Job Description
The Intermediate and Senior-level Estimators work with other team members to obtain new construction contracts and prepare accurate and timely full-cost estimates for projects including labour, equipment, and material. These positions report to the Estimating Manager. The Senior Estimator works with minimal oversight from the Estimating Manager and provides guidance to the Junior and Intermediate Estimators.QualificationsAble to read and interpret building specifications, blueprints, and as-builtsMathematical and analytical skills necessary to perform estimates on labour, equipment, and materialThorough understanding of subcontractors’ scope of work and what each subtrade should include in their bidFull understanding of the items JEN COL needs to quantify for each type of project delivery methodUnderstanding of earthwork/civil takeoff and programs such as InSite SiteworkExcellent time management with the ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects and requirements in order to meet deadlinesFamiliar with value engineering practices and able to incorporate them into reporting and presentation of budgets to clientsDetail oriented, accurate, and preciseActive listener with effective verbal and written communication skillsAble to work and collaborate in a team environmentFor the Senior Estimator, able to coordinate and manage an estimating team on large, complex projects, add value engineering, set bid strategy, and present to clientsAble to maintain composure in a deadline-driven environmentProficient with Microsoft Office and estimating software such as On-Screen Takeoff and Sage EstimatingEducation & Experience3 – 10 years of experience in the commercial/institutional construction industry in an estimating capacity. For the Senior Estimator, a proven track record of estimating large, complex commercial and institutional construction projectsDegree, diploma, or certificate in construction, engineering, business, or a related fieldExperience working with clients and consultants in various project delivery methodsExperience guiding and mentoring junior team membersFunctional ResponsibilitiesObtain and analyze tender project drawings and specificationsSet up and input estimate in takeoff software and verify scale of drawingsSend out tender invites, communicate with subtrades, review and analyze subcontractor and vendor quotationsPrequalify subcontractors/vendors and track prequalification documents and requirementsComplete quantity takeoffs with On-Screen Takeoff and InSite Sitework software; assess output dataInput takeoff data into TimberlineEnter subtrade scope details into designated spreadsheetsDevelop and input Project General Requirements with input from operations and leadership teamPerform Risk analyses and suggest contingencies to carry in estimatesDevelop hard tender and construction management estimates/budgets for review by Estimating ManagerPerform start-up process, including completion of potential projects start-up checklist and bonding and insurance requestsSet up preliminary cost codingAssist with maintenance of supplier, subcontractor, and contractor databaseAct as lead estimator for design/build tenders and assist in preparation of CM/DB proposalsCoordinate tender closing for your own and other projectsAttend project start-up and close-out meetings and estimating department meetingsFacilitate the transition of projects from Estimating to Project ManagementPrepare and assemble project reports for clients, Project Managers and SuperintendentsAssist Project Managers with selection and buy-out of vendors and subcontractorsAssist Business Development department with order of magnitude budgetsPresent budgets to clients as part of the Project teamAssist with project schedule developmentPractice value engineering and bring projects in on budgetLead design-build pursuits, including consultant meetings and requirement deadlinesLiaise, consult, and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, and subcontractors to prepare design development budgets and make adjustments to cost estimatesMaintain files of working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including accurate up-to-date information on prices from suppliers. Analyze prior cost and production historyVisit jobsites for pre-bid meetings to identify issues and concerns and to better understand field means and methodsNetwork with subtrades to develop and maintain relationships, ensuring best value is providedAdditional Responsibilities for the Senior EstimatorProduce all classifications of estimates with minimal review by Estimating ManagerAct as lead estimator for all types of estimates as required and mentor junior team members through the processLead tender closing for your own and other projects as requiredDevelop and communicate bid strategy, including scheduleWorking ConditionsOffice atmosphere; manual dexterity required to operate computer and peripheralsDriving of a company vehicleVisits to construction sites (hazards associated with the construction industry)
