in rare earths, shareholders in miners are enjoying a massive jump in paper profits. ASX-listed rare-earth mining shares have tripled in price this year alone as government announcements have sent stock values soaring. One of the first projects to receive a major investment as part of this week’s deal is to develop Alcoa’s project in Western Australia, which in 2026 will produce gallium, where China accounts for 98% of global supply. The Australian government also announced a $100m equity stake in Arafura’s Nolans neodymium-praseodymium oxide project, which is 135km north of Alice Springs and already has $1.2bn in taxpayer-funded support. Arafura in 2032 hopes to supply 4% of the world’s NdPr oxide needs, which is used in the production of advanced magnets. For context, China produces 93% of these rare-earth magnets. The world begins to catch up with China As is often pointed out, rare earths are not actually rare, geologically speaking. But no country has invested as heavily in exploiting these resources as China. China’s rare-earth industry dominates global supply and is the envy of the western world – at least in its productive capacity, if not its environmental record, says Susan Park, a professor of global governance at the University of Sydney. Park notes that the US had invested in rare earths in the 1950s and 60s, but there was little money in it, so the industry was left to languish. China from the early 90s began investing heavily in rare earths, in a strategy that extended beyond extraction and into refining, which at the time suited western countries. “Because of the significant environmental impacts, a lot of other countries were willing to let China do that,” Park says. “So China, in many cases, said, we’re doing the right thing, we’re helping decarbonisation and we’re bearing the environmental costs of doing so. And then they get this backlash.” As Australia chases the dream of becoming a “global rare-earths superpower”, it will also need to grapple with the fact that many of these processes are heavily polluting, and in some cases, radioactive. A critical minerals industry for Australians Robert Walker, a research fellow at the Lowy Institute, says it will probably not be until the 2030s that a fully functioning and transparent market for critical minerals emerges. During that time, governments will need to act as guaranteed buyers and likely offer a minimum price to make the projects sustainable. “The long-term projections are for demand to really keep increasing at speed, and therefore a lot of these projects need the kind of industrial subsidies and state support in the next few years to remain viable.” This year’s spike in stock prices has raised concerns that taxpayer money will be funnelled into lining shareholder pockets, and that whatever deals are entered into must deliver a return to Australia. The fact that 80% of Australia’s mining industry is foreign-owned further raises the stakes for policymakers when fashioning multibillion-dollar support packages. Park, like Walker, backs a more ambitious approach than just creating another “dig and ship” industry. “We need a full industrial strategy that really looks at the whole supply chain, not just the minerals, but refining and processing, through to a product,” she says. “We totally missed the boat on solar panels. We designed solar panels here in Australia, and they couldn’t get investment, so they went to China, and China now dominates the solar panel industry.”
