Job Opportunity: Managing Director, State of Illinois European Office (Brussels)Location: Brussels, BelgiumPosition Type: Fixed-Term/ContractualSector: International Trade and InvestmentPosition Overview:The State of Illinois is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated professional to lead its European Office based in Brussels. This strategic role is central to advancing Illinois' global economic footprint by promoting exports and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) from Europe into the state.As Managing Director, you will serve as Illinois' primary liaison to European businesses, trade organizations and government entities. You will work closely with Illinois companies to expand their international reach and help European firms explore investment opportunities in the state.Key Responsibilities:Represent the State of Illinois in Europe, primarily in the EU and the United Kingdom, with a focus on trade and investment.Develop and execute strategies to promote Illinois exports and attract FDI.Provide market intelligence, matchmaking, and support services to Illinois companies entering the European market.Identify and engage potential European investors interested in establishing or expanding operations in Illinois.Organize trade missions, investment seminars and networking events.Collaborate with U.S. and European government agencies, chambers of commerce and industry associations.Prepare regular reports and updates for the Illinois Office of Trade and Investment based in Chicago.Ideal Candidate:Proven experience in international trade, foreign direct investment, economic development, or a closely related field.Strong network across European business and government sectors.Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-building skillsAbility to work independently and manage multiple priorities whilst meeting the reporting requirements of the HQ in ChicagoLegal right to work and operate as a self-employed contractor/consultant in Belgium.Minimum Requirements:Education: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in marketing, international marketing, business and economics.Experience: Experience in project management, international business and marketing, public or business administration.Must be fluent (reading, writing and speaking) in English.Preferred Qualifications:Two years’ experience working in international trade, foreign direct investment, economic development or a closely related field.Two years’ experience working directly with European business and government sectors.Two years’ experience negotiating trade and investment agreements.Conditions of EmploymentMust have a valid passport and the ability to travel regionally and internationally.Must have the ability to work overtime.Must have the ability to work outside standard business hours for meetings with international team members and stakeholders.About the AgencyThe mission of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) is to create equitable economic opportunities across the State of Illinois.
